Great facilities, but the "Sales-First" culture is exhausting. While Life Time Fitness is clean and offers a great variety of classes (popular ones fill up very quickly), the daily experience is marred by several significant issues that make it hard to recommend at this price point. The Parking Nightmare The 5-story garage is a disaster. The first three floors are mostly reserved for valet, leaving everyone else to circle the bottom two floors. The spots and turns are dangerously narrow; even with a mid-size sedan, you're constantly at risk of scraping your car against pillars or rails. Constant Upselling & "Hustle" Culture The "luxury" vibe is frequently ruined by promotional announcements over the PA system. Even booking a high-quality massage comes with an exhausting sales pitch both before and after the session. Most recently, I tried a "complimentary" training session. I was incredibly explicit during scheduling: I only wanted the one free session and a simple list of the exercises we covered for my own reference. Despite being assured this was doable, the trainer withheld the list at the end, stating I'd only receive it if I signed a paid contract for more sessions. It is insulting to have clear boundaries ignored. This relentless "hustle" and sales-pitch culture is fundamentally at odds with a true wellness environment. Deafening Class Volume The music in many studio classes is set to an uncomfortable, near-painful level. Instructors have refused requests to lower the volume, or even turned it up in response. While earplugs are provided, you shouldn't need hearing protection to attend a gym class. Alpha Space Equipment On a positive note, I did notice recently that management addressed a previous shortage of 20lb and 25lb barbells in the Alpha space. It's good to see they are capable of making functional improvements when members speak up. The Bottom Line The facilities are well-maintained and the class variety is excellent, but the stress of parking, the "disco-level" volume, and being treated as a "lead" first and a member second make every visit an exercise in frustration. THE GOOD I'm a classes girl, and, for me. the classes can't be beat. I also gravitate to women teachers. . A lot of variety so I can get in my cardio and weights in. Yoga is a must for me and their is variety in the classes and the teachers are amazing. The hot studio has infrared heat. All of this has made me become a consistent yoga practicer and it has helped my physical and mental health. The other staff throughout the gym are hard working and kind. I like the place and average 3 x week. THE ANNOYING People complain of overcrowding, but the people who sign up with intention and don't cancel in a timely way like me aren't the problem. Most classes have 3 or 4 people who come in 10 -20 minutes late without reservations. There are also popular classes that people sign up for right when they can, and then cancel. I have gotten into classes when I am #20 on the waitlist 2 hours before the class. THE UGLY Three stars because of dealings with corporate. I started at a "fixed rate" of $219.00. Dues have been raised twice in two years to $259.00. Gym staff were sympathetic but their hands were tied due to corporate. Corporate was completely non-responsive. The best I got was an internet chat that was quite possible AI. Life Time's slogan is: A Healthy Way of Life. It's more like: A Wealthy Way of Life. I'm just a teacher on a teacher's salary. Steer clear of lifetime fitness. Since I've become a member at Lifetime my membership dues have been consistently increasing almost every year but the experience and service has become more and more lackluster and disappointing. Hours have gotten shorter, finding a properly working cardio machine is a gamble, towel racks are empty more often than not, sanitizing wipes are empty half the time, the gym is generally over crowded even during off peak hours, parking is always chaotic, the suana area (steam, dry, hot tub, cold plunge) is always closed for cleaning or improvement but everything looks exactly the same after reopening minus the dry sauna, the showers have low pressure or the condiment containers do not work, the steam room floor is like walking on mud it is so dirty, finding an empty locker is like a scavenger hunt. They keep sending this generic email every year that goes along the lines of "As part of our ongoing commitment to a premium membership experience" as a reason for increasing my monthly dues but it is in fact the complete opposite. I've been a member at plenty of other gyms and have seen their downfall due to their lack of maintenance, care, and general overall lack of reinvestment into the gym itself. Lifetime fitness is no different from any of them, it's just there to squeeze every dollar from it's members while providing the minimum service. Do yourself a favor and just go to a regular gym and pay normal rates. Because this premium membership experience for a premium price isn't it. read more

Not for me. I am a mom with young babies. I've been planning to finally get to the gym and my husband has insisted that I ignore their exuberant cost and treat myself. It's been nearly impossible for me to get out of the house and make it here. I finally did it for the tour and was late -- just using their parking garage took 15 extra minutes and reminded me of a crowded mall. Anyhow. I finally make it there and was hoping they'd understand my situation and welcome me in -- given how hard it is for new moms to finally find time and get out. There was a 20-something receptionist that said they couldn't accommodate me (all I needed was someone to give me membership details for 5-10 mins and try the place before joining with a full family membership). She said the earliest someone could talk to me was at 4pm -- 7 hours later. Flexibility and accommodating my needs is why I'm willing to pay so much money. So a total disregard for my lifestyle at the very start --during a sales pitch -- is not a good sign. The whole mall-like ambiance, corporate bureaucracy, lack of flexibility, giant garage labyrinth of parking -- all are the opposites of what I normally like. To whom it may concern: I have been a member of lifetime chestnut hill over 10 years. During the first 8 years this was the best gym in MA. Two years ago, things started to get worse. Your management team in Chestnuthill cannot handle the easiest requests such as to send the updates if the spa area is closed for some reasons, or the showers are off or the steam or sauna is not working properly. Last year a man started to come in the only woman's locker room and we were told that he is in transition but the problem is that Lifetime Chestnut hill has only one locker room for women and children. This man has man's private parts. A group of moms have complained about our privacy and safety and Chestnuthill management did not even respond to that. Yesterday, a woman came with the huge dog to the women's Locker room it was Nora service dog, because there was no vest and no paperwork on it. And the dog has started sniffing, barking and leaking towels. There was a senior who is allergic to dogs. Also, another member expressed the concern about it to the manager Natalie, and she just does not care. It is a health concern for us and allergies since the women's locker room is the only room for everyone to share, and none of us want to take a shower after the dog hair or saliva. Unfortunately I don't recommend this gym especially if you're a minority. I did not have a pleasant experience as an Afro Hispanic American. Mostly my complaint was for the personal training department . (Also the uncleanliness of the gym especially the women's locker room . ) When I complained , I was told to go to a neighborhood gym in my area . I actually live and own property in the same town the gym is in . The personal trainer Manager a thin Caucasian doesn't like to hear any discrepancies . But the personal trainer's here are not good and just are rude and don't know how to talk professionally in general. The lack of emotional intelligence, compassion, and empathy is evident. I had to hire a minority friendly personal trainer outside of the gym. So anyhow I find Equinox in the chestnut hill area is more minority friendly. Plus it costs about the same . Also if you ever complain bring someone with you . Since all the employees ( mostly all ) stick together to save their jobs which is the most important thing . Tried to check out the gym to see what's changed before restarting my membership. I was literally going to rejoin but they need me to pay to tour first. They won't let me in unless I pay $75 for a day pass!!! They obviously don't need any more business so don't give them any. The gym itself is definitely clean and fancy. It is smaller than I expected for how much space there is in that building. The group classes are great and there are a ton of options included with your membership. The spa was also nice when I went bath times. The smoothies are good and the cafe has ample space to eat, work or relax. There is a huge parking garage so plenty of parking, but parking is tight. The hot water seems to only work about half the time- which can make showering there annoying. Additionally, I wish the air conditioning/ventilation was better. I visited the gym 10 days ago as a guest. I asked them if I can join for one month only because I will be on vacation. They told me yes. Today I went to start and they didn't accept me because they said there is a one month waiting list!!!!! Wow in ten days!!!! I honestly don't believe them. I have been a member at Chestnut Hill location for years, and I noticed things started going downhill in the past 1-1.5 years. They have really good trainers for barre and Zumba classes, and classes with great trainers fill up pretty fast. Instead of increasing the number of classes, they decided to increase capacity of each class - that are so packed now, that it is hard to move without touching your neighbors. And definitely forget about personal space... In addition, duration of some of the classes was reduced from 60 min to 45 min. Overall, the quality is declining over the recent year - classes get shorter and more crowded. read more

I'm just gonna come out and say it this gym is horribly ran there's never any towels in the men's room and I almost waited 1 hour just to get my locker open I rarely see anyone in there working the management needs an upgrade. I got yelled at and almost had to fight and teach one of the mangers a lesson. Big light skin dude yelled at me to leave when it was only 2 minutes past close. I know I was wrong but for him to yell and get into my face I could've seriously hurt that dude but he should not be in a position of power talking to customers like that. read more

Place is really nice and decently clean. Not the biggest of the lifetimes. I signed up for this gym cause it had great hours of 4-12am but now they close earlier especially on weekends. I also dont think they losten to their customers much. As this Im not the first to complain of this person: And their is one employee who is extremely aggressive on near close time so he can go home. To the point hes screaming at people in the lockeroom and turning off the lights on people during their showers, which is a big liability. Maybe he should find a different job and stop crying everyday if he wants to get home earlier. Literally if youre walking out at 11:01 he is yelling. Be very careful with the contracts if you sign up for personal training. This place will literally take your money via credit card without your permission and you will have to argue with them to get it back and that's even if they do give it back. Lifetime in Chestnut Hill is a fabulous facility. What separates this gym from many others is its fantastic training staff. From my observation, their trainers are all very good. Alex Chery, one of Lifetime's Personal Trainers stands out as a superstar. He has worked with me pre Covid and as recent as 3 weeks ago. Alex cares about each client and is a great listener. He listened to my goals, advised me on diet, hydration sleep needs, stress reduction techniques and exercises geared to me . He further set me up with an exercise plan including specific classes offered at Lifetime. He suggested an Alpha Strength class that he teaches. As an unmuscular 67 year old, such a class is way out of my comfort zone but I was willing to try it. It turned out to be incredible and while a very popular class, Alex manages to bop around and help each individual - he stresses proper form and pushing each individual to push ourselves (within reason). In a short amount of time, I am seeing positive results. I highly recommend this club and especially Alex. read more

I'm in from California and have worked out in a multitude of fitness centers in the last 25 years. This fitness spa center has it all! From free weights, machines, a unique variety of group classes, nutritious cafe, sauna, steam, massage, facials , relaxation lounges, full bar 4pm-9pm- need I go on.... Come in and de-stress for 45 min to a couple of hours. Plenty of room to relax and lounge whether solo or with a few of your besties. Took a HipHop dance class tonight w/ an awesome instructor- David Stamps- high energy, fun, & engaging. Can't wait for the next class. Check this place out-you'll be hooked. This review applies mainly to the main club area (cardio, weights) and the facilities. I don't have as much experience with the actual classes so my wife will comment on that aspect. Things to note about this place: 1) It's not cheap. Not by a long shot. HOWEVER, if it's something that you can swing in your budget there is definitely perks to be had. The Chestnut Hill location is more expensive than the surrounding Lifetime's in MA since it's newer. If you get a membership at the other locations then you can still use any of those places BUT you won't be able to use the Chestnut Hill location (it requires Diamond status or something). HOWEVER. If you and a SO signs up together then it brings the price down a bit in total as the partner receives membership at 50% off. Our total price for the both of us is about $270 (which again is expensive). From personal experience I've had memberships in numerous gyms in the past (BU fitrec when I was a student, YMCAs and BSC). While those locations are definitely MUCH cheaper than Lifetime, I find them to also be a lot more crowded and not as well maintained. I'm a bit icked out by showers and bathrooms at gyms in general but Lifetime actually is a place I don't have any issues showering in as everything is modern and well maintained (in my experience). 2) The more you utilize the club then the more value you can get. While they have classes that you still have to pay for, they also have numerous classes that are free to members. I've only attended the cycling classes (which kicked my ass) but my wife has tried their yoga and high intensity workout classes which she enjoys. Also while this location doesn't have a pool, it has a sauna, hot tub still and you can always visit other Lifetime locations that have a pool (not ideal but it is what it is). 3) Nationwide membership is nice if you travel to other major cities. We've been in a few Lifetime locations in other states and its nice to have a gym you can go to if you don't fancy the hotel gyms (if you have a gym at all). Now there is a sales pitch when you first sign up (we were able to get the membership fee waived but your mileage may vary). When you take the complimentary sessions they will push for continued paid sessions (which are definitely NOT cheap and was not something I could afford on top of the membership) BUT again, if you have the budget for it I see that the trainers are highly invested when I see them training others. They also have a child care area (I think it was 1 hour free but I don't know much more than that). Overall, while it's definitely not a gym for everyone, if its something you can afford then definitely give it a try. read more

I'm a current member, but will probably end up cancelling, and definitely wouldn't recommend it. The equipment is decent, but there are insufficient amounts of key equipment like squat racks and benches, and machines are often inoperative and in need of repair. The steam room and adjacent areas are seemingly constantly under repair and unavailable. But the weirdest negative thing is the staff; I don't have some sort of Karen-esque expectation of positive interactions just because it's an expensive gym, but the repeatedly and weirdly rude interactions I've had during normal interactions with the staff are enough to make me not want to come here. Like, worse than I've seen in any of the many gyms I've gone to in the last 20 years, and almost antagonistic at a few times. I can't wrap my head around why they're so rude, or why they seem to have such negative feelings towards members that are just trying to do normal operations. When I called them, Jonathan, a manager, said there is nothing they could do and also will charge me for one extra month. Gym is great, I like it for the most part. But there are things i do not like about it for the money we all pay. The fact that the gym went from the perfect hours 4am-12am now closing at 10pm on weekends 11pm Mon-Thur. It really sucks. And then you have that one staff member at the Chestnut Hill location, when it's like 10:50pm he's rushing everyone in the locker room and has a really nasty attitude like he owns the place probably, maybe idk. I definitely will try and find out his name and come back here for sure. But this place definitely used to be my gym though when they had the perfect hours. It used to be my fav club until they changed the employees and the culture of the gym. In general, lifetime reduced the open hours for 1 hour. It sucks but it's still the best hours around Boston. Tonight when I finishing up my workout, it just hits the closing hour. I started my last set and it'll b finishing in 1 min. The girl came to me trying to stop me doing the last set. I saw her stopping other guys for the last set as well with a bad attitude. That pissed me off and I ended up doing my set regardless she's staring at me on the side until I'm done with the set. When I was about to leave, she asked me my name and she said she will revoke my membership. Excuse me??? Who are you??? Who gives you the qualification to treat a customer like that. I've been to all the life time around Boston and I've been a loyal customer here for years. I've never been treated like this even in any other less pricy gym not to mention any other life time. At the end of day, I don't care if she's entitled to revoke my membership. If that happens, I'll be escalating this issue to life time head quarter and I'll go as far as I can. I love life time brand in general and I'm not allowing a garbage employee like her ruin my fav brand. read more

The club got new Octane fitness ellipticals and no one could explain to me why there were new models, with a few that had not been programmed well. Turns out Octane is discontinuing a really great model. Okay, I'll try another elliptical. Thankfully they have TechnoGym ellipticals and stair climbers that are good. Point is: Let your staff know about new equipment and program the new equipment correctly. LifeTime needs to get the team training off of the main floor. People are entitled to work out without the loud music and instructors barking at people. I plan my workouts around not being there during these training sessions, but I shouldn't have to. It's cheaper than Equinox and cleaner than BSC, so here I am. read more

I only give one star because despite loving the Burlington and North shore locations. I am honestly pretty disappointed with Chestnut Hill. My husband and his friend were raving about how nice the sauna, steam room, hot tub, cold water immersion pool set up were at the location. To the point that despite us living an hour away I agree to go check it out too. Only to find out the woman's lockeroom had a smaller sauna and no cold water immersion pool. I honestly find this pretty sexist and offensive. I am glad the other locations did things right. I joined this club two weeks ago, and the place is super amazing( clean, nicely maintained) and the staff is super friendly. I really enjoyed my time working out here, and it's not overcrowded. I would also like to give a shoutout for my personal trainer Nate, he has been more than wonderful on helping me get back in shape after quarantine. And there are things are cost extra like personal training sessions but they would tell you beforehand and you can ask for the pricing for each services they provide. By joining Chestnut Hill LTA- I am able to go to any LTA location around the country. This is a huge win since Westwood and Metrowest both have outdoor pools and all the amenities! In addition to the endless cardio equipment, a jungle gym of TCX, battle ropes, free weights and all of the weight machines- LTA offers a wide variety of classes with all sorts of instructors. They have HIIT classes, TCX classes, Strength classes, Yoga, Barre, Pilates (mat), Cycling (three different styles), Zumba, Dance Jam and more all of which is included in your membership! For additional costs they offer revolver Pilates (which is incredible!), and TEAM trainings (BURN, CUT, BOOTCAMP & ALPHA) all of which are motivating and meet multiple times a week as well as personal training! Beyond the "gym" needs they offer nutritional support, medical support, and physical therapy. There is a full salon and spa, as well as a cafe and bar! The beauty of the locker rooms feature saunas, steam rooms, jacuzzis and a lounge area for relaxation! There are showers with everything you could need! I think I spend more time at LTA then I do at my own apartment!! If you go to the gym regularly, and find benefit in changing up routine between "doing your own thing" and taking classes- this is the perfect place for you! read more

Love this place. Love. [I do not work there and I am not affiliated with Life Time Athletic (LTA) in any way besides being a member.] I joined in May 2017 at the Chestnut Hill location and also use the Westwood facility since they have an outdoor pool. LTA has a variety of classes and instructors. Sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and showers with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, mouthwash, razors and shave cream. And towels. This "gym" is so much more than a gym. They have a café (prepared and to-order hot and cold dishes (but ask for the sauces and dressings on the side bc the staff applies a lot!) and full-service spa on premises. One does not have to be a member to use the spa or eat at the cafe. And the CH location has a bar, though I believe the staffing of it is irregular... Not sure. There is ample underground parking. But let's talk about the important stuff...why we actually go to a gym. Classes include spin, 'soul cycle', total-body conditioning, high-intensity (HIIT) classes, barre, yoga, hot yoga, bag-less kickboxing with weighted gloves, and more. They have a variety of state-of-the-art cardio and 'Nautilus' equipment, plus a TRX station, heavy ropes, cubes, weighted 'tires', and more. Two types of treadmills. Plenty of open space rondo your own thing. For those with kids under 12, Life Time also has a kids "academy" where you can bring your young children while you enjoy the gym, and they are open until 7pm. The gym allows teens on the gym floor and in classes. Joining the Chestnut Hill Club means you have access to any other club across the US. Locally there is Westwood, Natick, and Burlington, all with indoor and outdoor pools (open the summer months). For the first time, I look forward to going to the gym. The only downside (besides the café food not being as healthy as I thought bc of the sauces they apply) is the cost. It is expensive, no doubt. I have heard it costs the same as Equinox ($169/month), but to me is a much nicer facility. Couples get a discount, and it is something like $80 to add a family member to membership, then cost lowers with each person until it is about $50 for each extra person. If you use the gym 3x/week or more AND use the showers/sauna/jacuzzi/steam room, I feel it is definitely worth the expense if you can afford it. read more

They literally robbed me of $178 as I tried to cancel my membership and they still changed me and wouldnt do anything about it. Hadnt stepped foot in the gym for 6 months and they still charged me. They are pretentious and just awful with customer service. A mistake like this should be able to be fixed when it can be proven I hadnt stepped foot in the gym. THeyre prices are so absurd so dont know why they had to stoop low to steal a month out of me when I hadnt been in months. We joined lifetime this month and absolutely love it. This is a brand new facility, built from scratch and is only 2 months old. I love their laid back attitude, always greeted with a warm smile. I'm no gym whizz.. I only come to plop on the machine for about 30-45 minutes, go bake off some blubber in the sauna or steam room, shower, and go home. My initial concern was that there is no pool at this location as I have a 4 year old and wanted to sign him up for lessons and definitely want access to the pool in the summer! But I am actually GLAD there is no pool because it's definitely calmer and gives off a different vibe. Best thing about this location is that it's a diamond premier location, which means you can go to the Westwood/Framingham (diamond locations) location but the members cannot come to your location (unless you pay more, I think?). Essentially, you're allowed to go to many others, with the exception of the Manhanttan one (because that gym is like $800 a month). We pay more but not that much more. Some people complain about the cost but it is totally worth it. Each day you're allowed to have up to 3 hours of childcare. Even if we only come 5 times a month @ 2 hours each time, I break even with the childcare costs. Best part is, my son ABSOLUTELY loves Kiddie Academy. There are always plenty of staff on hand and I love all of the classes they offer. "Can we go to Lifetime?" is often one of the first things out of my son's mouth each morning. The facilities are amazing, the spa is on point (I've tried the pedicure and plan on using more services), and did I mention there is quality childcare on site that my son loves?
