La Verniaz

La Verniaz

La Verniaz review:…read more This review is in both French and English: Après sa vente à une société qatari en 2014, l'établissement a connu des années de catastrophe. Why do we love this hotel? We've gone here for many years, and except for a three-year "blip" when it was owned by a corporation--now happily over--La Verniaz has consistently delighted its guests.   1. Space.  We never feel crowded here.  This is one of the things that makes us feel most at home.  The dining rooms, guest rooms, pool and cottages are spread out over two hectares (nearly five acres).  The rooms are spacious, and most of them have large balconies.  There's a large garden to relax and read under the plane trees.  In the dining room, the tables are placed far conversations remain private.  2. Location.  Overlooking the milky blue of Lac Leman, the hotel is surrounded by pastures and old properties bordered by chestnut trees.  It's not unusual to see riders on horseback on the country roads.  Nearby, a century-old cog railway (recently refurbished) leads down to the spa town of Evian and to its many attractions: the Thermes; the Casino; the Palais Lumière, now a museum; shops, and a theatre.  Above the hotel, the Plateau du Gavot and the foothills of the Alps are perfect for hiking.  On the first Sunday of August, peasants in traditional dress, from all over the region, parade in the "Gavotine" in nearby St. Paul. For international travellers, La Verniaz is located about an hour from the Geneva airport.  From the New York area, there are several flights daily.  Note: Getting back to the airport can be tricky, as the Swiss signs are very inconsistent; allow plenty of extra time, or spend the last night near the airport.   And also: The Geneva airport has two sectors, the main Swiss one and a much smaller French one.  Be sure to check which sector your flight departs from; otherwise it can be disastrous! 3. Romance.  With its garden setting, balconies, and romantic restaurant, La Verniaz is long on charm. The rooms have been renovated to combine tradition with a more modern vibe.  The tiled baths are large, some with both a tub and a stall shower.   The place has lost none of its romance.  4. Fine dining.  Even if you don't stay here, the cuisine is once again first rate.  For guests of the hotel, demi pension can be arranged (they require a day or two advance notice).  We were consistently delighted with the offerings.    5. Families.  With its country setting, spaciousness, relaxed atmosphere, swimming pool (protected by a fence), proximity to the Plateau and to Evian, La Verniaz is perfect for families.   6. Older travellers.  And yet, long after the children have left for summer camp, or even for the university, La Verniaz continues to call us back.  We are among the couples who return each year, sometimes for several weeks.  What we love most is what the French call "détente": the opportunity to relax and unwind completely after a long and busy year.

This to me seemed less like a hotel then a B&B. The room is nothing like you would find in America,…read morethe layout is old fashioned and thing that stood out the most to me was the way you can actually open the window here ( in the states most hotel rooms you cannot open the window) I do agree with the other poster about the way the room cleaning people act is weird. I had a lady open my door without knocking as well. The breakfast I was zero impressed about. I'm a vegetarian and unless you eat pastries for all 3 meals it is kinda hard to get food around here. We paid 16.00 for a breakfast ( my husband and I) that we both only ate a croissant and my husband ate a piece of cheese. But overall the man who runs the front desk was so nice and accommodating that when we come back we might stay again.

We chose this hotel to have stop in between our trip from Italy to home (in The Netherlands). The…read morehotel itself is a cozy and in the middle of the shopping/restaurant street. The bed itself is very comfortable, although the pillows are way too soft and provide no support at all. Breakfast was reasonably good as can be expected in France, there was enough choice and the quality was good as well. From croissants to yoghurt, although we didn't find any fresh fruit unfortunately. Strange thing was that dogs were allowed, as one guest couple took their chihuahua into the breakfast room. To me this is not very hygienic and it should not be allowed. Within the room we encountered quite a lot of issues, some of which you can expect for a two star hotel, but some were even for a two star hotel in this price range bad. The shower cabin was of a reasonable size, but the toilet was put into a corner and you literally have no room to spare when you go to the toilet. We also did not find a "do not disturb" sign anywhere and on our second day we came back for some stuff at around 16:00 hours when the room was cleaned already, but even though someone tried to enter the room without knocking first. We had no idea why. The room itself had a very crooked floor and the tables at one side of the room were standing literally 10cm off the wall on top while the feet were placed against the wall. To us this was kind of scary, because sometimes you would stand on a part of the floor where you had the feeling to almost fall over. The whole hotel is also very noisy with extremely bad isolation. You could hear the elevator and people chatting across the hall. People walking in their room, whether it was above our room or next to it, was also very noisy. The bathroom cannot be locked, which was no issue for us, but it can be for some people. As a last thing I noticed the curtains do not close well at all. We had to use our suitcase in order to block incoming street lights. The personnel is very rude and if you ask them anything they immediately think you are blaming them and starting to react as if it is our fault. An example was that nowhere it is said where to park and that the hotel is badly accessible by car, which is why we were looking for quite a while to find a suitable spot to park our car (temporarily). The Wi-Fi connection was very instable, my iPad constantly lost the connection. All in all it was less than a two star hotel experience and we would not recommend this.
