This is one of three Bardstown campgrounds. This one is is the closest to downtown. We were taking the long route to downtown the first couple of trips out, so don't make that mistake and know your surroundings. I still prefer My Old Kentucky Home state park campground though.
We stayed here for Kentucky Bourbon Festival Week. It was on the Bourbon City Taxi free shuttle stop route. The other two campgrounds were booked to maximum capacity months before. The reservation process here was sketchy. It started with the first call when the old man (as described in other online reviews) abruptly said that they were full for that week. My husband called back and the next time he asked him to call back when he would be in the office. That time there was availability. But he didn't even take down a credit card number and stated that it's cash only. Which is why there were a ton of "no shows".
When we arrived, Mr. Man lived up to his online review reputation. When my husband told him that we would be checking out on Saturday instead of Sunday, Mr. Man dropped the eff bomb a few times and charged us an extra $20 and put us in a site near the road. I get it, it was an inconvenience but at least we showed up for 5 nights. We later made up and he apologized for putting us "way down there". Oh, and it turns out that he isn't the owner, he's just the camp host.
Prices are currently $30 per night for water and electric sites. There are a few sites with sewer hookups and those are an extra $5 per night.
The dump station is locked after checkout time. So, if you need a late checkout, ask ahead of time and do be prepared to be offended or cussed out ;)
There's a beautiful pond and a fire pit area with benches. The sites don't have fire pits. We only walked down to the pond area once. Mr. Man was there, on his golf cart, sipping a Miller Lite. We asked if fishing was allowed and he said "only for the people staying here". The day after checkin and he'd already forgotten us. Super worrisome since we paid cash.
If you're not easily offended, and you're looking for the closest camp ground to downtown, I'd recommend it. I'd definitely avoid staying in any of the sites that back up to the main road, due to the road traffic noise. So, ask for a pond front site. read more
