It would get 4 Stars from me on the food alone, but it is the location and experience that push it over the top. First, it is located in one of our (my wife and I) favorite places in all of Ireland, the Dunfanaghy area in northwestern Donegal. The area is gorgeous (matched only by the Dingle peninsula). Then, the restaurant is located right next to a large pond filled with birds of various descriptions, and there are great views from the dining room. When you first arrive, you are seated next to a peat fire and have your drink order taken. It is a great way to get prepared for the meal. When you are taken into the dining room, you've waited just the right amount of time, not too long, not too short. The food itself is great. The best mussels I've ever had were at The Mill. You'll have a wonderful multi-course, fixed price meal with great views and good, yet fairly unobtrusive service. I won't try to peg the style, but I'd say generally modern, continental. After dessert, you will then go into a conservatory with tea and coffee, where you can wind down (and if need be, sober up), before heading out. Only thing to really be aware is that The Mill is closed during the winter. Also, I'd highly recommend reservations. Don't take a chance that you'll show up and not get a table. You'll regret it.

To my Dublin-familiar mind, this makes the pints a bit bitter and takes away some of the depth of flavour. In any case, this is how they were served here. However: They were really good. Sticking to the glass, with loads of time taken, and hitting the spot after a long Dhún na nGall day in the sun. On the food: A simple menu printed on A4 with pretty basic stuff. But then yer man comes out and tells us that there's fish on: Trout and Hake. This was quite possibly the freshest fish we had. Slow service -- they had to get out there and find the fish, I suppose -- but it was bloody delicious, served with lovely spuds and cabbage and bacon. Been through a few changes in management over the years, but all local folk doing good work. This is a standout pub in a sand-out area.

Tracys Bar was that first pub that we frequented on the corner of Waterloo Place and Waterloo Street -- located at the bottom of a steep hill that begins the latter. The stay was certainly a good one as we went into the traditional pub and enjoyed some drinks. While we only stayed for one drink, we enjoyed ourselves in one of the booths by the front door with the bar right across from us. Sipping on a pour of The Quiet Man Irish Whiskey, I felt very at ease and relaxed and could have probably stayed for a little longer, but there were other pubs we wanted to check out. We will definitely return when we are back in Derry.
