This nearly 60 year old bridge crosses a key part of the Intracoastal waterway between the mainland and the Outer Banks towards Roanoke Island. The bridge carries US Highway 64 between the towns of Alligator in Tyrrell County and East Lake in Dare County over the Alligator River. It is 2.8 miles from shore to shore, making it one of the longest bridges in North Carolina.
It's a perfectly functional bridge that leaves aesthetics to the side. A high wood railing pretty much prevents any great views of the water even at the higher spots where the swing span opens for marine traffic.
The bridge is named for Congressman Lindsay Carter Warren (1889-1976). He served in the House of Representatives from 1925 to 1940, being re-elected seven times. When he resigned, he accepted the post of Comptroller General under President Franklin Roosevent, leading the General Accounting Office through World War II. read more
