"How is it that you were smart enough to read and write at 4 but still can't cut paper?!" she would lament. Ok...so I'm not crafty. I still can't cut or sew a straight line to save myself. I didn't get that gene passed down from Mum. So she's the real reason why I come here. This place is like craft-mum-crack. She can't get enough. Yarn, ribbons, thread - I see 10 types of string and Mum sees all the possibilities for the beautiful things she could make. For the grandkids that I also haven't produced for her (sorry Mum!) Still, I can see that the things here are beautiful and unique. Having been invited *cough* dragged *cough* to visit many a craft store in my day, none have been filled with so many vintage knick-knacks and girly delightful things. So if your Mum gave you the craft-gene or you're present shopping for something unique, navigate your way through the Nicholson Building and check out L'Uccello.

Prices are also fair/ middle of the road for other retailers in Melbourne. It's the service from Michael that was so appalling. Never have I had treat someone treat me with such a condescending, rude approach. Yes Michael is very knowledgable about his silks, but when his firm assertions ( about colour) were shown to be incorrect, he started criticising my fabric knowledge, 'what would I know about fabric' and similar - I've never experienced such rudeness in a retail shop. The other staff members were lovely and very helpful, but once Michael took over serving, the interaction turned incredibly sour. I'm not the type to hold onto such things, but I was left frustrated and annoyed for at least a week afterwards! I was at pains to purchase the fabric from them, yes I had exhausted all other options in Melbourne and it WAS perfect, but the service was just so gobsmacking obnoxious! Avoid the owner if you must shop there!

Think of it like Lincraft but with a more specific product selection, better quality and in a warehouse. I wouldn't say the prices are amazing, but they're not expensive either. The reason I don't rave about Rathdowne is that you sort of have to get lucky. I suppose it's like that with a lot of retail stores, but generally half the reason you're at a fabric shop in the first place is because you can't find what you want in a regular store. To put it simply, if you like browsing fabric shops this one has a gorgeous selection to look at. If you have your heart set on a particular kind of lace or type of wool jersey or whatever, then you're better of at a speciality store.

Every kind of fabric is here, at ridiculous prices, and all good quality. The best bit is the various remnant bins and the near-end rolls where one can find all manner of delightful bits and bobs to make something unique and stunning. My best friend was getting a corset made for her by designer Dolly Q, who insisted (and escorted us) that we choose our fabric at Rathdowne. The result? Seriously stunning, and an entire outfit (we made the skirt out of cream satin also bought there) for less than $250. If you're serious about dressmaking, or have a dress that you want made, I would suggest a visit here first to check out the fabrics on offer.
