I called & l/m 5 days ahead & the owner clearly states what times are available each day that week since they only have 5 tables. The owner called me back within an hour & confirmed our reservation. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly greeted by the owner & she immediately wished us a Happy Anniversary & had 2 roses in a vase for us to keep. Very romantic & quiet setting. The Bibb salad with the soy & Yuzu dressing was delicious & so fresh! We had the smoked salmon roll, steamed lobster roll & tuna tataki and all were delicious! This husband & wife team restaurant is a hidden gem (it's tucked in a plaza behind a gas station, so at night, it may be easy to miss!). If you're a sushi lover & will be in Hickory, call in advance & make your reservation! We are already looking forward to our next visit in the spring when our daughter's lacrosse team plays LR!

Tokyo Diner is your typical small town Japanese restaurant that offers sushi, fried rice, and…read morenoodles. A lot of the rolls were definitely unique to the area... more Americanized rolls than I had seen in other Japanese restaurants I have been to in large cities. It was not too packed when we went, so the noise level was fairly normal. There was ample seating inside as well as outside and the service was very friendly! I got the Hibachi Chicken and split the Crunchy Roll. The Crunchy Roll is essentially a shrimp tempura roll with cream cheese and some crunchy flakes on time. Unfortunately, I am not a big fan of cream cheese in my sushi, so this threw me off a bit, although it was still good and I wonder if you can just ask them to not add cream cheese. I will say the shrimp tempura tasted different compared to other shrimp tempura rolls that I have had... but not bad. The Hibachi Chicken was a large entree for a fairly affordable price! I liked the meal and I think the shrimp sauce definitely enhanced it (as usual), but the sauce did taste kind of ranch-y? The carrots were a bit too sweet for me, but the fried rice paired well with the chicken. Overall, I would think this is an okay place for basic Japanese food. I do not think it is going to blow your mind, but if you want to satisfy some simple cravings, this place will do the job. I would not mind coming back for a quick bite in the future. I think I would rate it 3.5/5 stars if I could.

The inside looks a bit outdated, but it was not that big of a deal to me as everything was running properly. I thought that the chefs were very cool to watch. I got the Hibachi Chicken. It was a really filling meal! This place does not skimp out on portions. I enjoyed how tender the zucchini and chicken were cooked and the shrimp sauce made it taste a lot better (who does not love shrimp sauce?!). I thought that everything was seasoned well, but a bit too well? My meal was a bit salty for my liking, but that is just a personal preference. As my first hibachi experience, I would probably give this place a 3.5/5 stars if I could. It is not overly fancy and works for a place like Hickory.

The staff was super friendly and we were sat quickly, our orders were taken quickly and the food and drinks came out quick. Only thing that could have been improved was the hibachi tricks!
