BEWARE: Services / prices NOT as advertised
Where to begin... We got married on the Toronto Islands this summer and hired Leena (Let's Party Consultants) as our wedding planner. As everyone else has already mentioned, Leena is very responsive when trying to get hired but tends to disappear once the contract has been signed and deposit made. As the bride, I was pretty relaxed as far as brides go and certainly did not expect Leena to be at my beck and call. However, over the course of 6-7 months of planning, I think I spoke to Leena on the phone maybe 5 or 6 times (even closer to the wedding date) and nearly always at my prompting. It's difficult to discuss everything via email and can get very time consuming and Leena's reluctance to have regularly scheduled phone calls resulted in delays with certain things, most notably our invitations. Luckily we had a small wedding so the invites hiccup did not affect things too much but that is besides the point.
As planning progressed, so did our costs. At no point did Leena want to discuss a budget and how we can save money, despite my asking several times. In fact, Leena seemed to go out of her way to raise costs. We highly suspect she takes cutbacks from all of the things she pushes on her clients. For example, she absolutely insisted we needed a tent, straight up LIED about the fact that there was no indoor space at the venue in the event of rain (being temporarily in another province, we had booked the venue sight unseen) and then quoted us the ridiculous price of over $5000. Understandably freaked out by the hefty price tag, I went over Leena's head and called the venue personally only to be told that no tent was necessary as there was an indoor room to be used in case of inclement weather and that we were the only couple even looking into it.
This was a common experience. Leena frequently quoted us prices that seemed ridiculously exorbitant and the only way to determine the veracity of the quote was to reach out to vendors personally - a process which rendered the hiring of Leena null and void. Why am I doing all the legwork when we hired you specifically for that purpose?
Moving on to décor... We decided to go with Leena's in-house décor team as it seemed to be the easiest way to keep everything within one team for the sake of cohesion and clarity (and our sanity). Bad idea. Based on our vision (I sent pictures of exactly what I wanted with details about how many, colours, etc.), Leena initially quoted us around $1500 (approximate). The final bill was close to $5000. That's almost 3 times the original quote. We were charged the ridiculous sum of $300+ for seashells and sand! Despite my telling her in advance that we wanted the chuppah for our ceremony (which was already present at the venue for no charge), Leena told me literally 2 days before the wedding that she would not be assembling it. She literally said (and I'm quoting) that it was a "foreign piece of equipment" for her team and they would not know how to assemble it. Despite being wedding planners for a decade, her team was stumped when faced with the riddle that is a wedding chuppah. Unbelievable. She also only let me know that she would not be assembling it upon my reaching out to her to confirm this and got somewhat nasty in her responses. Imagine the unpleasant surprise that would've awaited me on my wedding day had I not reached out to confirm this in the first place.
The few days leading up to our wedding, Leena COMPLETELY disappeared. By which I mean she refused to respond to texts or emails, even ones that were time-sensitive and urgent such as booking water taxis to get the wedding party to the island. I had ZERO contact with her on the day of my wedding. Luckily by then I had accepted Leena's poor work ethic and lack of interest in her clients (beyond a paycheque) as one of life's lemons so I managed to stay calm but it was frustrating to say the least.
Having said all of that, our wedding was set up beautifully (but considering the ridiculous costs, still not super-fancy or anything). The décor was lovely and Leena's team kept things going fairly smoothly on the day of.
Verdict: Do NOT hire Leena or Let's Party Consultants unless you're willing to spend an extra $10,000 (which is the amount that we estimate she over-charged us). I would maybe recommend hiring her to be the day-of consultant as she did keep the event flowing smoothly. read more
