If you want to sort of rough it, but still have access to showers, flush toilets, and clean water, Limekiln Lake is the place for you. I stayed here for one night in early July while hiking in the region. $20 per night (plus a $9 reservation fee) might be a little steep compared to other states, but it gets you clean restrooms, free showers, and a large site with a picnic table, fire pit, and bear locker. Yes, I said bear locker. They make you sign a form saying you won't leave food out for the bears when you check in.
When I say the site was big, I mean it. Easily space for 2 cars, a decent-sized trailer, and 2 tents on the site and you'd still have room to walk around. My 2-person tent and small car made the place feel empty. Potable water was on the other side of the access road and toilets a short walk away. A wooded buffer space of 20 or so feet separated adjacent campsites, so it didn't feel like anybody was encroaching on my space. No cell service, so I could truly disconnect.
The missing star is for a few things. One, the slightly-high price, which admittedly is far cheaper than most other lodging in the region. Two, the only thing sold at the campground is ice, so make sure to buy your firewood and other supplies before you arrive. I don't care about this myself, but if you want utility hookups for a trailer, they don't exist here. read more
