Highly recommended for a 'big shop' if staying in the area, LeClerc's cafeteria also serves a wide range of lunch options from 12 noon until 2pm (and drinks / cakes all afternoon). They are well known for their stone baked pizzas, baked fresh in their bread ovens when you order (to take away or eat in). Salads are fresh and delicious, affordable too (1.95 euros for a large bowl) and drinks are available by the bottle or draft, for that cheaper option. The on-site bar is open all day for a cheeky beer after your shop! Like most supermarkets in France, LeClerc provides trolleys which require a 1 Euro coin, so make sure you have some change on you before you shop. Also, carrier bags are not readily available, although LeClerc sell large and strong ones for 1 euro 50, which will last for years and years. There are often free packaging boxes for you to pop your shopping into, however. LeClerc is a large supermarket, selling fresh lobster, fish and snails amongst many other items. The alcohol selection is vast, covering two aisles and the delicatesen is second to none. Highly recommended!

I stumbled upon this store while driving to another destination. I was spending a month in Saumur…read morein a rental house with a kitchen and so was keen to buy staples for when I cooked in the rental house. Prior to finding this supermarket I was shopping at the mega-mart "Super U" or visiting several shops including the charcuterie, boucherie and boulangerie to get all the staples needed to make a meal. I think a fair comparison for the Diagonal Supermarche in the United States would be Sprouts or Trader Joes. You can purchase all manner of food items there plus some sundries, cutlery, etc. The employees were incredibly friendly and helpful even though they spoke NO english and I speak zero French. The deli/butcher counter was filled with all kinds of french delicacies including many freshly prepared but ready-to heat and eat dishes. The produce was fresh and there was a great variety for a small store. This store is a great solution for either the drudgery of trekking through the megalo-mart supermarkets or the time consuming and physically taxing (for an American anyway) requirement of shopping at multiple stores. WHEN I return for another lovely holiday in Saumur, this will be my go-to place for every day grocery shopping. I'll still visit the Saturday markets in the center of Saumur because that is an experience regardless of whether shopping for food or not!
