Saint Anne's Cathedral is the centerpiece of Belfast's Cathedral Quarter. Construction began in…read more1899 and that initial design was complete and consecrated in 1904. It has undergone a number of extensions and expansions throughout the ages. One of those improvements is the 40 meter tall stainless steel "Spire of Hope" that was installed in 2007. (Derivative of the spire in Dublin, hmmm?) The cathedral is quite active with services held pretty much every day. I walk past this oddly placed church every day I'm working in the paper and I did actually call in…read morea while back simply to admire the architecture (some of Belfast's churches beggar belief) I'm not a religious man to say the least but the one positive thing it has brought into our lives is fantastically beautiful art and perfectly formed buildings. Inside this little church is pretty much typical of many around the city - the usual religious iconography, wooden bench seating and marble fittings. Admittedly not as impressive as the huge St Annes Cathedral on down the road a bit but still.

That said, I've established before that my middle name is indecisive, so I'm sure you're not surprised. Love it or loathe it, you have to admit that the Tabernacle is totally breathtaking, and for me, it was incredibly overwhelming... Imagine five dozy teens jammed into the one car, speeding up the motorway, desperately trying to find the turnoff a mere five minutes before the church service begins. [And blast...we missed it.] Cue elaborate plan to somehow get us all back on track towards our destination. The now sweaty, agitated teens manage to somehow evaluate the situation agreeably, and eventually land in the church car park, fifteen minutes late. All of a fluster, the five teens leap out of the car and make a mad dash for the church building. (To say that the Tabernacle is humongous is really an understatement. I've never seen anything quite like it.) People are still rapidly coming in in their droves - unequivocal mayhem. Front foyer is incredible, and the massive gold fountain in the front foyer is really far too elaborate, representing the extent of the church's extravagant ornateness. Welcomed by a series of ushers, the five teens are quickly introduced to their seats on the balcony, staring in awe at the numerous people around them and on the floor below. The choir is magnificent; the band play well; the preacher is all 'hell, fire and damnation', and exceedingly scary; communion is passed around in an elaborate bowl and cup holder, and the service is over. That's honestly how it felt, so overwhelmed was I by the whole experience. The visit was not a negative one, but I am absolutely certain I could not attend Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle every week. It is far too extensive and formidable for my liking. Beautiful church though, and an experience that I didn't forget in a hurry, and one you should try.

So when I visited in August 2016, the facade was under construction so you could only just make out…read morethe glimpses of the gorgeous statuary underneath. It's a lovely warm stone and the church looks very intimate from the outside but when you go in, it's pretty big but it still feels like a warm embrace. The church is truly a masterpiece of gothic revival architecture, so glad it's being restored. My sole purpose for visiting here was to check out the €1 million triptych painting donated Sir John Lavery called "Madonna of the Lakes" to this church as he was baptized here. Our guide told us that the painting had been damaged in a fire during the Belfast Blitz, but since then it's been restored beautifully. This model for this painting was Lavery's wife and she's rumored to have had an affair with Michael Collins, so history once again comes full circle. Best of all, it's still free to visit this church so step in and check out this lovely luminous paintings and also get a wee bit of a rest (caveat - can only do this if a mass is not happening)! Went there this am to their 10.30am service. It didn't start at that time. Hence the ratings of 4…read morestars. I have a major issue with stuff not starting in time. The church have only recently started meeting here. There have been on the go for ages but have not owned a building until now. And they have only started meeting in the morning instead of evening. People where welcoming and there was coffee at the door. Ethically sourced good quality stuff. It's an old buildings with a more modern stamp. Nice touch to have a birds eye view of Belfast projected onto the wall. The image and graphics etc are modern and fresh. The style of the service etc is more old school. It's a strange mix. The worship is a good length. The talk was about half an hour. People where friendly and came over to talk to me.

My daughter also married there in 2017 so it holds wonderful memories for my husband and me. Everything Emma, the previous reviewer, said is true and I hope to visit soon to sit and reflect on the past 50 years which started there that day 1st day of July 1971. The prettiest little church you've ever seen. Built in the 1920s, this church has seen many a…read morechristening, wedding and funeral. The cycle of many residents of North Belfast's lives are viewed through the eyes of this church. And it's lovely. Whether you are religious or not, you can't help but be charmed by its simplicity. It's not as ornate as other Catholic churches usually are, letting its beautiful stained glass windows have their intended effect, and it has a fairly plain, but fresh and pretty altar area at the far end. I was lucky enough to have my wedding in this church, and it was a special place to have it in. Small enough to feel informal and special, but big enough to feel like an important event. It may sound silly to say that, but the architecture of some churches, in particular the more modern ones, just don't have that quality. The acoustics are fabulous too, if like me, you are lucky enough to have some beautiful music and singing at your wedding, or yes, even at a funeral, the acoustics work very well. There is space on the back balcony with the organ (which has a lovely sound) for musicians to play from and a choir to sit also. If you are a church enthusiast, I would recommend you take some quiet time to sit in here and enjoy the atmosphere, and if you're looking for a church to marry in, I couldn't recommend it more highly. The staff of the parish were unfailingly helpful with all the arrangements and just couldn't do enough. Ah, the memories...

There is always someone on the reception desk to help. There are many activities that take park in here. Including a full time dat care facility. There is always a buzz about this place.

We are part of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. Our church meets for worship and fellowship every Sunday morning at 10.30am and Sunday evening at 7.00pm. Everyone's welcome to our services and to the many events and organisations we run throughout the week. Our building didn't always look like it does today. We completed a major renovation and rebuilding project in September 2008 and our new building gives us more space, more facilities and more possibilities. But the new building is simply a means to an end. It helps us to be an open and welcoming church which serves our community - and we're excited about how the community is responding.
