My grandmother had life alert. The day she stopped breathing we pressed the button for emergency assistance and it didn't alert anyone just completely stopped working. Tired to call to cancel. The representative is so rude. They informed us that we signed a three year contact stating only way to cancel is to have documentation of licensed home care, nursing facility or death certificate. Stated they called twice to confirm we knew this ( did not call twice). The equipment breaks easily and you have to pay for replacement( they did do a one time free replacement). I see how they are considered a predatory company. It should never be this hard to cancel a service. Now we have to either decide to take a hit on our credit, or keep and let them collect over $3000. I would also give them a "0" zero, they have lousy customer service and rude customer service representatives. They delivered an open box of product to my front porch, left it and told me to just plug it in. When I called to question it on the same day it was left 10/30/2025 I was told it was open because the technician/service provider tested it outside of my home. I don't care where they tested it! I was charged almost $300.00 including billing for monitoring for the month of November at $69.00 per month. When I called requesting new unopened monitoring equipment, first I was denied. Secondly, I was told there was a problem with scheduling compatible with my availability. I asked how did I cancel. The Life Alert system gave my elderly family member a sense of security but, ironically, it was only used by accident a few times. In real times of need it was not. Go figure. Every interaction with Life Alert has shown professionalism and caring support. Sure, there were some odd things along the way but nothing that interfered with a quick response to activation of the system. One odd thing, and I must admit to not really knowing about any contract that was in place, was that seemingly all of a sudden there were fairly expensive monthly charges. Trying to cancel is a nightmare. On hold for over 1 hour. After going through multiple operators I finally got to someone who could cancel the account since my father passed away. The send a text with instructions on how to send an obituary. The link didn't take an attachement correctly. Call back, waited for 20min. Finally got it sent. A few days later they say they recieved it and I needed to call them back. Agian on hold for 20min only to find out there was no need to call them back. The last thing you need is this run around after you loose someone and are busy taking care of so many things. It sould be easy to do online. I signed up Life Alert to have them take care of my elderly sister. I paid for it for almost a year. Unfortunately, my husband and I lost our jobs and can no longer afford to have this service. I've tried to cancel it by calling the company and sending a termination letter and hoped they would understand my situation. They said NO they will not let me out of the contract and if I don't pay, they will send me to collections. Although in the contract it says that if you don't pay, they won't offer the service any longer. Obviously, I don't want to have my record taken to collections. My mother never had to actually use the service, so I can't comment on that. The reason why I would warn everyone to never sign up for Life Alert is it is practically impossible to cancel. The device malfunctioned, setting off my grandparents alarm at 2am which triggered a response from your team. They were absolutely terrified to be woken up to what they thought were intruders in the middle of the night. Unacceptable. We've spoken to 6 different support people for over two hours today to try to cancel the service and return the device so it doesn't happen again and we've received zero help and were told we have to wait out our contract. I've had Life Alert since 2023 and used it for the first time last month. My husband (86) fell and had to be taken to the hospital. They had an ambulance here in 10 minutes and alerted my contact and even gave her a follow-up call to report his status. We were very pleased with the service. Unfortunately he passed away last week. I called them today to cancel the service and was told I signed a 3 year contract that expires in 2026 and they refused to cancel it. When my husband died I lost his pension and must now live on my Social Security and can no longer afford to pay $118 a month. My sister set my parents up on life alert many years ago when they were still in their own home. Later our widowed mother kept the plan when she moved. Over the years there were many emergency calls. Each time we would be notified. Life Alert would not share specifics or even if Mom had been transported, even after Mom filed numerous HIPAA authorizations. We often had to track down the hospital she had been taken to or if she had sustained injuries. An illness last year made it clear she needed to be moved to a different type of living facility. We were cleaning her apartment, and I collected as many Life Alert components as I recognized in case she still needed them. We phoned Life Alert, and they put the account on hold. When she passed, I called to cancel. Life Alert representatives were extremely rude and arrogant and demanded return of equipment. I told them I would send everything I had, but that wasn't good enough. They insisted on knowing where the missing items were and why I didn't have them. My 92 year old mother who has very sever hearing issues decided to order this product on her own over the phone on 9/9/24 it arrived on the 12th and I was asked to come and get it set up for her. I knew nothing about this purchase. All she wanted was a pendent to where everywhere she goes. Joe Gianelli sold her the base unit, pendent to wear within 1000 feet of base station, a shower button and a pendent to wear when is outside of her unit. This came with a $248 non-refundable cost which was unknown to me. I spent over an hour setting up and testing the units which I was told need to be tested monthly after original set up. I left town for the weekend and 9/16 my mother was so mad she said pack this crap up and send it back. After a conversation with Joe on the 16th and no return call that week I made more calls on 9/23 - 9/24 and 9/30 I was told they would send a UPS return label That took a week and they received the return 10/7. They refuse to credit her the $248 and are also charging us for monitoring of devices $65.81. I strongly believe that this company took advantage of her and sold her products that did not do what she wanted. She wanted 1 pendent that worked everywhere. Life Alert does not sell that kind of service and should have never sold her this product. We have switched to Medical guardian at about a third of the upfront cost and less than half the monthly fees, Please make sure you don't make this mistake read more

If you are elderly, and live alone. Yes this product will work However, you can get a cheaper one with a different company that will do the same. Read the contract because when you sign it... it's 3 years!! It's hard to get out of that contract. Even after the 3 years are up. They will try to sell you other things you don't need. The travel size phone they offer will NOT track you. Sometimes it takes more than 5 minutes before someone talks to you over the machine. Their customer service is terrible. If you are not the payer, or sent them proof you have power of attorney over your parent, you won't be able to change anything. If you have special instructions on how to handle your parent in emergencies, you're going to have to send letters before it can be implemented. My experience is that the devices hardly work. When it was installed, the people they send are rude. If you absolutely need this, try a different company first, but if not, get life alert at your own risk. read more

Somewhere in that stack of paperwork we unknowingly agreed to deduct over $3000 from our checking account for setup fees, this fee, that fee and 3 years of monthly payments in advanced. Then to cancel is another major issue with this company. it's almost impossible to get someone on the phone to talk to you and when you do it's almost impossible to get out of the contract. We ordered Life Alert for my father. He never used it properly and they kept calling and send messages that it wasn't being used correctly. When my father moved in with my brother I tried to cancel the contract. They told me that a doctor's note was needed stating that he no longer needed the service. My father obtained the note and all items were returned. If you don't return all of the items you are billed for the missing items, which is very costly so I made sure the everything was sent back. I asked for a letter stating that the contract was canceled. I called them several times asking for the letter. They finally told me that it was mailed on March 28 To this day, April 19, I have not received the letter. I called them several times asking for them to send another letter but was told to wait for the letter that was mailed. I feel that this is very poor customer service. Also, the shortest contract you can get is 3 years. In my opinion it should be yearly. read more

The absolute WORST company and customer service, EVER! My mom tried calling to return her equipment because she's VERY unhappy with this service (they're unresponsive to call her when her pendant goes off, her pendant goes off all the time even though it was never pressed, etc). When she called Life Alert she became VERY upset on the phone. I heard her raising her voice and not being able to finish her sentences from the other room. Even though I didn't know what was going on or who she was talking to, I actually got up and grabbed the phone out of her hand to take over, because I didn't want her to have another stroke. That's how upset she was! I was met with Edwin, a manager in the Customer Service department at Life Alert. He is HORRID! Talking over you, belittling, confrontational. Turns out my mom was locked under a 3-year contract and didn't realize it. That's because Life Alert never bothered explaining this to her! I told Edwin that Life Alert is an unreliable service and that that's why we're canceling. He seemed to find great joy in telling both my mom and I that the contract was non-negotiable, and that the only clause that allows for cancellation of this 3-year contract is if she were moved into a nursing home. At that point, I mentioned that it once took Life Alert more than 6 minutes to call my mom and check to see if she was OK when the pendant was pressed! (My mom could have been dead by then!) Edwin told me that that "wasn't his problem" and that if I took issue with it then I should contact their call center and ask to speak to a manager there. So he's deflecting the issues, making me do the leg work instead of offering to look into the issue himself, and overall just being a horrible person: interrupting, placing blame, being confrontational, and seeming to find joy in BADGERING my elderly mom and making her extremely upset! Now my mom just leaves her box plugged in and doesn't even bother wearing her pendant. She tried unplugging her box but the non-stop "low battery" verbal warning drove her crazy, so she just leaves it plugged in. My poor, elderly mom is SO UPSET and shaken up by this company that she's forced to pay for a service she doesn't even use. Even when she did use it it was unreliable and upsetting. She'd get embarrassed every time her pendant went off when it was either faulty or accidentally pressed because it's hypersensitive. Do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY from this horrendous company! STAY AWAY from this company. I signed up for their service for my 87 year old father in-law. Once you sign with them they will not let you out. My father in-law had a minor stroke in September 2024 where he spent 2 weeks in the hospital. He now lives in a skilled nursing facility. We have no idea how long he will be living at this facility while getting stronger. He will then be moved to a long term facility (date to be determined). His family has been told that he will not be returning home. I tried to cancel his service to which I need a letter from the facility on their letter head stating that he has been living there more than 6 months before I can cancel. Are they crazy they want you to pay for at least six months when you will no longer be using their services. I told them I will just go ahead and stop their automatic payments where they became very vocal and threated to take my 87 year old father in-law with dementia to court. My brother subscribed to this service for our mother. He died in June 2022, I called two weeks later to notify Life Alert , as the payment was automatic withdrawal. They requested I fax a death certificat, once received they would make appointment to pick up the equipment. It is now September, they called our mother requested payment for the account and in her confusion and grief at 88, paid it. I have dealing with everyone from Corrine to Ruth and now waiting here from Ruth. They refuse to refund the payment and cannot seem to find death certificate or record of my June phone call. They equipment has been boxed up since June as we've been waiting for pick up. I am sicken by the customer service and the fact they requested payment from our mother, the subscriber not payer.
