I really enjoy when various groups around Indy get together and come up with a way to add color and unexpected art to what may otherwise have been a "rundown" area like an underpass where cars travel under elevated train tracks or another highway. They clean out the trash and commission an artist to create something more inviting and more hopeful for the neighborhood. Such was the case in 2020 when the underpass for the railroad that crossed English Avenue between Rural and Sherman got a tremendous make over. It was cleaned, some repair work was done and local artist Kristopher May did large murals on both sides of English. The mural uses silhouetted figures depicted in activities that fit the neighborhoods surrounding the area. Biking and hiking, soccer and other activities make the place seem more family friendly than just leaving the underpass dark and unattended. I have added a link to the Arts Council of Indianapolis if you want more information about the behind the scenes organizations or the artist.
Note that the blue ribbon of color that unifies the mural on both sides of the street represents the Pleasant Run creek that runs through the neighborhood.
Fyi, if you are in the area and want to take a look, my wife found some parking at one of the local businesses (southwest of the mural) that allowed me to get very close to the mural without having to risk parking on the street and oncoming traffic. This is a very nice addition to the neighborhood!
