I frequently shopped at the Light Cellar when I lived in Calgary...and even took a class there! What a joy it was. When I visit Calgary, I typically stop there. Recently, I'm so disheartened and disappointed in the owner's espousing the theory that the response around COVID is "over-reacting". And sharing Plandemic as science. And, most recently, a post on social media broadcasting that the advice to wear masks was a "conspiracy theory" was kind of the last straw for me. I am immunocompromised, and much of my motivation for going there was that I felt they aligned with my own health and wellness journey and philosophy...and that what they provided was useful to supporting my health and wellness. I am also a holistic nutritionist, and would send people there for their own wellness needs. All of this makes me so sad. And sadly, I will taking my business elsewhere. And won't be referring anyone any longer. read more

There's no where I know of quite the TLC. They have an amazing array of superfood goodness, a selection that trumps everything else out there. What's more impressive is the quality; everything they carry is the highest quality version of it, fresh, consciously sourced, and amazing! Add to this the wonderful vibe the staff bring and this place is primed to be a trend-setter. The only downside is price. It's not cheap, but part of that is because the items they carry tend to be pricey wherever you get them. The nice thing about TLC is you always get what you pay for; these are the freshest and most amazing ingreds you'll find anywhere. Oh, and don't even get me started on the in-house creations! Heath food and superfood nuts rejoice! This little shop may be small, but they are STOCKED full of health goodies ranging from dried fruits, superfood supplements, proteins, teas, mushrooms and everything in between! If you are into fermented foods, this is the place to go as they make everything in house in addition to their homemade chocolate and sweet treats. The staff are incredibly friendly and not only did they offer samples of one of their truffles, they even gave me a personal tour of their facility and chatted about the store when I told them it was my first time. I sipped on one of their 'Activate' elixirs from their 'elixir bar', which was absolutely HEAVENLY and I have been dreaming about it since and will return soon just for one of those drinks again. They also host many workshops and classes for those interested in making their own chocolate, crafting elixirs, or anything involved living a more positive and healthy lifestyle. Whether you are new or a veteran to the superfood scene, I highly recommend you check this place out, you will not be disappointed. I absolutely adore this store. They have so much product that is fresh and hard to find. Its a little on the pricey side but that's to be expected with the quality and rareness of their products. You really MUST try their raw cookies from the fridge, they are so yummy!! A vegan friend told me about this place and wow, I keep coming back for the cashew nut cheese. They make it onsite and my faves are the activated charcoal and the dilly beet. The flavour and texture is smooth like hummus and although a bit pricey, a little goes a long way! I have also tried their chocolates and all products are freshly sealed with a selection that is different than at community foods or planet organic. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful and they even offer classes to the public in their upstairs kitchen learning centre. read more

OH WOW! I always knew that The Light Cellar was the place to go to get superfoods in Calgary, always only the highest quality and fresh-packed. It's always bee my place to get important groceries like maca and matcha and moringa and all those kinds of superfoods, but WOW!! It has the most AMAZING Cafe now. We just had earth-shattering mushroom soup and ice cream (vegan or vegetarian, both available) and schizandra-rose hot chocolate... and of course, being surrounded by all those witches and wizards while being there... what an experience. Funny location, down in Bowness, but worth going. It's buried in a little building on Bowness Road right across from the Tao of Peace. WORTH GOING. I also totally wish that people needlessly suffering from so many ailments of modern society understood that the cures are THERE! And the people who work there are incredibly knowledgeable and skilled. read more

I adore The Light Cellar. This little nook situated on Bowness Road is equipped with all kinds of lovely raw food necessities (sans produce of course). It is the first and last place you will ever have to look for raw unpasteurized honeys, coconut sugars, raw nuts, tough to find ingredients in raw cooking such as irish moss, etc. They also teach some really rad classes, making such a lifestyle accessible and providing a sense of community. The raw chocolate is incredible. I have also dealt with these guys on a wholesale level and have received nothing but fairly priced ingredients for my vegan baking, and warmness. The owners and staff of The Light Cellar are incredibly friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. If you can catch these guys during their slightly unusual hours (which are still convenient for most as they fall on weekends anyways), do so. From knowledgeable, friendly staff to a range of Chinese herbs, teas, tinctures, fermented products, raw chocolate making ingredients and their elixir bar - this store has slowly and gently introduced superfoods into my life. The store has incredible selection and really provides hard to find ingredients and products. We visited there on our way back from Banff because I wanted to purchase their Root Beer mixture. Service was very poor, when I arrived there was group of staff and customers socializing completely ignoring me as I was browsing the store. At the point when I needed assistance, I went to the cashier table and waited there and still, nobody seemed to care to ask me if they could help. They clearly saw me waiting, and it was only when another gentleman gave a nudge to the staff mbr to go help me that he actually cared to look over and pay attention, and even then, the staff mbr continued without any apology or remark that gives me the impression that his poor service was a mistake. Based on my experience at local wholefood/organic type stores, this had the coldest atmosphere. I am very disappointed, not what I would expect from a store like this. read more

Quaint little shop in character neighbourhood of Bowness. Knowledgeable and informative staff. Easy going vibe w/a good array of Chinese & other Eastern herbs & medicines. The kombucha available on site is exceptionally well brewed and flavourful. I've been a customer since they started classes in a house in Montgomery. As a family of four we enjoy the raw food journey and learn from our experiences with a holistic lifestyle and meeting people who as excited as we are and due to the fact that the Light cellar was unique we made a point of coming into the city to shop there. Since they moved to the new store the atmosphere went from good to not-so-good. The staff seem put out and intimidating. Which is unfortunate because at one time they had some really great products. Every time we get hooked on a good product they either cancel it or can't order it in? This place has so much potential bit I can't see it growing due to the lack of enthusiasm the staff displays. The stock is inconsistent. The lights are dim and it's hard to read some of the labels. When I've asked for help the responses are indifferent at most. I really hope that the owners can get things turned around because the store has great potential but I just can't shop there any longer. :( read more
