My teenager originally saw Dr. Kowal for attention deficit issues in January 2024. Through the EEG scan, there were other findings that actually explained some other challenges he was having such as executive functioning skills, anxiety, etc. We committed to going twice a week through the neurofeedback cycles. He just graduated in May of 2025. He (and us) are thrilled with the results! He's thriving academically and socially. I just want to say that Going to Dr. Kowal in 2013 was the best we could have ever done for our daughter. Before going to him my daughter could not function a full day in school. She would have multiple anxiety attacks daily. She also suffered with Depression during that time. After going through nuerofeedback with Dr Kowal she was able to not only go to college but end up on the presidents and deans list. My experience at Life Worth Living (LWL) was more of a 5 part journey that I will break into a short and long version. LWL does biofeedback, EMDR, EEGs, etc. SHORT VERSION: it took 3 highly expensive visits to finally achieve an EEG (unorganized scheduling), then 2 weeks to hound both the psychologist and the director of the center to send my results, another week to receive the written (incorrect) report, and then was double billed for services already paid for. Overall: an experience that began solid, but ended up causing more stress than good. VISITS - Far too many. Felt like a stretched way to bill insurance additionally. DR. KOWAL - Impressively knowledgeable. Kind and focused (one-on-one). Completely unorganized and stretched in too many directions to make you a priority. Unresponsive to emails/calls. EEG CENTER- LCPC had a dry personality, but remained flexible and knowledgeable. SW/Tech (self-admitting) had no idea what she was doing, what the mapping was used for, but was enjoyable to talk to outside of what the center specializes in. These are supposedly the same people that give EMDR, which I would never ever trust. I couldn't imagine having these people manage something as intimate and precarious as EMDR after struggles with scheduling/knowing what a specific brain map is. THERAPY CENTER - The building/office itself is a welcoming environment and truly peaceful. **The visits with Dr. Kowal and the EEG/biofeedback itself are in two separate locations. REPORTS/RESULTS - Insultingly obvious copy-and-paste job. Partially incorrect. Several weeks late. Only received reports because I emailed/called consistently and finally requested the help of the center's director. Results were another waiting game. BILLING - Billed twice for some services. Received multiple bills, all stating different things. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Account of events: First call with Dr. Kowal very thorough and gave me high hopes about the process in general. It wasn't until the second visit that I began to severely doubt the process. 1st Visit: necessary and went over family history, expectations of what insurance covers, etc. Extremely informative and Dr. Kowal was warm, Seemingly attentive, excited about his job, and self-disclosed enough to build a comfortable rapport. Just when you get used to Dr. Kowal though, you're tossed to lower level professionals that have a sub par bedside and background. 2nd Visit: (felt overdone) included questionnaires, memory tests, etc. Although this info is important to capture the entire picture of an individual, hardly ANY of it was used for my final report. The report also incorrectly detailed my family history that we spent a chunk of billable time to discuss. 3rd Visit: Dr. Kowal set the time and date in his phone for the EEG, and I was scheduled. Or so I thought.... My appt. was at 12:30, I arrived at 12:20. There was a mom/son sharing the waiting room with me. Despite our several taps on the front desk bell and hearing people chatting, no one waltzed to the desk until 12:50 when the mom began yelling,"Hello?!" When the LCPC finally appeared, she didn't have the mom/son in her scheduling. Mom/son put up a confused protest, rescheduled, but mistakes happen, right? Wrong. Finally, at 1:10, the LCPC asked me if I wanted to make an appointment, to which I responded,"I'm actually here for a 12:30 appointment." She looked at the computer and the same song and dance occurs: "Oh, you're not on our schedule. Dr. Kowal must not have synced his appointment book with ours again! I don't know if we have room for you right now." I had to explain that I drove here 45 minutes from the city (for the 3rd time) for this appointment and needed to be seen. Like, 40 minutes ago. She suddenly had time and took me in. This happened w/ 2 of my visits here! The EEG itself was painless and relatively quick. LCPC ended up being nice about everything. 4th Visit: Dr. Kowal going over the results. He wrote tons of exciting notes all over the EEG pages themselves about what everything meant....then kept them for himself. If I wanted a hard copy of the EEGs themselves, I'd have to pay upwards of $40 for them. He offered to email them-but this took weeks of reminding. This session itself was fascinating and he spent a good hour reviewing everything, but if you don't take notes or have a steal trap memory then it's a bust. I appreciated him answering my questions and making me feel involved in understanding what was in front of us. He also showed compassion for my brain activity. I drove an hour round-trip to LWL a total of 5 times because I wanted to keep believing that the process would smooth out, but it never did. It was just too difficult, expensive, and unorganized to continue working with. I let this rating stew for nearly 3 months to insure its accuracy, and it's still a 2. I'd consider other options for biofeedback, etc in the future. read more

I've read the other reviews for this practitioner. Although we too experienced billing and scheduling issues, the misunderstandings and frustrations were well worth the recovery my son experienced from this extremely knowledgeable clinician. When services are high in demand, scheduling and billing sometimes can become problematic. Through extensive treatment the results were phenomenal! My son is not recognizable who he is today compared to who he was when he walked in the door initially. For example, he had an articulation impairment that was remediated via neurofeedback when the school had never even delivered services toward remediation for the impairment they documented. This is just one of many other issues that the neurofeedback and Dr Kowal improved for my son. He is now a contributing member of society and not someone society will need to carry due to the disabilities he had. Kowal hung in there with us when the schools and other clinicians gave up. His fortitude made the difference in my son's quality of life. Today he truly has a "life worth living" read more

My experience with Life Worth Living and Dr. Kowal was very positive. I brought my daughter in for poosibly a concussion and some anxiety issues. We had the EEG test done and sat down a few days later with Dr Kowal for the results. I was so impressed with the spot on knowledge he shared with us regarding my daughters condition and behaviors. A couple of years ago my son was having incapacitating headaches to the point that he couldn't drive. So at 21 years of age he had to make a change in colleges and I had to drive him to work and school. We tried many places and the normal migrane headache drugs didn't help and he was getting worse and worse. A Neurologist suggested bio-feedback and so I googled my area to see what I could find. Well we thankfully found Dr. Kowal at Life Worth Living. He mapped my sons brain and found out that for some reason part of his brain wasn't even working and the frontal lobe was so filled with random patterns that it was a surprise he could even function at work and school. He started neuro-feedback with Dr. Kowal (who is so understanding and calming) and did the treatment each week for about a year, tapering off the longer he went. Every 6 weeks or so they would map his brain waves again and see that things were progressing in the right direction. The brain can be a difficult thing and what helps one person may not help another in the same way. But thankfully we found Dr. Kowal, if we didn't I don't know what he would have done, his headaches were completely messing up his life. Now he is back to his usual self. I will admit that we had a little problem getting the first initial appointment going, and a little problem with insurance which involved getting the ok for continuous treatment. Would have given them a 5 if this were not the case. Also a headache problem is treated easier with insurance than a mental health problem, and it helps to know that going in. We were lucky to have this be a headache and so our insurance covered almost everything. I have similar problems at other medical offices too. Dr. James Kowal and the wonderful group of Neurotherapy Techs have helped turn my sons life around. He suffers with ADD, Learning disabilities, OCD, Tourette's, anger issues, anxiety and depression. Dr Kowal has got to be the most narcissistic human being I have ever met. The office manager (his girlfriend I was told) was unprofessional and scatterbrained. The neurofeedback technician was cold, controlling and not interested in me at all. It was difficult to get anyone to call me for the initial session. Once I did get in Dr. Kowal left me waiting in the waiting room for an hour and a half. The receptionist apparently works for someone else and is told not to speak to LWL clients. Once I got in the Dr kept looking at his phone, talked about himself incessantly, put the hard sell on for me to buy ionized water and oils for hundreds of dollars then talked me into a QEEG for an outlandish sum. He didn't explain the results very well or seem to remember me at all at the next session. The Neurofeedback therapist also left me waiting for 45 minutes and wore a mask. I felt like I was just a number or should I say an insurance number since I did 20 minutes of neurofeedback and they charged me twice for the same hour long "counseling" session. I would and have gone elsewhere. This group seems to be strictly a money making endeavor. No one seemed to care at all about the patients or their recovery. read more

After suffering from an anxiety disorder for 31 years, which limited me in my life, Dr Kowal had me fill out test paperwork and we tried tapping, which I was quite proficient in and not having good results we did one session of EMDR. I can't tell you how thrilled I was the next morning when leaving the house I didn't experience any anxiety, I actually couldn't believe it and thought it was just a fluke. It's been two weeks and let me tell you, it's gone! Dr Kowal is compassionate and extremely knowledgeable (take it from someone who has been everywhere for help, including EMDR with another practitioner) and I would rate him higher than this if I could! After my first amazing week I went back to Dr Kowal thinking I would have to continue with him for further sessions, and to my surprise he said no, that we had changed the neuro pathway and I would be just fine!
