Delicious stuffed mushrooms, tagliatelle pesto with goat cheese, and a giant sicilian pizza (yes, my husband is one of those people who likes anchovies), a demi pitchet of good local white wine- all tasty and under $30 total.

Highly recommended for a 'big shop' if staying in the area, LeClerc's cafeteria also serves a wide range of lunch options from 12 noon until 2pm (and drinks / cakes all afternoon). They are well known for their stone baked pizzas, baked fresh in their bread ovens when you order (to take away or eat in). Salads are fresh and delicious, affordable too (1.95 euros for a large bowl) and drinks are available by the bottle or draft, for that cheaper option. The on-site bar is open all day for a cheeky beer after your shop! Like most supermarkets in France, LeClerc provides trolleys which require a 1 Euro coin, so make sure you have some change on you before you shop. Also, carrier bags are not readily available, although LeClerc sell large and strong ones for 1 euro 50, which will last for years and years. There are often free packaging boxes for you to pop your shopping into, however. LeClerc is a large supermarket, selling fresh lobster, fish and snails amongst many other items. The alcohol selection is vast, covering two aisles and the delicatesen is second to none. Highly recommended!

The three appetizer composed of duck liver, duck pate and a sushi. All of them were extremely well seasoned and delicious. Next on to the main course! I ordered the steak with fried veggies. There were three purée on the side as well, I can only identify one as truffle. The steak was cooked to perfection and was seasoned beautifully. One of the best steaks I have ever tasted. Now onto the dessert. I ordered the cheese cake, but it's more some cheese on a cracker? (Not to say it taste bad) The top was filled with fresh strawberries and the cheese part of the dessert was absolutely mind boggling, it was the perfect end to my lunch at this quite French town!

That said, my family and I went to dinner here for Christmas Eve based on their positive reviews and holiday availability. The treatment was appalling under the guise of French hospitality. My mother-in-law has a stomach condition so would not be eating due to the prix fixe menu - my sister-in-law politely explained this. She lives here, is a teacher, and speaks fluently. This was not taken well, and the server complained to her that they shouldn't have given us that table and our hotel had booked our reservation for 6 etc. All besides the point because from a business perspective I understand how that kind of miscommunication can cause issues, BUT the server proceeded to later gossip to another table RIGHT next to our ours that Americans are so rude and explaining what had happened. This was all unsolicited (maybe she was friends with that table, but I do not consider that a valid excuse) and we were extremely polite. We were at a table in the middle of the room, so uncomfortable because we felt like we couldn't even speak/smile. Other tables were staring at us after they also all overheard the server's conversation. Unless you're desperate for a meal on a holiday when most restaurants are closed, skip this one. We kept trying to keep the mood light as this was also my sister-in-law's birthday, but the food wasn't impressive enough to make up for the poor attitude and atmosphere. My braised beef was more than 1/3 tough fat and the sauce on the potatoes was too salty to eat (and I love salty!). Have to give at least 1 star so...prices are decent for a 3-course meal!

As a New Yorker I started to crave the quick grab and go bagel for breakfast so we could spend less time eating and more time exploring the French countryside. On our last day we definitely wanted a quick bite to go since we were checking out of our AirBnB early in the morning and traveling to Le Mans. We found Fournil Saint Nicholas right in the heart of downtown Samumur, they have a variety of breakfast combinations for a cheap price- croissant + coffee for ~3 Euros. Taking a look a the sandwiches I was immediately drawn to the prosciutto/ mozzarella combo so no breakfast combo for me. A sandwich and a latte only set me back around 8 Euros or so which was perfect. I would definitely recommend stopping in if you're looking for a quick grab and go breakfast or lunch. The hostess didn't speak much English but thankfully we were able to order with my combination of 1st grade french and a lot of pointing.

I was spending a month in Saumur…read morein a rental house with a kitchen and so was keen to buy staples for when I cooked in the rental house. Prior to finding this supermarket I was shopping at the mega-mart "Super U" or visiting several shops including the charcuterie, boucherie and boulangerie to get all the staples needed to make a meal. I think a fair comparison for the Diagonal Supermarche in the United States would be Sprouts or Trader Joes. You can purchase all manner of food items there plus some sundries, cutlery, etc. The employees were incredibly friendly and helpful even though they spoke NO english and I speak zero French. The deli/butcher counter was filled with all kinds of french delicacies including many freshly prepared but ready-to heat and eat dishes. The produce was fresh and there was a great variety for a small store. This store is a great solution for either the drudgery of trekking through the megalo-mart supermarkets or the time consuming and physically taxing (for an American anyway) requirement of shopping at multiple stores. WHEN I return for another lovely holiday in Saumur, this will be my go-to place for every day grocery shopping. I'll still visit the Saturday markets in the center of Saumur because that is an experience regardless of whether shopping for food or not!

Recently refurbished and extended, Super U is ideal for every day shopping in the area - with a wide variety of meats, cheeses, breads and vegetables. Prices are very reasonable, on par with Tesco and Sainsburys in the UK, and the range is impressive. Staff are friendly, and relatively used to English speakers in the area. The store still accepts cheque payments. Alcohol in Super U is exceptionally well priced, local wines being purchased for 2-3 euros. 'Stubby' beers, Kronenburg for example, work out at approximately 8 euros for 26 bottles - very affordable. Like most supermarkets in France, Super U provides trolleys which require a 1 Euro coin, so make sure you have some change on you before you shop. They have baskets with wheels on, which make shopping easier. Carrier bags are not readily available, though there are often free packaging boxes for you to pop your shopping into, situated alongside the tills. Super U also sells gas, garden equipment (soil, plants, tools) and toys and games for Children.
