Located on the outskirts of historic Jim Thorpe, this county park is perfect for a family getaway…read more Mauch Chunk Lake is about 115 miles from New York City and about 85 miles from Philadelphia. Swimming is one of the most popular activities, but one can only do it while lifeguards are on duty. On the beach, visitors can enjoy access to play equipment for children, a food and refreshment stand, and a beach pavilion. However, as parking can be limited in Jim Thorpe on weekends, one could arrive early to secure a spot; otherwise, use one of the pre-paid reserved parkings at $26, including the parking fee and 2 round-trip tickets every Saturday and Sunday throughout October. A shuttle bus begins from this park at 10 a.m. and runs every 10-15 minutes to the Opera House, which my partner, his aunt and I did last Saturday while attending their popular Fall Foliage Festival.

They have two bath houses, both of which are at least as clean as one can expect from a camp bath house. The minor negatives: the showers and sinks require one hand on the spigot at all times to keep water going, the picnic tables are chained in place because I guess they got sick of campers moving them around. The cost to park a third vehicle in what looks to be a fairly empty lot. The major negatives: the gentleman at the front desk, when asked a simple question about unchaining a table, basically blew me off and even though we'd been told it wouldn't be a problem, said it wouldn't happen. The showers have zero privacy when one is dressing. They have an alcove, but a 2nd curtain or door would be good. Overall a decent experience, but an experience that would likely be better elsewhere.

You have to take a short detour off of either W Broadway or Beaver Run Dr. to Flagstaff Rd. There are signs you can follow all the way up there, on a one way dirt path 1,000 feet above the town, and only 3 miles away from it. We went around 4pm in November, when the sun was blending beautifully with the clouds. The panoramic view is insanely stunning! According to discovernepa.com : "Facing south, you'll take in a breathtaking look at the expansive Mahoning Valley and the rolling Pocono foothills. To the north, the overlook offers a stunning bird's-eye view of Jim Thorpe itself, nestled at the base of the mountains and bordered by the scenic curves of the Lehigh River." We took some pictures, walked around to take the views in. We noticed there is a development in process, so depending how long the construction will take place - I imagine the overlook might get more crowded, or the area more restricted. There is a picnic bench you can sit down at. And apparently there is also a camp site. Just imagine drinking your morning coffee with this view! Definitely will be visiting again when we're in the neighborhood.

Anyway I had a fabulous time. Read on for more por favor. My commentary is about the HIKING - nothing more nothing less. We had a tri-chapter meetup with my peeps from Body Liberation Outdoor Club - Northern NJ, Hudson Valley, and Eastern PA. Btdubs, if you're looking to enjoy the outdoors in an affirming space, holler at me. Anyway, we met at the Christman, Falls, and Cove Ridge trailhead and hiked a substantial loop to the falls, the Pohopoco river(?), and in and out of the woods. It was fantastic! Some nice elevation, soft packed trails, not too much mud, leafy forest bed, and as is common on the east coast - some roots and rocks to make sure you're paying attention. 5 miles of glorious spring sunshine and whispering trees. Couldn't ask for more! You Should Know: -parking at this trailhead is safe - room for about 8 or 9 cars and directly across from houses -this trail is NOT accessible -some parts of the trail sit high above the river - watch your step or else you'll take a devastating tumble to the great beyond -about 3/4 mile grassy walk to the actual trail from the parking area -If you use All Trails app, it was surprisingly accurate IYKYK - no bathrooms anywhere near here - pack in and pack out
