And it's something of a higgledy-piggledy affair. Nothing matching here. Cork tiles covering some walls, barely any plaster covering others. But the whole effect is rather charming. A Mal Maison this is not. Nothing ubiquitous here. Or new. Or functioning quite how it should. The public areas are adorned with art work and brick-a-brack (that's the second time I've used that phrase in two reviews, must be something to do with Pembrokeshire) and there's a chaotic feel about the place. We had lunch in the dining room which had a slightly haunted feel, but I mean that in a nice way. Food was best described as home cooked and hearty. Warming and filling, nothing of finesse but all good stuff. Then we went for a walk in the garden. That's when you get the real charm of this place. It sprawls for ages and there are little nooks and crannies everywhere. A pond section with frogs and toads a-plenty (I think the owners have been busy licking those toads over the years) and beautifully tended beds full of overgrowing loveliness. Real romantic stuff. Walk down the garden and you get to a little bar which is situated below the dining room. It's a proper cubby hole. stone walls, low ceiling, plenty of people enjoying the view over the bay and drinking good local ale. You could hunker down there for a long afternoon turning into a long night for sure. And then of course there's the beach at the bottom of the cliff. We walked down at low tide and the whole thing was nothing short of stunning. Fine sand, imposing cliffs and rocks, pools for the kids to explore, horses to ride and not another person within 200 yards of you. Simply stunning. As an aside, the path that leads down to the beach has the wonderful sight of a Tellytubby house built into the cliff there. Turns out it's an actual house, rather in the Grand Designs mould, designed by the same company that designed the Media Centre at Lords. You can see the similarities. Really quite amazing. Back to the hotel for a mooch and a chat to reception who were ever so friendly and told me the place was booked throughout the year with people who come to gaze at the stars in the summer or brave the wind and cold in the winter. Rooms are all completely individual, some don't have bathrooms, some only a log fire for warmth. You get the drift. If you're after spas and mod cons, this place isnt for you. But if you're after long walks and a bit of a weird and wonderful time in a place full of character situated above one of the finest beaches I've ever seen, you've hit the jackpot.

Its is a converted fam with stunningly converted stables and milking parlours for the retaurant. The building is over 150 years old. It realy is stunning inside. The fool dis brilliant, and a real treat for this area, a lot of time and effort has be made and taken to make this something special.. definalty not the usual standard of a place like this. It may seem pricy but that is compared to other places in this area. Its very stylish and wouldnt be out of place on the swankiest of streets in london. They even offer a helicoper landing pad now! check out the website for pictures, the interior is sstunning. They cater for parties, events, holiday breaks, or just the restaurant. Its a lovely find, and totaly out of the norm for this area! After the rain and the clouds had drifted away, Mr. Wales decided we should go on another one of our scenic, relaxing drives. I had no clue, as usual, where we were going, but he knew... We ended up here at Worm's Head and it was absolutely stunning! The view was breathtaking and no, that's not because it was really windy outside. We went into the bar to get some lunch and have a drink. There was an awful lot to choose from on the menu and lots of seafood. And considering where we were, it would've been stupid not to have something from the sea. I opted for the fettucine with smoked salmon in a cream sauce, while Mr. Wales had the cod with rarebit and mashed potatoes. Our drinks (non-alcoholic) and food came to just under £20.00. Despite the wind, I opted to sit outside overlooking the beautiful beach. Tip: if you are sitting outside, you'll need to find the number on the table and have that for when you order at the bar. The service was very quick, in fact, after taking just a couple of pictures, the food appeared! The staff seemed to be rushing around, but just delivering dishes and taking away dishes... not much else, so it could be tricky trying to wave them down. The food was good, but there was too much of mine... I mean two of us could have fed on it alone, two of us did... after he finished his food. Funny enough, Mr. Wales' dish was much smaller, but looked lovely. The fish was good, I'm not sure how I feel about cheese and fish, but he seemed to enjoy it. I have to say, even if the food wasn't that great, I'd probably just give the place a rating for the view! Even if you sat inside, they have huge windows so you can enjoy the view from inside if you aren't brave enough to sit in the wind. If anything, have a drink here and enjoy the view!

The staff were friendly and helpful and quick to point out what was unavailable. They have the usual liquid refreshments on offer but my advice is to try the Worms Head local brew. Whilst I am not a bitter/ale fan I have to say it was lovely and smooth and very more ish!!! I opted for the steak and Worm Head Ale pie which was well presented and tasted as good as it looks, it issue ideal meal to warm you back up if you have been out surfing or just walking in the glorious countryside which surrounds the pub. I was in the pub early evening and it was very busy but you could still have a conversation without shouting, which is always a good thing. If you are someone who likes being connected to then Internet then this is not the place for you to visit the signal is intermittent at best. But the views that you get from the pubs outside eating area is fabulous. Although I was there on a day when it was overcast I stil had a spectacular view. The worms head point is a short walk from the pub and if you get the timings right you can walk across to the actual point. The only downside is they really could use a new hand dryer in the men's toilet or just some paper towels. Apart from that its a great place with good food and a good variety of liquid refreshments on offer. When I am next in Wales I will be making an effort to get back here.

Let me tell you a little about the location of this pub hotel. Situated in the provincial Welsh town of Carmarthen, a place seemingly stuck in a pre-millennium timewarp filled with some pleasant locals but primarily a demographic of OAPs, lager louts and bored looking teenagers, in which the only source of entertainment is to marinate oneself in as much alcohol as your enzymes can handle. The location aside the Rose and Crown is fairly innocuous in terms of looks, although I did sense a ripple of tension from the locals as we walked into the pub (The League of Gentlemen kept popping into my head for some inexplicable reason!) I had come down to Carmarthen to surprise my fiancé as he was working down there for a few days, and staying at the hotel. Despite his already having paid for the room I still had to pay £20 for the privilege of sleeping in the other unoccupied single bed in my partner's room. Apparently the manageress was doing us a favour by allowing this, and told us that they'd had problems with guests bringing...ahem...."visitors" back to stay before. Despite feeling slightly disgruntled by being categorised with certain ladies of the night I paid up as quite frankly I couldn't be bothered driving the hour and a half home. There were 8 rooms in all, each fairly basic in design but clean and serviceable. The bathrooms were a happy surprise - each with a large, new shower cubicle, which were very well maintained. The beds were, like most cheap hotels, not exactly the height of comfort but quite frankly we were so exhausted we would've slept on anything. Unfortunately however sleep alluded me all night, with a cacophony of noise spewing from the pub and the locals trundling up and down the street until 5.30am. I was so tired by the time my alarm went off I decided to skip breakfast to catch a few extra precious minutes sleep. If you're a night owl yourself The Rose and Crown would probably suit you down to the ground, but as a resting place for tired business persons, or as a romantic getaway (though I can't imagine anyone choosing Carmarthen for a romantic weekend away) I would recommend you stay elsewhere!

There is a fabulous huge Ginko Biloba tree growing on their terrace. These were the best bits! The food was less than moderate in taste, flavour and presentation. We had tomato soup and followed this by scampi and chips which was - hang on while I think of the best word to describe in all my fantastic repertoire - Yuck! As we were setting off on the road again we decided to use the 'facilities' both ladies and gentlemen's in this case and they were - here we go again - Yuck! Advised reception about the state of the toilets and they said something along the lines of 'Oh yeah, thank you'. So if you go there there admire the view and grab a few leaves off the tree to make your tea. Remember not to use the toilet and look for a better place to eat....any place?

There is a good sized bar and restaurant, both with nice views. The food in the restaurant was quite good. I had slow-roasted pork cooked in hay which was served with potatoes and cabbage: the meat was a little fatty, but tasty and a little different. Starters cost around £5-8, mains £13-17, sweets around £5. The rooms are clean, reasonably modern and well equipped with free Wi-Fi available in the bar and rooms. The service was OK, the car park is a reasonable with a large overflow car park.
