Warning Photographers:
My experience with Lens Work Studio this weekend.
Short version: Booked a studio and paid in advance for a paid client and hired a makeup artist just to find that the studio is locked and the studio owner is out of town. Lost the client, had to pay my makeup artist out of my own pocket.
Long version: I booked a big client and she wanted corporate headshots. I was hoping to get more work out of her company after the shoot as I was planning this shoot for over 15 days now. I hired a makeup artist for the shoot as well.
30 minutes before the shoot, I messaged Len (the owner of the studio) to remind him of the shoot. I got no reply back and I got busy packing my gear and making sure I don't forget anything. I've shot at his studio twice before this and he is always the guy who reads the message but doesn't really reply back instantly.
I reached the studio and so did the client and makeup artist just to find the studio locked. After a few attempts at calling him, he picked up and said that it's an emergency and he can come to the studio one hour later. Obviously, I had to cancel the shoot, pay the makeup artist, and lost the client.
After that, I talked to Len on phone and told him what happened. His tone was more like 'shit happens'. I told him about the contract and the money that I lost and he offered me the damage in studio credit. Just to make sure that he holds his end of the deal, I put it in writing and sent him a message. I got a reply today that he can offer half.
The point of all this is not how much money I can recover out of this. Any business, including photography, is based on relationships and networking. I do not want to work with someone whom I can't rely on. That client is never working with me again. We all have emergencies and just a message even an hour before the shoot would've allowed me to make a few calls and find another studio. If he had the time to drive an hour out of town, I assume he had time to make a 30-second phone call. And if even that's not possible, the least he could do is stand by what he offered and made sure that he doesn't lose a regular customer. read more
