When I first wandered the 13eme, I wasn't very impressed; I saw only a smattering of Asian traiteurs and grocery stores. When I reached Tang Frères (literally, when I turned the corner), my eyes almost fell out of my head. I've NEVER seen such an enormous Asian supermarket. The way that it's arranged is not very intuitive to me (even though I feel like I have a lot of experience wandering around Asian supermarkets); I can't ever seem to find the spices / sauces that I want. There also aren't very many workers walking around, so it's extremely difficult to find help. However, that allows you to wander around and explore all the awesome things that they sell. :D Chives are surprisingly expensive. (I just had to say that :x It's really weird for me). There's a huge variety; I can't overemphasize this. I think you can pretty much find any Vietnamese / Chinese thing you'd need for any sort of cooking. Prices are decent for Paris. Today, I bought a lychee drink, a mangosteen drink, two sets of wonton wrappers, 500g of ground pork, chives, five-spice powder, coconut milk, and tiny tapioca pearls for only 11.20€. Amazing. ALSO! They ground their pork fresh :O It's so cool. I've never seen that. You do need to get a ticket in order to get served by the Boucherie, though. I totally didn't expect this at all and I stood around like an idiot, wondering how people knew it was their turn to get served. I guess it's a new system. It's a little out of the way, but it's totally worth a trip. :)

Odd, but fun to see a large asian grocery store with prices/tags in French and asian languages (chinese, japanese, thai, laotian, etc). (Paris is the capitol of mom/pop mini marts, imho.) It had sriracha that I was looking for to enliven a stirfry and fresh/cheap asian veggies. Their Chinese BBQ chop house was pricey. Half a fresh roast duck was 17euros ($23+/-). Easy to shop, just make sure to bring your own grocery shopping bags.

Came here in desperation for some instant korean ramyun before our movie because days of bread and…read moreduck and pasta can get you feeling a little queasy. (If you're anything like me). Delighted to find so many varieties of not only ramyun, but tons of other korean foods packed into this tiny little mart. If I had a kitchen I would have bought more snacks and goods. I was hoping they would have kimchi in a bag too and they did! And plenty of them! And kimchi in a can too! Cooked, fresh, fermented to the max! Perfect! It does smell like crazy though just in case you take it to your hotel. Even when we put the kimchi in a ziplock bag and inside of our mini fridge, it was still very smelly. I survived off of this ramyun for two days, ate it once for dinner and once for breakfast. The kimchi was sooooooo good. Highly recommend getting it with the instant noodles. You can ask for chopsticks as well at the front. You have to pay for bags so bring your own if you don't want to fork out a few cents. Stop by here on your way to the theater! About a 5 minute walk from the main street where all the shops and theater is!

The staff is friendly and helpful incase you have any questions and the prices are totally fair in my opinion. I absolutely love their activated charcoal toothpaste (3.45 euro) Its the best toothpaste I have ever used. They also have neem in several formats, dry leaves, powder and oil. The incense selection is quite big with the same scents from a few manufacturers. They have copper mugs and travel bottles. The store itself is not so huge but its definitely packed with a large variety. I will absolutely be back here and I totally urge you to check it out and have a look, don't be afraid to try something new!

Shopping at Velan is always an educational experience as well. There are so many amazing foods to discover, and often finding the ingredients in French can be a challenge if you're used to the name in English. For example, we had to ask three different people where the dried Kaffir lime leaf was (it's feuilles de kokumba in French) since we had no idea what it was called. It was actually another shopper that steered us in the right direction.
