Sunnylands Center and Gardens is a historic estate open to the public. The former home of…read moreambassador Walter and Leonore Annenberg located in Rancho Mirage. As it is open to the public, it's also a venue for high level convenings and international diplomacy. The estate has been a retreat for US presidents and a convening place for world leaders since 1966. My first time here which I have heard quite a lot of things about this place. It's kind of hidden with only the sigh out front along the driveway. Hidden behind the walls, as you drive through the gate along the long driveway with the well maintained cactus garden landscape. You come upon the spectacular estate. The entire property is very well maintained with loads and loads of cactus and garden plants. The main building, information right when you walk in, a beautiful lobby that looks out to the most amazing garden and grassy knoll, gift shop, cafe and the museum. Besides the property which is free to check out and walk through the gardens, they also offer a guided tour of the estate which I believe is with a driven golf cart. Right when you walk in the museum is to the left side of the main building. The lobby is right in the middle which looks out to the garden. Cafe, gift shops and restrooms is to the right. Cafe does have outdoor seating but it was quite hot today. Once you walk out to the garden, the massive grassy knoll is the focal point. I'm sure loads of amazing events have been held here. The gardens are all pretty much desert plants as you are in the desert. Two beautiful water feature on both side as you walk out. Just wandering through the gardens which are path is quite relaxing. Bench are placed throughout for seating and just enjoying this property. As you drive in, both side of the driveway is part of the garden as well. There's a wildflower garden which looked pretty massive from the maps was still under construction. But the other gardens are spectacular. It's amazing how something so beautiful is just tucked away behind a wall. The mid century property is literally Palm Springs architecture at its best. This place is worth checking out as it's free. A nice wander and enjoy what Palm Springs has to offer and learn some things.

The tours were either sold out or had one spot available. There were 2 of us. I would recommend purchasing tickets online before you arrive to Palm Springs because of the popularity of the tours. You cannot purchase tickets by phone, email or in person. There are no waitlists either. We walked among the garden area, visited the small but great gift shop, watched the movie about Sunnylands and viewed the current exhibition. The next time we're in the Palm Springs area I will definitely plan ahead and purchase tickets way in advance.

One of the many Little Free Libraries around town…read more This Little Free Library is very nicely crafted; you can see the love of its steward in many details. The books are carefully curated and usually in pristine condition. The steward has even included bookmarks and a visitor's log. There are many effusive comments in the visitor's log; the community appears appreciative of and well behind this little operation. Privately owned and what appears to still have a home property onsite, Moorten Botanical features over 3,000 species of cacti. Another unique component is the rare Cactarium which is a greenhouse featuring cactus and succulents. Admission is $7 cash or card and there is always staff available to greet guests. A paper map is provided post payment to help navigate the grounds. I recommend sunscreen as a majority of the viewing takes place outside and the sun tends to beat down. Onsite there are a variety of large tortoises in specialty spots enjoying their environment. At the end of the garden, there is a nursery where plants can be purchased along with gardening trinkets. For the value, this is one to not miss! I've been coming here for years since I was a little girl and I enjoy the fact that Moorten sticks to their roots and have kept the layout the same allowing me to feel nostalgia each time I visit. Who knew there could be so many varieties of cactus. There's on street parking. Admission fee is $7 unless you're a veteran, then it's $5.
