How can you live in Houston and not take advantage of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston? I honestly…read morewish I could go even more often than I already do with my membership. I love supporting the arts, and visiting the museum has become something of an annual tradition for me, especially during June and July. I usually go with friends or family, and it's always such a nice experience. I love the atmosphere. There's something about walking around, taking your time with the artwork, and just enjoying the space. I've also randomly met some of the greatest and most interesting people while we're all just there checking out the art. Whether you're really into art or just looking for something enjoyable to do in Houston, MFAH is absolutely worth visiting. It's one of those places that reminds me how much Houston has to offer.

Pricing for the museum is $24. There are several garages in the area to park at and parking is charged a hourly rate. Unfortunately I was short on time but was able to visit the Frida collection, Aztec civilization, and Islamic Art collections. All of the art work was unique. The Frida collection was extremely popular and that's where most of the museums visitors spent their time. Overall I really enjoyed my experience here and wish I had more time to explore. They do have several dining options at the museum including a Michelin star French restaurant, Le Jardinier. The menu looks great and looks like they had a lunch 2 course option there for $45.

Be sure to look for coupon codes when buying your tickets: our order was initially going to be around $270 for 3 adults, 4 kids -- but we got $70 off through an online promo code. Entry includes a "build your own slime" bar - you get to pick out the type of slime feel you want, then pick the color and fragrance, and pick 3 plastic charms to take home. They have handwashing stations at the start and after the build-your-own-slime bar. The only things I didn't like about it were the smells could be very strong because the slimes are fragranced with different cool smells. Some of us were feeling a little bit headache-y or nauseous or weird by the end, probably from the smells. This place is probably a one-and-done for us. Fun but the smells were a bit overwhelming, and even after washing our hands, our hands still smelled very fragranced after we left, which was irritating for some of us.

Meow Wolf…read moredidn't appeal to the littles (under 10) because they were too eager to move to the next thing to fully enjoy each thing in the moment. The first room you get to was the dj booth and it was severely underwhelming...only the one 40 year old male in our group liked it. The littles couldn't figure out how to make it work well enough for them to enjoy...and they refused to let anyone help them. The 1950s vibe with its paneling felt cheap and aesthetically reeked of Grandmas house. Just my opinion but I'd modernize those 1950s elements to make the experience less "Munsters" and more "Monsters Inc."...but with todays "Maxamalist" trend, most people will probably appreciate the "WKRP in Cincinnati" vibe. Overall, from an artist perspective it was too much junk and not enough art in the mix. They still could have used all the junk...just in a better way in some areas. I did really love the teeny tiny bar built in to the bottom of the metal pole in cowboix hevvvven, it was an unexpected treasure and the monster bartender smoking not one but three cigarettes cracked me up. I liked the doors disguised as other things..vending machine, elevator, fridge and etc., and the concept of the tornado room but I thought it was weakly executed if the goal is to portray a tornado I would have liked to have seen the car tilted on one side like it was lifting off and possibly a bit of "wind" in the room,..the water hoses all over the place needed an exaggerated shadow or something.. but the little kids and 20-30 year old's and non artsy people would easily love it and artsy people who can just throw random paint on a canvas and call it art...those people would love it too. Maybe I've grown old and judgy because I kept finding things I wanted to "do over" or "tweek" for them. If I could just turn that off and appreciate what is already there it would have changed the whole narrative for me. Apologies to the masterminds who created all of this, on the whole it is a brilliant masterpiece. The seek and find room was fun for the kids and the rotating blacklight was a nice touch...but it was soo doomsday with all the brown and black..and I get it that its supposed to be stuff submerged in dirt but the 80s girl in me would have preferred sand instead of dirt or at least a layer of sand near the top and possibly a tiny ray of breakthough sunlight from the ceiling and maybe a layer of "water" (clear turquoise epoxy maybe?) on top to give it a ray of hope among the gloom. The dungeon room where you line up the radio waves to make lightning overhead had all the elements of being a fun room with its little alcoves, cute little cave monsters, musical wall and etc but only one person in our group of 8 was inspired to try all the things in that room...but to be fair, she's the one who downloaded the app that helped you discover all the things the room had to offer and it took a long time to make the cool ceiling light up. The little kids were so excited about going through disguised doors they forgot to look in all the cabinets to discover all the cool stuff in the break room and a few of the other rooms. Seriously, if you go, download the app..it makes the experience way better. Its not really a place you'd enjoy as much if you had mobility issues..there is an elevator but going to the elevator breaks of the flow if you are with a group with kids who want to go up and down every 5 minutes. Actually, there was a second elevator but it wasn't operational when we were there. The bathrooms were very clean and we appreciated that there were places to get a drink (cowboix hevvven) or snack (the littles got rice crispy treats) inside the attraction.

I don't go to Rice or anything but anyone is welcome to come to quite alot of the events and/or exhibitions they have..! Some of the few I've been to are the recent Yoshitomo Nara exhibition and the beekeeping/real fish painting workshop ‍ Those were really fun and wonderful, at the time I got the chance to go with a friend which made it even better. Would recommend checking out what they have running and making memories with someone chu luv..! Butt! It's also the perfect spot for a solo date too. Don't feel shy going alone ‍ In fact, on my most recent visit this last Saturday (02/28/2026) I went solo to an outdoor show they apparently hold seasonally. And this time the performer was an artist I know and really like named Raveena! A modern r&b, jazz, pop desi-american singer. She was soooo amazing live, the crowd was very chill and happy to see her, the students who set up her stage? made it SO CUTE andd they even served free drinks felt like a really sweet and swell way to end february~

Sip & Stroll Art Tour…read more Have you ever wondered how art is selected for a certain space? Was it commissioned? Donated? Was it made specifically for a space? Was it already designed? So interesting to join the Moody Center for the Arts Executive Director Allison Weaver on a walk to explore the art on the Rice University campus. An art gallery. Tents with murals. Indoor and outdoor stops. So much fun to stroll through the campus and enjoy works by Jaume Plensa, James Surls, Beverly Pepper and Mark di Suvero. Love the classic giant people formed by huge letters sculpted by Jaume Plensa. The Crown Fountain in Chicago is another well loved piece by Jaume Plensa. Interesting to hear how a work of art either fits or does not fit into a space. For example, Po-um by Mark di Suvero was in a place where the kinetic sculpture did not get the wind it needed to be able to move. Imagine having to uproot and transplant a twisted steel work that weighs hundreds of pounds, but that is what was done. Jaume Plensa wanted his sculpture Mirror to be along a walkway that would have been sweltering in the Houston heat. It looks so much more inviting nestled among the oaks. In fact, you can walk into the sculpture and sometimes students bring chairs to study near the piece. Interesting to hear also about the sea-saws that were used during the pandemic to allow students to interact while keeping them safely six feet apart. The tents served a similar purpose, but also served as a canvas for oversized murals. Don't miss James Turrell's Twilight Epiphany Skyspace. Climb the stairs to reach the second floor. Our tour ended at sunset just in time to watch the sunset sequence which lasts for about 40 minutes. So beautiful. Check out the Moody Center for the Arts Calendar. Admission and tours are free. Parking is available on paid lots on the Rice University Campus.

This folk art style house, located in the Rice Military neighborhood, is covered in beer cans, bottles, and pull tabs, making it kind of a Houston landmark. The project was started by John Milkovisch, who, along with his wife Mary, saved empty beer cans for 17 years. While it may not have started as an artistic endeavor, it definitely became one. Ripley's Believe It or Not estimated that over 50,000 beer cans were used, though a more detailed count by a restoration team puts it closer to 30,000. Honestly, I don't know how many cans there are--but the sheer scale and creativity of it make the place undeniably unique and interesting. The Beer Can House is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM, and admission is free, which makes it an easy and fun stop. Walking around, you can see how every detail is covered in some form of recycled beer material. It's whimsical, creative, and just so quirky. If you're looking for something different to do in Houston, this is a must-see. It's a great mix of folk art, local culture, and a testament to how even the most ordinary materials can be transformed into something extraordinary. Love it!
