This mural was painted in 2020 by Karl Leck. It is located on the Michigan Street overpass. It replaced a previous mural that he had painted on the site, titled, White River Aquaculture Preservation Aquarium, that was destroyed by damage and severe discoloration. The original mural was painted in 2011 as part of the Arts Council of Indianapolis' 46 for XLVI mural Initiative Program.
It is in nice condition and is a very simple design. It is basically the silhouette outline of fish on a multi-colored stripped background. The artist intended the background to replicate the natural process of sediment staining from overhead runoff that is experienced by mostly all the murals under the overpasses at one point or another. His hope is that it will mask future discoloration or delay it, at a minimum.
I agree with Ken N's review somewhat. This mural is not eye catching or jumps out and grabs you. This is a simple design, and surprisingly it still works for me. I can feel Leck's frustration of having to redo work that he had previously done and poured his heart into. This mural is a testament to that and him saying I will try to avoid it from happening again, or at least prolong the mural life. I also like the colorful lines that are in the background
Anyway, there is tons of metered street parking available near the entrance to the canal where the mural is located, so you can get out and take a look. Just be sure to make sure you are on the right side of the canal you want to be on. Whether it is the side the mural is on, or across from it, to give you more of an overhead view. There are also a few garages within a reasonable walking distance too. Obviously, this is not a mural that you can do a drive by on, so that is not an option. You have to hoof it.
As with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful murals in the area, There are a ton of them under the over passes along the canal, to maximize your time and trip. read more
