Vitabergsparken. Also known as Vita Bergen, Vitan - and the best park in Stockholm…read more That's my humble opinion, and I've been to quite a few! Yes, Hagaparken is fantastic and massive, and definitely takes second place. But there's something so personal, so special, about Vita Bergen. While Hagaparken feels modern, there's something classic and romantic about Vitabergsparken. Perhaps it's the name, White Mountains. Perhaps it's the decadent and impressive Sofia Church, more than 100 years old, which towers upon the hill. Perhaps it's the history - this part of Södermalm has had its name since the early 1800s. It was once one of the poorest parts of Stockholm, and Swedish playwright August Strindberg featured the area in his novel The Red Room. Today it's one of the most hip and vibrant parts of the island, located right by Nytorget, aka the cafe and cultural centrum of Stockholm's artsy elite. The park is massive, and has an outdoor amphitheatre, a gazebo, a playground, and plenty of trees and alcoves with BBQ grills and picnic tables. There are always friends and couples and families relaxing here, and the park echoes with laughter - but there's always room to put down a blanket and have your own little square of peace and quiet. But it also has its modern and even futuristic aspects. Here's a little trivia: Deep in the mountains, the Pionen center is nestled. Pionen used to be a civil defence center and Cold War bunker, but in 2008 it was converted into a data center. I haven't been in there, and I'm not sure you can get in at all if you don't work there, but there are some pretty awesome pictures online - it's a deep-space modern data center featuring fountains, a fish tank, greenhouses, and more, below 30 metres of granite. Anyway, let's go back above ground. Vitaberg is my go-to spot for picnics, fika, playing games like Swedish 'kubb', and also big events like birthday celebrations and of course Midsummer. The park is also famous for its amphitheatre which is used frequently for the Summer Theatre series, with plays, ballet, and poetry onstage multiple nights a week. It's green, lush, clean, and quiet. The winding, meandering paths zigzag across the hill, and it's easy to take the path less travelled here. It's easy to get lost, but it's easy to get found. A dozen hidden staircases take you down from the hills onto the street, and quaint red-painted cottages dot the edges. It's a perfect place for sunrise, and unbeatable for sunsets. It's no wonder that Vitaberg has been featured in multiple modern Swedish pop songs. There's a popular song by Rebecca & Fiona called 'The Bells of Vitaberg': "When the bells of Vitaberg ring, you know that the night is ours. Time is running when Vitaberg's bells ring; you know the night is ours, and my heart is pounding."

That's extremely cheap in comparison to SATS for example which will run you 700SEK/month for a similar deal. And it's worth noting that already at this base level 24/7 beats SATS on the important variable of opening hours. It's been a couple of years since I was a member, has since gotten an ok deal with my job for SATS that's also nearby my office. But I'll write from memory. The venue is small & not great. Very very crowded during peak hours to the point where I wouldn't go. Visiting during non peak hours is an ok story - there's a squat rack, a couple of barbells, dumbells etc. An ok warm up/stretch room and a lot of machines + some cardio things like bikes and rowing machines. Locker room (for men) is shitty. Kind of dirty at times and just not a place I'd like to change in. Ususally one of the showers would not work properly. Worth mentioning there's a "tjejgym" (girl gym) which I've never been to but should be worth checking out if you qualify by being a woman. I think that's a good initiative as I'm sure it can be intimidating to be a girl among a dozen dudes trying to get a barbell during peak times. In sum - not a great gym at all but it really does its job and for 200SEK/month it's kind of a steal. Can't really give it more than a 3/5 though.

WARNING: Not what it used to be. :(…read more They say don't be afraid of change. Change is good. But change can also be bad. And I'm afraid my beloved Owl is not the same. I used to adore Ugglan (The Owl). But I hadn't been for a year, and when I went back this time I was shocked to see how it has altered. For one thing, even though we went at 6pm, we were charged 50kr to get in. I've heard that it's normal to pay after 6 or 7 there, but I've never had to pay that early before. The guard - who was smoking the entire time - was also rather rude to us, and searched our bags and confiscated my friend's Loka water bottle 'because alcohol isn't allowed'. But whatever, we paid and surrendered our water bottles and embarked down the seedy, metal, industrial-looking stairway. That's one thing I liked and still do like about this place: the weird industrial look. You feel like you're going down into some secret lab, except it looks more like a dirty alley. And yet somehow it's awesome! Although, the metal grate stairs are pretty damn scary to walk down when you're wearing heels. Anyway. Ugglan is known for pingis - the Swedish cutesy term for ping-pong. It is also now the only game you can play for free. In one room there is a ping-pong table, and whoever wants to joins in for 'around the world' ping-pong, hitting the ball once and continuing to run around in a circle. It's a lot of fun really, and a nice way to start interacting with some Swedes! However, all of the other times I have been here in the past, you were allowed to play other games too. The game room was unsupervised and you could put in a few coins to play air hockey, or play around with boule or darts of your own accord. Not so anymore! You have to pay to get into the games room and participate in any such frivolities. The girl in the cash register made a big deal about how if we kept our receipts from the entrance fee, then we would get a discount on the games. Wait, what? So, if you pay the mandatory entrance fee, you get a discount on games? But you can't get in without paying the fee, which means you couldn't play games anyway....so....basically...there is no discount. The discount is a lie. Downstairs used to also have dirt floors (a lot of it, at least) and plenty of sofas. Now the entire place has hardwood floors and the cozy sofas have been replaced with weird hard chairs and low tables. Bleh. The reason it still gets three stars from me is that it's still cool and still fun. But the service is worse and the prices are high, and it's not as cool as it was. Very sad!

A perfect way to spend an afternoon in Stockholm!…read more We saw a deal on Groupon and decided to go for it. As it turns out, we didn't read very carefully and the deal actually wasn't valid until two weeks later. But when we called the staff were very friendly and helpful and said that we could go that day anyways, but that we would get three hours instead of the 7 (full day) promised in the Groupon deal. Since we were novices and didn't need a full day, and since we couldn't do it later anyways, it was wonderful that we gave us that option, although technically it wasn't as good of a deal. It was my first time ever kayaking, and I was nervous and didn't think we would move very quickly or get very far. The man said it would be easy for us to kayak all the way arund Kungsholmen and back to Långholmen, including an hour long break at Karlberg, and still be back within three hours. I didn't believe him, since I'm pretty weak - but it's true! We managed to kayak all the way around in just 1.5 hours (we didn't take a break). It was very exciting to see parts of Stockholm I've never seen before, especially from the water. You end up discovering all sorts of cool little swimming spots you never knew were there. Kayaking through the canals is beautiful, and you get an unbeatable view of the City Hall as well. It's great exercise and a ton of fun. The staff are unbeatable and very helpful and accommodating. After entering we decided to walk the path up to the park instead of buying a ticket for the funicular. It took roughly 10 minutes on a slight incline. Skansen was huge and does take time to go from place to place. Initially we wandered from building to building and many were not staffed or only viewable from the outside. While it was interesting to read the posted signs it wasn't too interesting. At the Oktorp farmstead, we finally found the first staffed location and got to see and learn about dying of yarn. Here we also learned which buildings were staffed and from that point forward gave us a plan of how to tackle Skansen and made the visit much more enjoyable. We had a great conversation about politics in the People's House which was very appropriate and compared it against present day in both our countries. Many parallels. We learned more about typical farm life in the Skane Farmstead while stooping low inside the house and that led to the Delsbo Farmstead. Delsbo was quite the opposite as it was ornately decorated with detailed wall paintings paid for by the well to do family per the staff. I highly encourage anyone visiting to engage with the staff as they were very enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge of the period or activities that went on in that particular farmstead, building, church, etc. We skipped seeing all the animals they kept towards the back of Skansen as well as the aquarium. Overall spent over 2 hours here and likely could've spent more if more buildings were staffed and open. Glad the weather held throughout our visit.

We took Stockholm Adventures' Archipelago Sailing Tour a week or so ago when we were visiting…read moreStockholm. I really wanted to spend a day out in the Archipelago to experience more than just what Stockholm's beautiful touristed areas have to offer. The Stockholm Archipelago is the largest archipelago in Sweden, and the second-largest archipelago in the Baltic Sea. The Stockholm Archipelago has been found to have slightly over 24,000 islands, islets, and skerries and covers approximately 1,700 km² (of which approximately 530 km² is land). As far as I was concerned, we just had to spend a day exploring it while we were in Sweden. I found Stockholm Adventures after another tour company cancelled our tour a couple of days before the tour we had booked with them. Stockholm Adventures made it easy to book another tour, so we didn't have to miss the Archipelago or rework our itinerary for the trip! The sailing tour was 8 hours long, and our guides provided a wonderful Smörgåsbord lunch and Fika in the afternoon. Our guide gave us a bit of a sailing lesson (he left this up to us, whether we wanted to learn about sailing or whether we just wanted to enjoy the day), which was great (might have piqued my interest to learn more about sailing now that I'm home). Our guides were very friendly and informative; we learned so much about the way that locals view life in Stockholm, the Archipelago, and Sweden. We also were able to visit an island that serves as our guide's boat club's Archipelago home, since it wasn't a weekend. Our tour ended up just being the two of us, so the tour felt very personalized to our interests. The information on the website and that we received by email before the tour was very helpful and informative (so we knew what to bring and where to meet once we arrived in Vaxholm). The day was a pleasure from start to finish, and I'm so glad we found this tour. It really added to our trip to Sweden. I wouldn't hesitate to use the company again if we are able to return to Sweden.
