When traveling, it's VERY rare for us to do any group tours or the like, preferring to do our own research and sightseeing on our own. However, when we visited Porto for a few days (and without a car), a priority was to see the Douro Valley and do some wine-tasting, so my better-half purchased us tickets for a day-tour of the region with wine-tasting accompaniments: He chose Living Tours as our guide. We knew right from the git-go of the extra-early bus tour assembly (no more than 20 of us), that our hostess-with-the-mostest, Tanya, was going to be a fabulous guide. (And she didn't disappoint!!) :D Our (at times, Disney E-ticket) bus driver, Marlon, maneuvered that huge bus through the tight city and scarily narrow rural roads with much ease and aplomb, to say the least! (We were seated right up-front, behind Marlon, so our view was awesome!) The tour's first stop was the village of Amarante, which was exquisitely draped by fog and made for evocative and picturesque sightseeing. (We spent about an hour there, and there's a load of beautiful pictures I won't be able to share, unfortunately; but, trust me, go if you can!) After our unguided sightseeing of Amarante, we headed off to the village of Pinhão for some port wine educating at Croft's Quinta da Roêda. This is a tourist tour; however, it was more than just perfunctory, and our winery guide was very enthusiastic to teach us Croft's process of port winemaking. We ended the guide with a variety of three glasses of their vintages. Everyone left happy campers!! :D After that portion of the tour, we all drove to our next stop and hopped onto a private boat for a 50-minute boat ride up the Douro River. It was a marvelous little boat trip. Our final destination of the tour was a 2pm tented luncheon at beautiful Casa dos Barros in Sabrosa (along with a couple of other tour groups), where everyone was served a wonderful lunch (along with much wine!). (Being plant-based, they were aware of our diets and served us accordingly. Very satisfying.) The final part of our lunch was another port wine tasting session (for our group), where the wine flowed...! Practically everyone fell asleep on our long drive back to Porto, including myself.... :D A late-arrival into Porto from the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the river granted us a spectacular sunset and exquisite views of Porto!
That's the sad part of a tour when you've had such a great time with folks whom you know you'll most-likely never seen again.... :( That said, we look at the positive that we got to meet terrific people!! Again, Tanya (our guide) and Marlon (our driver) couldn't have been any better--and we wish for them the very best!!! Bottom line is that our Living Tours' tour was worth every-penny and more...!!! Viva!!! :D read more
