Simply put. This bakery had some of the best pastries I had the pleasure of sampling while I was in Paris. YUM! On top of that, they were actually nice to a non-French speaking American. Extra points! read more

We went for two reasons: Macarons and Baguette Sandwiches. The Macaron selection was plentiful, affordable and well packaged. They had the delightful texture you'd expect and were packed with flavor. Our standout though were the baguettes. Every morning we'd pick one up for our days adventure. The Hamon and Butter was a bit lighter on butter than some of the others we had at Versailles but the mozzarella was perfect and honestly makes me wish we had something remotely as tasty here in the states. Filling without being too filling, these were the perfect carb bombs to energize our day of walking around Paris. Worth a detour to stop in here.

There's only one small table inside so I assume everyone gets their food to go. Aside from these two items, there's so many desserts to choose from and a few subs to try based on what you're craving. I would surely make this my go-to morning spot if I lived here. AT and I were wandering about the 14th arr. to kill time (since we arrived early, which was definitely not thanks to me), discover the quarter, and look for something to eat. We stopped in Eric Kayser to see how the sandwiches looked and truthfully, we were somewhat disappointed to find the available sandwiches pre-made in the refrigerated case. I still remembered my first jambon-beurre on a fabulously crusty baguette from Eric Kayser in the 6th. It was a portable bundle of heaven made right in front of my eyes (even with a huge line behind me), which I slowly gnawed at as I traversed Parisian streets for the first time in 2011. It seemed we made it during off-peak hours and thus were met with pre-made, refrigerated sammies. I couldn't leave empty-handed though, so I requested a pain aux raisins, while AT ordered a pain au chocolat (typically, we would order the other way around). Nice enough service. AT went to talk and pay, while I admired the artfully made and decorated pastries. Because I didn't want us to break the bank and I knew I had to be careful, what with the impending gorge fest that would happen in Brittany, I refrained from adding to our pair of pastries. We ate them a few hours later on the train and they provided us with welcome respite of buttery, flaky delicacy.

We had just arrived at the hotel at around 10:00 at night, and after dropping off my bags I decided to go and have a look for some place to grab a drink - and this place certainly did the trick. However, as I mentioned, it wasn't cheap, but it also wasn't the most expensive place that I visited while I was in Paris. They had some decent beers on tap, including Leffe (which had become one of my staple beers while in Europe), and the waitress was really nice (and by this time I have pretty much come to accept the way they do things here - that is that they serve you, and give you the bill when you are finished). Okay, while it isn't in a really glamerous spot, it is still a reasonable place to grab a drink, or a bite to eat (they, like many of the places in Paris, are open from early til late, though not on a Sunday, they take their time on Sunday).

See, I have a particular set of skills (like Liam Neeson); skills I have acquired over many years. Skills that make me fat & happy. Skills that find eclairs. It's not like Maison Pradier is hard to discover. It was founded in 1859 as Maison Rollet (just a few steps from the French National Assembly) and has been a legendary rendezvous of Paris gourmands ever since. In 1987, it was renamed Maison Rollet-Pradier and in 1999 Jean-Marie Desfontaines (cousin of Louis Ernest Ladurée and the grandson of macaron creator Pierre Desfontaines) took over. Today, its reputation remains among the top of Parisian pastry elite. Which is where I came in ... to try the House Pradier chocolate eclair selected by Le Figaro as "Meilleur Eclair au Chocolat de Paris." The eclair was divine chocolate heaven !!!! If you find a better eclair in Paris, you might actually have died and are already in nirvana. I have two other strong recommendations for Maison Pradier: * Macarons ... colorful French magic * Religieuse au Chocolat ... awarded "Meilleure Religieuse au Chocolat de Paris" by Le Figaroscope You can also enjoy the restaurant upstairs for a lunch or get a savory meal tray to go. I didn't have time for those because I came to Rollet Pradier for one reason and one eclair only.
