Heading into one of the tasting rooms

We just completed 3 tours with this company, all three were excellent. Two of the tours were of the historic kind, one offered in the morning and covers from Pre-history to the the 19th century. The afternoon tour (called the lifestyle tour) covers from 19th to modern times. I knew nothing about Portugal and learned much. Our tour guide was Pedro for those tours and we and most others found him funny, informative and passionate about Porto. These tours are "free", but you should tip your tour guide for the 3 ish hours they just spent entertaining and educating you. We also attended the port wine tasting tour which did cost money, though to us it seemed reasonable, 3 wineries, 7 tastings (though one place allowed my wife and I to taste some of their more premium wines after the main tour was over, we did purchase some bottles). Alex was knowledgeable of wines having worked in the wine business for some time, and was also very humorous. Drinking wine with a group can quickly allow conversations which in turn allow connections to be made. All our tours were in English. These two Portuguese guides spoke English very well.

Review Highlights - Porto Walkers

“The afternoon tour is sightly more off the beaten path as you'd go to places which you would never come to as a tourist on your own.”

We booked our cooking class with Catia the day before. When I had booked it, I had forgotten that…read morewe were supposed to fly out of Porto in the afternoon. Catia went above and beyond to accommodate our schedule. We met earlier and we were able to cook all the dishes before we were scheduled to leave. We first met Catia at the market. She introduced us to the different vendors, explained what ingredients we would be using, and gave us a background of the food in the region. It was quite an informative session. We then went to her workshop where we cooked several delicious dishes. The egg tarts, croquettes, cod soup (not sure if this is what it's called), and chorizo were all amazing. I would definitely recommend this experience to everyone who visits Porto.

We met up with our tour guide Nuno at Mercado do Bolhao where we purchased a few ingredients. He was very friendly and knowledgable about the market's history. He made us feel welcomed and we also learned so much from him, like the origins of tea and tempura (I always thought this originated in Japan). After the market we took a short train ride to Vila Nova de Gaia where the cooking class was located. We were greeted by our other host Joseph who also welcomed us , was friendly, and knowledgable. We learned how to make three authentic dishes and both our hosts really explained the process well and answered all our questions. The food, wine, and appetizers were delicious. The best part was that our hosts Nuno and Joseph made us feel at home and welcomed. This was such a wonderful and memorable experience. I highly recommend doing this tour because this is a great way to learn about some of the history or Porto and experience the warm hospitality of this beautiful city.

Going on this tour was definitely one of the absolute best moves we made on our 10 day trip to…read morePortugal. We had two tour guides; Joao and Renado and they were both absolutely FABULOUS. They were very knowledgeable & explained everything in great detail. They're very friendly, funny, and personable, and made what I thought could have turned out to be a boring tour into a very exciting 3-4 hours. I was also surprised to learn that they both spoke Portuguese, English, and Spanish. The ports we got to try were delicious and we scored an awesome vintage 1966 port at Croft for a little over 150 euros per bottle. The tour also comes with some sampling's of cheeses, breads, olives, and mints. By the end of the tour I didn't even have a need to eat dinner, lol. I highly recommend giving this tour a try and hopefully you get lucky with tour guides as awesome as the ones we had. Be sure to ask your guides for other events because the port walking tour is one of many other tours they host. Thank you, CityLovers Tours!

No one knows which attendees are supposed to be with which guides because that was not predetermined. So it's already a mess. And the groups are big--12 people max. That's really too big. The guides are super confused about how to handle everything and what to do. Probably because they are all of 22-years-old. I get told I'm going with one leader, then another, then back to the first. Well, the first leader is leading a group of 11 20-year-old Americans. No one wants to be a part of that. I left in tears and will do whatever I can to get my money back. City Lovers is an awful, disorganized tour company and I will never book with them or Viator again.
