I explained to them how much sentimental value my ring held, but they were adamant that a repair was not possible. So, I decided to get a second opinion and visited Smith Jewellers, also in Glasgow. I was delighted when Karen told me that my ring could, in fact, be repaired. She explained that the claws in the cluster simply needed to be strengthened to secure the setting. The work was completed within two weeks, and at a fraction of the cost quoted by the first jeweller. Karen and her husband at Smith Jewellers are such a friendly couple; very approachable people who genuinely care about their work. And, if you're a dog lover, you'll be greeted by their two adorable dogs in the workshop, who make you feel even more welcome! I was so impressed with the service that I also entrusted Smith Jewellers with my late mother's engagement ring. As it was too large for me, I had never worn it, but within two weeks it had perfectly been resized. Once I collected the ring, it looked brand new and beautifully sparkling. Now, I can wear my mum's engagement ring every day; it feels like I have a little piece of her with me, wherever I go. It's rather dirty, there's a rickety old lift with the pull over metal bars and the whole place smells of very strong disinfectant. If you are a little put off by the lift then don't worry as there is a friendly man who works in the lift opening and closing the doors and helping customers find what they are looking for. Smiths is on the third floor and as I said, when you enter it isn't glamorous but do not let that put you off as the people working here are experts at their trade. I used to work in a jewellers and whenever our workshop was full - the rest was sent to Smiths. Many Jewellers in the city centre use Smiths and I have seen Links of London staff here many a time when I have popped in. I also get my own personal jewellery sized and repaired here. They've sized a few rings for me and also taken links out of bracelets, ring sizing is never more than £10 for silver and if you need something quick smart they can generally sort something out for you. Smiths has been in the business for years and even though it's not shiny and sparkly, chances are if you've had something sized from a jewellers in Glasgow they'll have sent it here to save them waiting to get it sized in their own workshops if they're too busy.

The required ring wasn't in stock but the assistant was happy to order in for us. During the course of the order she advised us there was a further 20% discount available on the ring but that sadly they only had sizes up to S. She spoke to her manager and then advised us they'd be happy to have the ring sized up for us and would so without charge. I know H Samuel has a reputation as a pretty mass market jewellers but on the day our assistant demonstrated the really excellent level of customer service I'd expect from a top notch supplier.

You can find everything in here, from traditional gold and antiques, to modern gems by contemporary designers. The walls and ceiling sparkle with the reflected light of a million facets - most people can only afford to browse. Wandering around here is an enjoyable way to spend half an hour. Deciding what you would buy if you found £10,000 or even £100,000 just lying in the street (Ha!). One end of the arcade emerges on Buchanan Street, the other on Argyll Street, so it is a nice alternative link between the two streets, especially if it is raining.

Unfortunately, Herself had the inside track on this flyby, and before I could do anything I was unceremoniously yanked into the shop as she had been seduced by some trinket in the (admittedly very attractive) window display. Before five minutes had passed, she had grabbed several items from the clothes rail by the door and was heading rearwards to the changing room to try them on, while I mooched around like the long-suffering husband I am, trying not to look like a shoplifter as I browsed the goodies on display. Both the ladies on duty were very chatty and friendly, which makes all the difference in these small gift shops - although the sample dish of tablet on the counter also helped it must be said. They have a great selection of Scottish- and Glasgow-themed knick-knacks on display as well as more generic items, so you'll have no trouble in finding a gift for that special person in your life. However, although I was impressed with several items and earmarked them for future gift purchases (I particularly liked the hanging jam jar lights), on this occasion I managed to escape with my wallet intact. Not so my good lady, who came away feeling very pleased with herself and her purchases.

This family travel across the globe to find the best materials to use in their stunning jewelry. As well as selling their own designs, Eric N Smith also stock some top of the range brands such as Faberge, Montblanc, Breitling, Gucci and Bulgari. When I visited the store looking for a unique ring to celebrate my 21st an assistant sat with me for at least an hour while I hummed and hawed over what I wanted. She was extremely knowledgeable and was very mindful of my limited budget of £100. I ended up with a beautiful silver ring in a really unusual shape with a lovely green peridot stone in it. I had picked the metal, the band and the size, shape and colour of the stone for myself, with the help of the assistant, and I am happy to know that no-one else will have a ring exactly like mine. Next time you are in the market for a piece of jewelry for yourself or a loved one consider trying Eric N Smith instead of heading for the usual Links Of London and Pandora type stores. We visited on a Saturday and sat down to chat to Anthony about what we wanted. He was so helpful and gave us lots of advice about settings, metals, diamonds - the works. I think we ended up going for about 3 consultations with him for different designs and settings, and when we had finally decided he had it printed in plastic on a 3D printer so I could try it on and make sure I was happy with it. The whole process was relaxed and fun, and made the whole experience of getting engaged even more enjoyable. We went back when we were getting married and got wedding bands made and he designed mine so it interlocked with my engagement ring. So if you're ever looking for custom-made jewellery I would strongly advise going here.

It was perfectly me. The little purple box told me that it was from Bethsy Gray Silver Jewellery. I had never heard of it or been in before but, as a huge fan of silver jewellery, I was certainly going to seek it out. My boyfriend encouraged me telling me that Bethsy herself made the jewellery on site and helped him pick the perfect necklace for me. Wow, impressive. I popped in later with a friend and discovered it was even more delightful than I imagined. The jewellery is displayed within vintage store Starry Starry Night where Bethsy was working away in her workshop. She popped her head out with a welcoming and friendly smile asking if we needed a hand and happily left us to browse. The jewellery is made of sterling silver and semi-precious stones and comes in all beautiful shapes and designs. There are bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings, cufflinks and even tiaras and if you don't find what you're looking for you can commission Bethsy to produce your perfect little piece. I love it and now adore my necklace even more having seen where it was carefully created.

It's amazing how much they have managed to fit in here, and the tall glass cabinets combined with a central display table really showcase the jewellery well. There is also a small selection of gorgeous bags hanging along a low rail. The price range is huge, from pieces at around £500, right down to the £10 bangle I got for part of Maw's birthday present. There are so many lovely things in here, and with prices to suit every budget, I have already dropped a couple of hints now that the Christmas season is drawing near.

It's a little confusing because the window display is like you'd see at a jewellery store, so don't let that put you off if you're looking for a present. Inside they have a pretty big range of stuff - teddy bears seem to be a main feature as there's a whole wall of them (Charlie Bears). They're also pretty expensive! They also sell watches and then other collectable items. If you knew someone who liked collecting figurines then this could be a good place to shop. Personally, it's not my kind of stuff but the staff were friendly enough while we browsed.
