I took my first class here with Sonyo and she is amazing. Not only is she clearly very knowledgeable, but she is an attentive, empathetic teacher. She's got a way of making a classroom setting feel like more personal instruction. She can quickly diagnose where you're going astray and prescribe a solution on the fly. Also, as someone with very little experience in dance, she did much to keep me engaged with the lesson while alleviating my anxiety. The space itself is very nice, well lit, clean, a great sound system and (a big deal for me) it's well ventilated. Love this studio! I've been coming here for almost 2 years. Originally, I joined as a thing I was doing to try out different after work activities for a month but I loved it so much, I stayed and it's been almost 2 years now! Bernard the instructor is funny, kind, and so patient and informative when he teaches. And he breaks down the moves so you never feel lost or overwhelemed. My salsa and on2 dancing have improved so much because of him! I've tried out different studios, but this one, by far, is my favorite and I feel so confident going out dancing since I've learned so much here! My wife and I just had a wedding reception at DanceSport, and I can't say enough about this place. Sonyo and Barnard handled everything from nuts and bolts to finished product, and it was amazing! My wife and I are pretty hard to please, so us being blown away with the way our reception turned out says it all. I have been attending classes at DanceSport and Fitness for about a year and a half now, and I must say that Bernard and Sonyo are great instructors. DanceSport offers many classes for all levels of dancers. I had no previous dance experience, and within a year and a half of taking classes at the DanceSport Studio I have learned to dance Salsa, Cha Cha, Mambo, and Bachata. DanceSport offers many classes for all levels of dancers. Each class begins with about 15 minutes of solo footwork that is integrated into the partner portion of the class. Both Bernard and Sonyo breakdown how to accomplish each move through proper technique. During the partner portion of the class, you rotate. I find that rotating partners is important because you gain experience becoming a better follower/lead. Bernard and Sonyo make their classes fun, light, and comfortable, their goal is to make you a confident technically sound social dancer. The best thing about this duo is their passion for dance, you learn not only how to dance but also things like timing, the different types of artists/music to the dance, and the history behind a dance. This was not what I thought it would be. I wanted to take lessons with my girlfriend because she likes to dance. we took the salsa class. when you take this class they rotate your partner very often .... too often. I never really saw my girlfriend. At one point I had to go to a separate room so i saw her through the window. The teacher always showed up late sometimes not at all. when she didn't show up assistants taught the class and another person did warm ups which the class were not familiar with. I along with everyone else were lost most of the time because they advance to the next move without spending proper time on previous routine. When I voiced this I was patronized and some how blamed for not being caught up with what the assistants were doing. I feel many people in the class felt like this. I was there to have fun and learn to dance with my lady but that is not what I got. I would also add that I am a teacher and I would never move on to the next lesson or routine or any memorizing foundation if my students were lost. It is just not good teaching. read more

GO AT YOUR OWN RISK! I didn't even get to take a class because I am standing outside and the place is closed! I bought a Groupon and was uber excited to start these classes. I confirmed the date and time 1/9 at 3PM with Bernard via email and phone. So why am I here and he isn't? After leaving a voicemail, he did just call back to tell me I "had it wrong"and there was never a class at this date/time. Really? Well that is not what your emails or website stated! He continued to argue he was not in the wrong and it was not until I told him I was going to request my money back, and leave a less than stellar review that he then conceded to say "let me make it up to you". Seriously?!? I understand that mistakes happen, and I would have been cool with rescheduling until he implied I was a liar. read more

This review is long overdue! We came to Bernard with an open slate for our first dance. Put it this way, we never took any dancing classes in the past or were we ever dancers. He really took the time to teach us the basic steps and make sure our first dance was everything we envisioned! He incorporated everything including slow dancing, dips and bachata! What we are most grateful for is him taking the time to change his schedule around to meet us and making sure we were comfortable with the steps even though we went past the hour. We've taken dance classes at so many other studios in So Cal.. and this is the only place we'd rather take classes at for Salsa, Cha cha, and Bachata lol There are so many studios out there who's instruction is so diluted, but Bernard and Sonyo are excellent teachers who really break down technique and truly know what they are talking about. read more

If you want to surprise your family and friends with a fun wedding dance, this is the place to go. Bernard is an excellent salsa teacher; the best salsa teacher in Long Beach, hands down. My soon-to-be-husband, a guy with no coordination and rhythm, and I, wanted a fun, energetic and sexy salsa dance for our wedding in Puerto Rico. And Bernard did everything to teach him the very basics of rhythm, coordination and style, and helped me to improve my salsa style, which was very basic. After the first phase of learning the basics, Bernard created piece by piece a fun choreography with a song I requested, my favorite salsa song "El Timbalero" by El Gran Combo. He helped us detail by detail until we felt very confident with our wedding dance. On the day of our wedding, everyone was surprised to see my husband and I dance that song, which is really fast in rhythm. I couldn't be more happier with the results. I don't know you Bernard but you clearly can work magic! As if I hadn't cried enough happy and proud tears at my daughter's wedding (Dayna K) but then the DJ announces the bride and grooms first dance and OMG... there I go again! I was aware that they had received some guidance but in no way did I expect such a perfectly choreographed dance that they executed flawlessly! My now son-in-law did not dance at all before Bernard but you would never have known that watching them. I'm so glad that I found Level Up dance studio. I just finished my first 6 week salsa dance series and signed up again. It is good for me, I recently lost my cousin, my best friend and was sad a lot, taking salsa dance classes is one of my therapy. Bernard provides a safe, fun, and classy place for his students. This is a dance studio that I will recommend and even take my own nieces and nephews to and even my church friends. Bernard provides a safe atmosphere for his students where we have fun dancing, meet new friends, and feel comfortable. There is no judgment here, people from different ages, different sizes, different cultures and background, people from all walks of life come here to learn together and we have nice, clean, fun. Both men and women learn to increase their confidence, meeting new people. Salsa dancing is a social skill that improves personality and confidence. In salsa, I learned that there's a leader and a follower in dancing. If you are like me who has difficulty following and trusting, this is a good place to learn a new skill. If you are someone who is kind of shy and has difficulty approaching people, you will learn to be comfortable talking and dancing to new friends you meet in the studio. I'm getting ready to start my third 6-week class here. I cannot speak highly enough about the whole experience. From the first class, I felt welcomed by the staff and comfortable enough to actually try to dance around other people. The pace is fairly quick but there is a lot to cram into 6 short weeks. Practice a little bit each week and that fast pace will feel a lot more manageable. I am getting so much out of each week. Never boring, very doable, and seriously, the staff is awesome. Sonyo has me laughing out loud at least once per week. She's wonderfully approachable and warm. It's such a great environment. I've already recommended DanceSport to quite a few people and I plan to keep going back as long as my schedule allows. read more

DanceSport California is the best studio to go to learn salsa dancing in southern California. I am an unlimited monthly student and attend almost all of their classes. Unlike other places that I have been to that just teach moves, DanceSport CA focuses on technique. They emphasize footwork and proper lead/follow. They teach salsa dancing on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. West coast swing is taught on Wednesdays. Various workshops are held on Sundays. Socials are held about every other week. They also teach mambo (salsa on2), social cha cha, bachata, and merengue. read more

I found these guys and when I heard about their pricing I thought: "they must suck. It's too cheap." Wrong!! They were the best I learned from and so I stayed with them for years until I moved out of the area. But I have referred countless people to them over the years, and I've never gotten a complaint. I was observing an open salsa event at Dos Lagos in Corona and while the majority of the dancers were good there were a few wearing black t-shirt with red wing that really stood out from the crowd. I complemented one of them and asked where they learned to dance and that's how I found out about this dance studio. After taking latin dance classes here I now understand what makes a dancer stand out amongst the crowd. Anybody can teach you to go through the steps but it takes top rate instructors like Bernard, Alejandra, et el. to drill on proper technique, form, lead and follow, feeling the music and much much more to make the steps look great.
