I have been a patron at Lehja since it first opened, but something over the past year has gone downhill. I have gotten the Malvani goat every single time I've come in. The past 2 times, I noticed that the meat:bone ratio was a bit off. So much bone and very little meat. Well tonight I got it to go and I can honestly say there was one medium sized chunk of meat in the whole dish. The rest was bone. These were very large bones that someone had to notice when they were preparing the food. Was the dish good? Yes of course. Was it worth $19? Absolutely not, especially when you have to split one medium chunk of meat between two people. Also, I ordered Garlic Naan, which I've gotten every time I've come in too. I asked for extra raita because I love it most time. They said it doesn't typically come with raita (untrue?) but they could add an order. I agreed. Had I known a small container of yogurt sauce was going to add $5 to my bill, I would have declined. I always considered this to be one of my favorite places in Richmond, but tonight ruined that for me. read more

I have heard so many good things about the food, that I could not wait to try it. We ordered so many items to share and everything was delicious. We shared the Chaat Du Jour, Deconstructed Butter Chicken, Duck Salli Boti, Lamb Briyani. All of the meat was ridiculously tender and all the flavors of the sauces were perfect compliments. I will definitely be back. The service was probably the best that I have experienced in a very long time. Everyone was so helpful and were quick with refills and checking on us. I tend to post either the food is superb or miserable; tonight it is the other end of the spectrum. Ordered a evening take out of saag paneer and asked for mild spicy; not only I can't taste any spicy the food itself is real Bland, and how could you not supply plastic silverware for takeouts? For a $15 dish, there are barely any paneers, the saag also does not taste creamy; all I taste is oily grease. Total disappointment, and yes I had to use hotel spoons. read more

When you move to RVA and everyone tells you the best Indian food is at the mall in short pump, it's easy to be skeptical. BUT IT'S TRUE!! We got several appetizers and 3 entrees for the family. Every single thing was DELICIOUSSSSSSS. I love that there are so many vegetarian choices. Their garlic naan is TDF. In a time when restaurants are struggling to find and retain staff, Lehja kind of stands alone. Our server and the manager (maybe owner?) were so kind and accommodating. (The manager just came over to say "hi" and chat about our meal. He stopped at most of the tables.) Everyone at Lehja from the host to the server to the kitchen folks were INCREDIBLY NICE. It's been a while since I've been in a restaurant where the staff didn't seem incredibly stressed out. The waiter I had asked a bunch of questions and then made a suggestion. While trying to suggest an item for someone he had never met before, I went with the entree that he suggested. Loved this place! I had the Duck a la Pondicherry and my boyfriend had the Delhi Ishtyle Chicken Curry. We shared an order of the Coconut Curry Scallops and garlic naan. Everything was delicious. The duck is a must have if you plan to go here. The service was great and the owner came and spoke with us about the restaurant and about how they try to locally source all their ingredients. The butter chicken was what I imagined the perfect butter chicken dish should be. They used dark meat and it was juicy and plentiful. The seafood curry tasted delicious. It was creamy but not in a milkyish way. The portion of this dish was a little disappointing for the $$$. Felt like I paid $5 for each scallop and shrimp. Spice level is 1 to 5 and we picked 4. Perfect bite and kick to it. Service was wonderful. Chef came out and asked if we enjoyed our meal. Very friendly staff. Overall good meal experience. First time here last night! I went on a date night with my BF and my boss told me this place was the best Indian food in RVA, so I had to try it. She was right! Everything I ordered was very tasty and tasted authentic. Appetizers: I ordered the Chaat Du Jour. Its their version of chaat papri. I loved it! Perfect amount of spice and heat in it. Entrees: My BF had no idea what to order so I helped him because there menu is really big. I ordered the Lamb vin d'lo for him. It was SO GOOD! It was super spicy though, so if you don't like heat, don't order it. It also comes with white rice pulao. For my entree, I ordered the lamb briyani. Mine was really delicious too! My lamb was cooked perfectly, so nice and tender. Mine also comes with a yogurt cucumber sauce that was really good. We also ordered Naan, which I recommend because it came out nice and hot. We also decided to order dessert, the Kulfi. It's like a pistachio ice cream that was really good! The atmosphere is very dark, more intimate which I liked for a date night. I honestly wasn't expecting the restaurant to be so nice inside! I yelled out "wow" as I walked in. Located near short pump mall (near Firebird/Hyatt/CPK), Lehja is an Indian restaurant that serves solid indian food. Friendly staff, classy ambience, clean and spacious... with such mediocre dining options available at the short pump mall, Lehja is a god-send. Our eyes are bigger than our stomachs, so we ordered a ton of dishes to try: Appetizers + spinach chaat: melt-in-your-mouth without being greasy. we wondered how this was cooked... airfry? it was delicious, but we thought it lacked some substance. addition of chickpeas and/or potatoes may be a good idea, along with more yogurt sauce. I would like to try their papri chaat next time. + cauliflower: another appetizer that hit the ball out of the park. meaty cauliflower hiding in perfectly fried breading, with tangy tomato sauce. it paired well with spinach chaat.. I would get this again. Entree (around ~$17-19) + chicken handi: off the menu item that was recommended to us. those who enjoy chicken tikka masala who want to venture off to items they haven't tried before would enjoy this. tangy tomato sauce, not as creamy as masala or butter chicken, but good nonetheless. + paneer-asparagus lazzatdar: I had never tried paneer with asparagus before. the yellow curry was flavorful but I felt that there was too much going on. quality of the paneer was great. next time I would stick with my favorite (saag paneer). - kokani prawns: the curry itself was flavorful, but I wished it had been thicker. the consistency was more watery, closer to daal. very big and fresh prawns which was delightful. Desserts + neapolitan kulfi: rose-petal, pistachio and mango. as soon as I heard this I knew I had to get it. very creamy and delicious.. especially the mango, it had real fruit bits in it. + strawberry rasmalai: cottage cream dessert that is served with strawberry creme puree on the side. heavy notes of cardamom and nuts. the consistency may not be something you're used to, but give it a try anyway. all this food came out to around $35/pp. Our waiter was the nicest VCU student who walked us through his favorites and recommended even some items off the menu. The owner/manager walked around and interacted with customers at each table as well. The waitstaff in general were very nice but almost too eager at times, asking us several times during the meal whether we were finished when we were hoping to enjoy our meal slowly haha. It is definitely pricier than your typical Indian delivery joint, but I don't think it's fair to compare Lehja to your favorite neighborhood chicken tikka masala place. Overall, very happy with my experience and I will be back to try some more items off the menu. read more

Loved this place the first time I came here. However, this week the experience was terrible. Here's why: 1. Service - All they care about is non Indian guests. So if you are India, they would give you the darkest corner where no one wants to sit. The owner would be going around asking every table how they find the food, but not come to you because apparently you are Indian. Pheww!! 2. Food - The food is super salty. Chat was pathetic. The anjeer based gravy and dal lehja were disappointing too. Could not eat anything. When we asked them to pack the stuff for takeaway, we realized that half of the stuff was missing. This was the fanciest Indian restaurant I've ever dined at! The inside was so hip, so modern! The colorful lights and decorations made it almost club-like in some ways. Granted, it was a little dark for my taste, and the very yellow light illuminating our table gave everything an off-color hue. For the prices that Lehja charges, the portions are medium. Entrees do come with rice though. The tableware and utensils were notable (I especially found it intriguing how the knife "stood up" instead of laying flat; you have to see it to understand). I thought the dishes that the food came served in were very sleek and modern too. Everything was white. However, all of the food was DELICIOUS! I am not usually a big lamb person, but the lamb in Khoya Malai Lamb was unbelievably tender! All of the other dishes were tasty too. We ordered Saag Paneer, Eggplant Bhartha, and Chicken Tikka Masala, then shared everything family-style. The eggplant was the spiciest dish, but overall, I didn't find any of the dishes particularly spicy, even though we chose "Medium" on the hotness scale. We also ordered a Naan Basket, which came with four slices each of three different kinds of naan (regular, garlic, and stuffed). The one thing that was very unusual about our meal was the service. Our server wasn't unfriendly per se, as he checked on us frequently during the meal. However, he kept asking if we were ready to order (three times in the span of about five minutes). He also kept insisting on offering us drink orders ("Are you SURE you don't want a beverage? How about Italian Soda? We have flavors x, y, and z. Mango lassi?"). He asked about appetizers too. My friends and I got the impression that he wanted us to order more, which made him seem kind of pushy. One of my dining companions said he was borderline rude; I don't know that I would go that far, but I will say that it was one of the strangest waiter experiences I've ever had. The restaurant was fairly empty with only a few other groups, although it is admittedly a large restaurant and it was a Wednesday night. Ordered food to go for first time and sat at bar to have a drink while I waited. It was 6pm'ish which is usually happy hour. One glass of Cabernet was $12 which I thought was pricey. After I ordered my food, the gentleman helping me asked if I wanted more wine, I asked how much it cost. He told me and I gave a polite "no thank you"... (I had an $18 bottle at home lol) He picked up on my attitude and gave me a complimentary sample, so I was already happy. The food is amazing!!! I got home and opened my bottle, sat down and dig in. Although it was little pricey, I enjoyed my brief time at the bar and really liked the service. Whenever I'm in the mood for Indian, this will be my go to spot! It sounds like it should be a juxtaposition on many levels: a GOOD INDIAN restaurant in a MALL with REASONABLE PRICES, FRESH INGREDIENTS and FRIENDLY PEOPLE? While it shouldn't be, it is. We celebrated my Grandma's birthday by hitting up weekend brunch and taking advantage of their spectacular $20 for three courses and a drink deal. Apparently the portions are smaller than normal, which makes sense, but we didn't notice and left with leftovers. Must call out the fact that several members of my party have dietary restrictions - I'm a pescatarian and my partner is lactose free. They went out of their way to find options for Brian, customizing a menu for him so he had choices. Typically with prix fixe, you get what you get. He went with the Shrimp Curry by the way, and if you have the chance, you should too. Another standout was the salmon fried with ginger and garlic. Normally I find fried food to be heavy, but this wasn't. It was perfect. Also, props to the owner for coming over and chatting us up. He had no clue who we were, yet was still gracious and friendly. And when he found out it was my grandma's birthday, he had an amazing dessert delivered to the table -- Street food ice cream infused with saffron, pistachio and smoked bacon which just won an state award for its creativity, innovation and taste. First off I'll say that the service is usually always hit and miss. Not terrible enough to where you'd never come back here again, but not good enough to where you feel bad for leaving a 9% tip. It's like this, even on their best day. The food, though pricey is usually delicious enough to have you coming back for more (my ATF anyways). Overall they use fresh, quality ingredients, the curries are robust and full of flavor, and most importantly they're consistent. This last visit though, was such a disappointment. I know we have a pandemic going on, but when you pay nearly $30 for 1 item. You'd expect it to be at least 3/4 as good as when you'd dine in. I ordered the Crab-Scallop Meljol, normally it's perfect. Creamy, tomato-y, savory, buttery curry, perfectly cooked scallops, giant chunks of crab. I'm getting hungry just writing about it, about how I remembered it anyway. But this last time I ordered, which was fairly early btw, before the "dinner rush" anyway...it was hands down the worst Indian food I've had in RVA. You'd think after spending nearly $30 on 1 dish they'd at least make it decent. What I got was basically, sour tomato curry, with 2 tiny rubbery bottom of the barrel scallops, and the chunks of crab was non existent. It may as well have been called "rubbery Walmart scallops in spoiled tomato curry Meljol". I honestly think they gave me leftovers, yeah it was honestly that bad. Straight garbage. Oh well I'll probably be back, hopefully it'll be at least close to how I remember it, at least I can always count on their subpar wait staff, who consistently ignore us, until the manager has to take over and provide actual friendly service. On a serious note, we're out here during a Pandemic spending our hard earn cash, when people are losing their jobs in record numbers and business are closing down "permanently". If we're out here trying to help local establishments, the least they can do is provide some sort of quality in their food. When places like this, give me the impression that they're being cheap, underhanded, selfish, trying to save a buck by selling me garbage, it makes me not want to help out local establishments during this time of need. If you're hankering for some indian food, don't feel bad if you decide to skip Lejha until after the lockdown. Unless you want to risk spending $$$ on un-inspired cuisine. There's a lot of other Indian restaurants who charge significantly less/ fairer prices and the food is just as delicious, if not better. To be honest I only come here for the Crab-Scallop MelJol, because no one else has it. Anokha is pretty terrific and it's close by short pump mall, and normally from what I remember cheaper. Also there's an authentic place a lot of Indians go to inside of an Exxon Mobil gas station off of Nuckols Road. They have hands down the best Goat Curry I've had around here. Seriously though if they're not going to be grateful for the patronage during this pandemic ...give it to someone else who will. Especially with those ludicrous prices they charge. read more

The gentleman who answered the phone was very helpful in guiding me to some great choices. I walked next-door to pick up the food, the gentleman introduced himself and we had a laugh or two. I was really impressed with Lehja. Everything from the decor, the food, and of course the staff was perfect! Atmosphere/Decor/Vibe: This place was pretty classy! I love all the beads and the different textured art on the walls and even the ceiling. The lighting was intimate and the vibe was great! The Food: Delectable! One of the best Indian restaurants I have ever been to. Each dish was flavorful and bold. It was less than $50 for my fiancé and I to enjoy two drinks, one appetizer, and two entrees with garlic naan! I was impressed! I have visited Lehja three times in the last month or so. It is a charming, modern restaurant with fabulous food. During my most recent visit, a "date night with myself," I arrived alone and was seated at a booth. The service is uniformly prompt, courteous and efficient. The restaurant's owner is frequently out mixing with the patrons, taking orders, giving direction to the staff. That always impresses me, and he always takes the time to stop by each table to check and see if anything is needed. Lots of attention to details. I ordered a mango-lime gimlet and a starter of samosas, which are served with traditional tamarind sauce, perfectly sweet, tart and plummy. In addition to the owner, I had at least three other wait staff assisting at my table. The waiter who took my dinner order talked me into trying butter chicken instead of my usual go-to, chicken tikka masala. The latter is, at least at Lehja, a masterpiece of simplicity and perfection for this traditional dish. Savory, rich, deeply satisfying. He described the butter chicken as tikka masala's little sister, and ... he was right on the money. I loved every bite with its tender chicken pieces and silky tomato sauce. But I still mourned over the tikka masala. Sides of rice and naan were simple and perfect. The sweet and tangy mango gimlet was a perfect accompaniment. Such a beautiful, romantic spot and fantastic fare. One mixed drink, appetizer, entree and naan totaled about $41. It's a bit pricey, but ... worth every penny. read more

Ordered takeout from Lehja during covid lockdown and I got the kebab medley spicy and it wasn't really spicy. Should have gotten Indian spicy but I digress. The food was pretty good. My medley had salmon, chicken, one shrimp and lamb. Lots of food, very filling. I think the dining experience will be elevated with this type of food when you actually get to dine in again. Presentation and service are paramount for many restaurants and Lehja is no exception. I'd say it was 3.5 stars but I bet I'd give it 5 if I was able to dine here for sit down service. It took a little longer than expected to be greeted but we were served waters right away and soon our drink order was taken. All moved along well most of the time, but there were long lags between visits from our server resulting in no water to drink and food getting cold while waiting for more rice, etc... Spent 4.5 hours on the road to meet a colleague here for dinner. I haven't had Indian food in a very long time. The owner stopped by and made the entree recommendations for 3 of us. He told some great stories about how the restaurant has changed and his disagreements with his family on why this restaurant should be different from traditional Indian places. We had a couple items not on the menu including: Lamb Rara Curry Lamb Kozhambhu We had Naan, Chaat and Malai Kab for appetizers. I like my food medium and this was perfect. The sauces were perfect. Nice and smooth going down with some heat that slowly builds. Perfect. The lamb was so tender. The place is beautiful. Looks nothing like a traditional Indian restaurant. It's not intimidating which is one of the reasons I don't frequent Indian restaurants. There is no strong smell when you walk in and my clothes don't have a strong smell when I leave.
