I've never known myself to be quite so excited about a river walk; but there's something so magical about that stretch of crisp path from behind the War Memorial in Islandbridge threading down to St. Laurence Road in Chapelizod... I'd call it transporting, but then you'd think I'm taking the mick.
This atmospheric length of trail nestles so close to the Liffey less than vigilant walkers are likely to be splashed by leashless dogs launching themselves into the water. The usual crowd of local runners, cyclists and hard walkers make the most of our long summer days here. Living nearby makes it easy to fit an early morning walk just as the day's warming up, then come back in the evening for a stroll in the sunset to watch the local rowing crews.
Heaven.
Development ambitions were high when the path was laid down a few years ago. According to the dated DCC website plans had been made for a mini golf course and small bridge to be built by 2008. While the slip for that bridge is ready and waiting, any work on those projects seem long forgotten.
But that can be a good thing. Now that the city has forgotten largely about tarting up this beautiful nook behind the Chapelizod Bypass, nature can take its course unabated (think plush grasses, vibrant field flowers and a wild population of birds and small furry Disney characters). read more
