This is a very interesting mural by Matthew Aaron that is painted on the side of the Alley Cat lounge in an Alley (no pun intended). It depicts red sticks of dynamite with two black bands, one each end and a squiggly fuse coming from it. They are sticks of different sizes, with a large one featured in the center. That is all set against an aqua background. Dynamite is Aaron's signature figure and appears in most of his murals and paintings. He does not condone the use of dynamite, he just likes the figure.
On a side note, every time I see his work, I think of Jimmy "JJ" Walker from Good Times saying "DYNOMITE!!". I bet you can't get that out of your head now either.
In front of the large stick of dynamite is the basic instructions for use, 1. Light fuse, 2. Run away. Seems pretty easy to me. On a door that is located on the wall that the mural is on reads "Beer, Wine, Vodka, Dynamite, and Whiskey".
The mural is a basic design. I do like the shading and detail on the sticks of dynamite though. I also like the way that the background contrasts with the sticks. There is a similar, but much smaller version of this located in Graffiti Alley 2.0 in Fountain Square.
This mural is in bad shape and appears to be on its last leg. It is deteriorating fast and is starting to peel and chip off, especially at the bottom. It is in desperate need of repair.
There is metered street parking right across from the alley that the mural is located and within a short walk. Or you can just pull into the alley that the mural is overlooks and park there to get a closer look.
As with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful murals in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. There are tons of murals in the alley and adjacent alleys to check out. read more
