    Can I put a zero? If we didn't have our board of trustees and we weren't being ran by Surfside…read morePreservation, this would be a grand place to live. But since this specialized political group got together and started deciding that their homes were the only important homes in Surfside, things have changed. Members no longer have a voice. Members are no longer able to do floor motions and pass them during a member's meeting. We no longer have fair voting. I could go on and on and on. Surfside is a beautiful place, but it's no longer a place where members have anything to say about how their own properties are run. The Board of Trustees and Surfside Preservation are totally destroying the ecology of the area and we now have toxic blue green algae on what they're now calling the ditch instead of the lake that I bought my house on, and the forest that we used to have here next to the ocean which made us unique and one of the reasons I purchased my property has now been totally taken down and we look like something in the middle of the desert. The people that are saying nice things are people who are part of Surfside preservation. These are not nice human beings. The only rules they follow are for their benefit. My property is lost $50,000 in value because of what they have written into rule in my area. They are not considering our ecosystem and what it means to our entire community. They do not believe in science!

    Surfside HOA is a non-profit corporation belonging to property owners in the Surfside Estates…read moresubdivision located in Ocean Park WA. Surfside is beautiful place where owners can enjoy the lovely beach and other attractions on the Long Beach Peninsula. Surfside is a unique vacation community comprised of about 80% part-time vacationers and 20% full-time residents. There are variety of owners and property types, including beach-front homes, condos, cottages, manufactured homes, partially-developed recreational RV lots and undeveloped lots used for camping or potential homesites. Most of the people have purchased property here so they can enjoy nature, fishing, clamming and beach-combing on the clean, uncrowded beach. It is a great place to escape the city and relax with family & friends. Unfortunately, the Surfside HOA has long been dominated by a minority of the members who live in Surfside year-round. These members have managed to control the Board of Trustees who work together for the self-interests of the full-timers, treating the other owners unfairly and furthering their own agendas. The draconian Board controls the HOA's governing documents and Covenants, lording their power over the residents with the help of a small cadre of owners and the HOA's attorney whom they have hired and who defends every action of the Board. The Board is able to retain control by impeding the other members ability to organize the majority of members. They violate the state law (RCWs) by withholding member contact information so members cannot communicate or organize. With most members residing outside the county and state, it is difficult to coordinate meetings or distribute information. The HOA charges members an excessive "administrative fee" of $100 for access to membership records and illegally withholds email addresses. Members may not publish articles or meeting notices in Surfside's online newsletter, it's website or the newsletter which is mailed to all members twice a year. The HOA has resisted member initiatives to expand the use of technology to connect members via an interactive website, livestream meetings and electronic voting. After fighting with the Board for months to establish a technology committee of members, the Board arbitrarily and prematurely shut it down and rejected a final report as a punitive action for members speaking out against Trustees at the Annual Meeting. Members are not permitted to vote on the Covenants or changes to them. Covenants are selectively enforced, targeting specific groups such as RV lot owners who are required to obtain & post permits to use their property, are limited to when they can use their property and are deprived the use of their property for months. The Covenants also favor other groups like those who live in the ridge, enforcing tree heights of other property owners and making them pay to keep trees trimmed, often resulting in damage or destruction of the trees. Tree heights are set arbitrarily and are inconsistent; although the Covenants do not mention views, but height limits apply only to properties between the ridge properties and the beach. Covenants conflict with the Pacific County ordinances and Trustees have used undue political influence with county officials to further their agenda. Members have been denied the right to make and vote on floor motions at Annual Meetings with a quorum of meetings. The Board conducts HOA business in secret meetings, excluding some Trustees and without providing notice to all members or meeting in public as required by the RCWs. Most recently Surfside has been the subject of investigations by the state of WA and Feds (EPA) over improper handling and disposal of hazardous materials (ACM pipe). They also failed to get required permits and conduct environmental impact study before building a new water treatment system. Both of these actions incur fines and potentially criminal charges. The Board has been engaged in harassment and targeted lawsuits against members who are political enemies, incurring significant legal expenses. This mismanagement is costing the members who must pay for all of this in Association apportionments. Those of us who value the community are stuck with a mess that we hope can be corrected over time and restore Surfside to a place for relaxation and recreation.
