I found that they have an ancient printing press and can demonstrate letterpress printing. They also are able to do traditional book binding as well as colour photo copying, a run of business cards even raffle tickets. They sell a range of art materials from half pans, tubes of professional grade watercolours acrylics and oil paints. Then you can have all kinds of specialist paper that can be cut to size. And if you are into paper, then ask about their Paper Making Museum.

This looked like an interesting shop that gave little away from the outside, and so I ventured in…read moreto investigate further. What this shop offers that sets it aside from others nearby is a range of (mainly artistic) hobby products. This includes various types of paints, brushes and even Revell model aircraft kits I used to construct as a child that I haven't seen out with a model shop for years. As well as this, there is a good selection of useful stationery including school type jotters, which can sometimes be a rare find, and pipe cleaners! Something that is on every Blue Peter watchers wish list. The staff were very friendly and I enjoyed having a good chat with the owner about the local area and her shop. The pricing however, seemed quite variable and I felt myself slightly concerned at the apparent expense of some of the stationery products. However, I'm rating relatively high purely for the nostalgic value added by the model kits and the availability of artistic products which can be quite hard to come by.

I have some really warm memories of Ink Spot from when i was a kid. It was always the place i…read morelooked forward to coming to when my mum and dad took me shopping to Hamilton. I loved crafty stuff and it sold some pretty cool toys too, like the Anne Geddes Babies i used to collect. It sits apart from the main cluster of shops and the shopping centre, on the way down to the big Asda. This place is an Aladdin's Cave of stationery. Need an HB pencil? Come here. A pink Filofax with kittens on it? Second shelf on the left madam. Biro that transforms into a deckchair? Yup, you'll find one here. But be warned , you'll pay for it! It really isn't cheap, so if you only need the basics i would suggest trying somewhere else first. However if you are a crafty connoisseur, or you're looking for something very specific, Ink Spot is the place for you! (Disclaimer: A transforming deckchair Biro does not yet exist. I made that bit up. So you may get a funny look if you ask for one here.)

So I must confess - I have a bit of a stationery fetish. Nothing quite like the smell of a freshly…read moresharpened pencil or like rows of coloured pencils lined up by shade (yes yes I did and still do crave the entire set of crayola colours!!!) Anyway, this place has so many cool art supplies that even the most non-artistic, non-creative person in the world will be compelled to purchase some funky craft paper or some random modelling clay or engineering grade pencil. School projects and Brownie badge work has been aided with supplies from here and I can never resist popping in when I have a minute and I am nearby. They have, in the past few years, got a range of fancy dress costumes as well - so they are branching out somewhat from merely traditional stationery supplies. I don't know if that is a direction I am really loving, but in this economy, anything that helps local independent businesses is fine by me. This place is NOT cheap though and is its main failing. I would seriously doubt if art students would actually buy their supplies from here, If the prices were a little bit lower and the staff didn't look at you as if you were about to shop lift then I would love it even more. It is definitely a stationers as opposed to a full on specialist art store I reckon. As an art shop for true artists (although clearly I am not, and am just surmising, I would definitely give it a 3. As a place to find cool knick knacks, gifts and pens with a good motion (see told you I was obsessed!) then possibly a 4. On the whole it is a pretty shop with lots of lovely goodies and some luxurious stationery. With slightly lower prices this would be a 4 overall, bit as it stands a solid 3!

With a kiln on site the place is about 10 degrees hotter than outside! They have a mum and baby morning between 10 and 12 on Tuesdays and another I believe on a Thursday but I would check that beforehand. For £5 you can get a cup of coffee and a small coaster to paint. You can always pay more for any of the other items. As well as just being able to paint the pottery you can have casts made of your wee ones hands and feet. There is also a soft play area for older toddlers if they get bored of painting! The reasons why I couldn't give this place a five was firstly the heat and secondly the price of anything else you should wish to paint....it was quite expensive! The staff are absolutely lovely in here and so helpful. The next rainy day I reckon we'll be in again. The place is also quite buggy friendly too.

This one in Marchmont is like the others and allows, children, mothers' groups and even hen parties to come in and decorate their own mugs, plates and bowls. It's actually quite a good idea and seems to appeal to schools for days out and parents can relax in the cafe whislt their children paint ceramic stuff or enjoy themselves in the soft play area. I'm not sure how the hen parties work, but inside they advertise it as a raucous BYO wine affair, the perfect beginning to a girls' night out apparantly.
