The man behind the counter told me everything is handmade by the woman who creates the earrings. As an avid surfer, we have started a personal "wave art" collection in our home. We are not the…read moresuper rich folks but we try to collect paintings dealing with water. There are abundance of "impressionist" ocean paintings out there, mostly formulaic, but our focus is to find pictures that capture the moment of being there... like bring in a surfing lineup, or just before I paddle out for surf. That means the images do not have to be photo-realistic (and you got your mobile device camera for that anyway!) What Kate has collected really resonated with my idea of surf paintings should be. And so if you agree with me, this gallery is a well worthwhile stop. For example check out Grant Pecoff's work. A bit whimsical, it really convey the fun of being "out there." And that's what I like. Grant Pecoff is one of my favorite artists and bought one of his wonderful books as a gift for a friend back home. Hadn't planned to buy anything for myself but when I saw the original watercolor by the artist Coco, it stopped me dead in my tracks. The painting brought back wonderful memories of living in Miami growing up and bobbing happily in the surf for hours. It's called "The Cure" and knew I had to have it. It's now home with me in Colorado and will bring me joy every day! The owner of the The Bright Side (Kate) seems very knowledgeable and was so sweet in working with me to buy the painting.

I like art and always like to check out galleries when I am traveling. Bustling Kapaa is only good enough for a pit stop between the north and south shores in my opinion, so I was surprised to find a gallery here when strolling around looking for something to eat. The gallery has some beautiful Koi Fish paintings, which are probably the main attraction. The artist of most of them, Seamus, was in the store both times I went in there (and I got the impression he is there a lot) in case you have questions for him. I'm not into Koi although I know a lot of people are for the symbolism, but the Koi paintings (and other ocean/water themed works) are vivid in color and worth checking out if passing by. If you are into fantasy-type ocean scene paintings, the ones in this shop are on par with Wyland and much more reasonable in price! I'm not into Koi or fantasy-art, and ended up going for an abstract piece that resembled waterfalls, painted in blues/greens with gold leaf, on a piece of birch wood. Very beautiful and changes with the lighting. The store curator, Ray, is a flexible on price and delivery methods. I left feeling like I paid handsomely for the art, but I got a deal. We were interested in an expensive painting that had a very nice glass and wood frame. She sold us on the painting then weirdly told us "it was just sold". BUT the artist can do another original exactly like it and she will ship it to us (We took a picture of it and happy to share this). Well, this is her scam! What she sent us was a piece of literal garbage - a replica picture about 1/3 the size that looked like it was done on a photo copier! She also put it in an oversized cheap plastic frame with plastic cover ($1 dollar frame!)! She obviously pocketed our money (hundreds of dollars) and thought being "dumb tourists" we would just accept this. This is known as "bait and switch" - it is not only unethical, it is also illegal. DO NOT GO HERE. SHE WILL RIP YOU OFF AND HER "ORIGINALS" ARE NOTHING OF THE KIND. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

I have been coming to Kauai for over 20 years and the North Shore in particular holds a very…read morespecial place in my heart. It's my happy place and some of my happiest memories are of being here with my family. Over the last 4-5 trips I have started skipping the touristy draws and trying to really immerse myself in the culture and community (farmers markets, kappa street party, picking avocados off trees outside the parking lot in hanalei, getting lost on random roads and exploring some of the less traveled towns). On my last trip to Kauai I caught wind of an art night down in Hanapepee. I had only been to this cute little town once the year before in search a pharmacy, but couldn't help but notice Georgios Art Gallery. He had a particular tree painting outside on display that literally jumped off the canvas. We wandered around the rooms admiring his works. Stunning. I've never been much of an art person and oil paintings in particular haven't really interested me much. The way Georgio paints is so unique. It's different than anything else I've ever seen. In our first trip to Georgio's we didn't buy anything as we somewhat nauseous from our ride down from the canyon (although we regretted it) but were excited to stop in on him for the Art Night (sans a trip to Waimea this time). We walked in and were immediately greeted by Georgio himself. He offered us some wine and we were immediately drawn to the bold colors and textures once again. Then we saw it. It was an elephant (that I'll also post on here) and were pulled into the painting. It was probably one of the most amazing paintings we had ever seen. So, minutes later we were finalizing the sale with Georgio. As we continued to walk around the art night to different galleries we kept on reflecting on how great HIS art was. So we went back. After falling for many other pieces the major display piece (which was already framed and matted with different colors of blue silk) spoke to my soul. It brought me back to my first trip to Kauai sitting in the back of my parents convertible with my younger sister (who has since passed away) looking up at a million stars, hearing the roar of crashing waves, smelling the ocean, and watching the white caps of the waves coming into shore. The memory was cemented into my brain and Georgio caught that memory for me. It is a starry night shot of the north shore (which I will also post). Hands down Georgio's art is the best in all of Kauai and we feel so lucky to have a couple amazing pieces in our home all the way across the country in Boston. He shipped them to us for free in homemade custom wooden boxes! The amount of compliments we have received on both pieces in just a matter of a few months says it all. You can also tell how much time and effort goes into the details. (I'm still noticing details in Starry Night I hadn't noticed before). Georgio was talking about moving his gallery in the near future... All I have to say is make sure we can find you later this year! We have some open walls!

On vacation on Kauai, I came across Mr. Bader's wood sculpture in a little gallery on the main drag…read morein Hanapepe that he shares with his wife, Becky Wold who does marbled paper and fabrics. Hopefully they will "yelp" the actual address, but you cant miss it. It's between the old hotel and little market opposite the Aloha Theatre. Ms. Wold was in the gallery, and her work looked nice, but it was the turned bowls, vases and platters of her husband that caught my eye. Mr. Bader has an excellent sense of design and proportion. I like very simple, modern forms and his turnings reminded me of what exotic woods would look like in the hands of Eva Zeisel or George Nelson. He uses local woods and his pieces sometimes take 6 months from conception to completion. The first turning takes to wood down to 1" thickness, where it is allowed to dry and cure for 6 months before the final turning, when thicknesses as minimal as 1/8" are achieved. The lighter colored wood he uses is even translucent. He had a large non-functional platter that would make a cool wall hanging with a light behind it. These are not salad bowls! The pieces are not cheap but considering the work involved and the beauty of the design, I would consider them a very good value. I've seen a lot of wood carving on the Islands over the years, and this is by far the finest I've seen--the difference between a craftsman and an artist. I'll save my sheckels for my next visit to Kauai!
