The amazing humans working at Levons place.

What a great space filled with charm and great staff. I was there for the paper kites show. The sound acoustics of the room is magical. Mr Levon May he rest in peace would be so proud of the great customer service the staff bestows upon guest. I had the greatest conversation with the staff before the show started. If you have never been to Levon Helm Studios. Do your self a favor check out their website for upcoming events shows. To the Helm studio staff. You guys rock see you next time.

I'd have seen the Lioness in Winter Patty Griffin with her spirit dragon and devoted guitar shaman and musical soulmate David Pulkingham at a roadhouse on the banks of the Tallahatchie or Yazoo River or anyplace this size if I could so I came here. Levon's Studios. His Barn. She took this pit stop on 7/3/22 out of reverence, out of affection, out of loving kindness. Now, with Levon having moved on to the colossal Band up there some heaven away, maybe it's not quite the same. I can't know really as this was my first time there. Maybe there was a time when the driveway wasn't riddled with potholes so deep you hurt knew your car was bottoming out repeatedly from bone rattling smackdowns. Maybe there was a time when you'd come a little early, asking to just park in the field that serves as their parking lot (and more joy for your undercarriage) and you weren't briskly told "no" and stared at until you turned tail and drove up to Bearsville to wait out the thirty minutes. Where you chatted up a local who tells you're darn right Sandy doesn't want people there - she lives there! So she suggests you check out the Bearsville Inn bathrooms and you do and who's there? A mural of Levon that covers the wall floor to ceiling laughing at you: "well boy - why are you here when my home's open?" And the hard things haven't changed even since the 1975 barn burnt down and was rebuilt that made it any less tolerable. Not easy to stand back up against a chimney no room to move while someone burns wood somewhere in July choking out us asthmatics. And you get a sense this is the Cool Kids club and you ain't in it. Rules that seem more unfriendly at times than for the good of everyone. Even the architecture was less warm and inviting and more austere in its hot box, no fan, no air conditioning, no windows for cross breezes to blow away the dismal stagnate ennui of heat. And all that crippled creaking and wooden groaning of ceaseless wandering dispassionate attendees routinely interrupting the quietest passages. Only recent times have brought us more distractions with selfish videoing with phone that have search and rescue klieg lights ruining the dark sanctuary. But like Duane Allman's brother said after his sixth divorce: "maybe I've got something to do with this..." Heck, maybe if Levon were to read this, he'd either grimace and tell me to get lost and grow up and lose the entitlement. This ain't Carnegie Hall (where I was in May) Or maybe he'd chuckle and remind me what I'm missing. He'd point out this is more church than lounge. He'd say the spirits rise from uncomfortable behinds. He'd show me the holy by just pointing to the stage and saying simply: there's maybe two or three altars and launching pads to communal music like that left. You're looking at one, Son. Now you thank my Sandy kindly." And the next day after Patty at Levon's, I stood at the Woodstock Field Stone in Bethel - closed. Still I wandered on that field of rock and roll ghosts, envisioning a little piece of that heaven. Even met a sweet older woman there who was a girl that summer of '69 weekend at the edge of the stage all three days. "That peace and love thing?" She asked me. She whispered the answer beaming with pride..."It was real." So when you go to Levon's, don't be tourist. Show some love for what's still alive there - and in you. And go not to remember but never to forget. Make a memory of the night because like it or not, it'll eventually make a memory out of you. History is made at night - the best kind anyway. Like Patty Griffin remembered the night they drove ole electricity down from some northern storm last time she was at Levon's, they just lit candles and sang away the darkness. The heart aches for that kind of break: the break with the workaday spirit killing grind, where voices rising leave all that meaningless behind and bring back the promise we made to our selves running breathless just to run some summer's day with no clocks or bills: the promise we'd always keep the truth that the sweetest joy in life comes from music shared especially in those sparest of spaces where maybe, just maybe there's no call for you to show up early and sit in a field like a lump on a log but there's damn sure all the reason in the world for you to ramble in and join the chorus of what makes you....us. So go and don't let the rough edges cheat you of an extraordinary experience. And show some gratitude for grace. I suppose even if we were to make it into the hands of God one gentle day, we'd have to mind His callouses from working all those miracles. God bless Sandy Helm for keeping Levon alive with the one thing that most times stands between us and a little more dying: music. There's no place like Helm.

This place is an absolute gem. It is intimate and the acoustics are wonderful. We saw Dar Williams there and we really enjoyed it. Be aware that if you sit upstairs in balcony seats you will hear the bathroom door slamming behind you. Besides that, I would highly recommend this venue as a place to see awesome music. The staff is super friendly.

Went to a Midnight Ramble - life will never be the same. This is a very magical experience. You will be in the middle of the woods in a charming barn with exquisite acoustics .You will not believe the talent that is here. The staff is beyond sweet and so accommodating. If you really love great music, nothing could be better. You'll feel Levon in the room. Looking down with love no doubt.

First time here and was not disappointed. Midnight Ramble on New Years Eve was a great experience. Met some great people from all over the USA in a small intimate rustic setting with about 200 people. Music was wonderful and you can almost feel their breath when singing. My girl friend has attended several times before and gave Amy a necklace on New Years in 2013. I brought a cold pasta dish to share at the community table. Used a plastic wine carafe as our cups so no need to run to my car for refills. Thanks to Amy and all of the performers for this very special event.

What a venue! Score tickets as early as possible after they go on sale, don't delay even if you think it won't sell out. You'll get the best selection of seat or standing room the earlier you buy your ticket because it determines your place in line (think Southwest Airlines style). Bring your own beer in cans if possible and bring cups, red solo, also if possible, that's what you can bring into the venue, none for sale. If you forget cups the front ticket stand may have some. Get there a little early and tailgate a bit and talk to your fellow showgoers. A bit hard to go to the bathroom if you need to go before they let people inside so keep that in mind. The staff has a way they do things and they're going to do it that way, so be sure to follow their instructions if they tell you to do this or that. And then for crying out loud enjoy the show - not a bad seat in the house but we really liked being on the front row of the standing area upstairs!

Sometimes you just have to be fortunate in life and count your blessings for some of the events and places that happen in life. Coming to Levon Helms studio just outside of Woodstock was one of those amazing life experiences that I'll never forget. Wow , I was fortunate enough to attend 2 of the 5 live studio sessions The Black Crowes recorded at Levon's studio in the winter of 2009. This would be last studio record they would ever record but was recorded with a live audience and I was part of it. The studio itself was large enough for around 100 to 150 guests. There were seats (folded chairs) on the main floor but if you smart enough to make it to the rafters you can watch from above and watch everyone jamming away like it was in your living room. Rarely does one get to experience music being created in a home style environment and at Levon's house the magic happens constantly. Thanks Levon for creating a magical place for musicians and music lovers to connect.

It was a Thursday so maybe things weren't as busy as normal but we showed up a little early and the back biergarten was open so we got some drinks as it was a nice spring afternoon. The bartender was very friendly and when we attempted to bring our drinks around front she let us know that we had to finish them first. The Venue itself reminded me a bit of the nearby Levon Helm studios in that it's an open space with a balcony overlooking everything and seating and standing room on the base floor. One thing I loved about this show is the sound was great. We sat stage left but the PA was subtly piping the DJ and guitar parts from stage right. It wasn't a huge crowd but people were having a good time with some standing room in front of the bar dancing etc. The bartenders were super attentive and responsive during the performance. I have been to Bearsville, Levon Helm and now Colony and I really feel lucky to have such intimate performance spaces somewhat locally. All of the staff were super friendly. Will be back for sure!

Bar was overflowed and took a long time to save everyone, I think no one expected the crowd of that size. Kitchen worked smoothly and food was bar quality but decent. We had a lot of fun and definitely will be back. I took away one star because of the luck of seating. Not enough tables or bar space or any kind of seating for everyone. Only about 50 people who got there at the opening had a chance to get a seat. Others like us lucked out and had to figure out how to eat without a table .

Great concert but I had to leave for a few in middle to get a fan because I thought l was going to pass out. Bathroom design from the 80s I guess, huge bathroom with many stalls for men and 1 man in there and women's bathroom smaller only a few stalls and a line of 30 women like why can't they redesign this? One small heat pump a/c hanging on the wall in back of the theater with hundreds of people crammed in soaking wet with sweat. It's great beyond that but it's like they're practicing to be a theater. There's a Mexican restaurant and Tavern right next door, which are nice amenities. There was also plenty of parking and the outside was well lit. The Theater itself felt brand new. It was super modern and clean. There was a small bar with various drinks. As far as food, I only saw candy and chips listed. Water was also $4 and came in an environmentally friendly bottle. Bathrooms were downstairs, which wasn't an issue for me but could be for someone with limited mobility. If you have limited mobility and plan on visiting, I would call to ensure the restrooms can be accessed. The room where the musicians perform is large and there is a small seating area upstairs, which is a different, more expensive ticket. I did see about 5 or 6 stools downstairs for those who need to sit. Unfortunately, the main act was unable to perform but the theater did send out an email several hours before the show started to let guests know their options so that was appreciated. Overall, it's a really nice venue for a show!

A Community Venue Changed…read more The Egremont Barn, now operating as Buttonball Barn, was once a cornerstone of local music and community gathering. Because of our long-standing connection to the space, my husband and I chose it for our wedding celebration, placing our deposit with the previous owners, who were professional and supportive throughout the process. After the property changed ownership, we still proceeded with our event in October. This celebration held particular significance, as my father was seriously ill at the time, and we were grateful he was able to attend. Unfortunately, our experience with the new ownership raised serious concerns about professionalism, transparency, and respect for both clients and staff. On the day of the event, the owner attempted to impose additional charges not outlined in our contract. This included a demand for a $500 fee for using a room to get ready--a space she had explicitly told me I could use earlier in the day, noting it was acceptable despite the building being under construction. While I was getting ready, she entered the room while my mother and a family friend were assisting me and removed a rug from beneath them, stating that I "wasn't supposed to use the room all day." I chose not to address this at the time in order to preserve the tone of the day. Throughout the event, the owner was also openly drinking at the open bar, which had been paid for by my father. As the night concluded, she insisted that I personally break down the entire venue either immediately or first thing the following morning--despite knowing I had family visiting--or I would be charged for a cleaning crew. This expectation had not been communicated beforehand and was not included in the contract. When I suggested discussing it the next day, she continued to press the issue and confronted my husband, who attempted to redirect the conversation. To avoid further escalation, my friends and I cleaned the venue that night--while I was still in my wedding dress. She later stated that she would retain space heaters I had purchased in exchange for waiving the disputed room fee. When I noted that none of these charges or arrangements were contractually agreed upon, she responded, "I'm expensive, and I'm not in the contract either, honey," in reference to her being casted on The Real Housewives of New York City. Additionally, her conduct toward long-standing staff members--many of whom had supported the venue for years--was concerning and contributed to an atmosphere that felt transactional rather than community-centered. Some of those staff members have since left the venue. What was most troubling was the timing and context. The attempts to extract additional money occurred at the end of a wedding celebration involving a seriously ill parent, placing unnecessary stress on a family during an already significant moment. The Egremont Barn once represented collaboration, music, and mutual respect. Under its current ownership, that spirit appears to have shifted toward aesthetics and revenue at the expense of community and care. I encourage readers to proceed with caution, ask detailed questions, and ensure all expectations are clearly documented in writing before booking events there.
