We showed up here less than two weeks before our wedding to figure out a dance for the big day…read more More so to make sure we knew what we were doing - we honestly didn't think they'd help us choreograph something specific on this short notice. They got right to work. We got 4 lessons scheduled in the two weeks pre-wedding and they helped us execute a pretty flawless (if I do say so) first dance for our wedding. Super kind staff make it very easy and then help you drill in to make it perfect. Highly recommend these folks.

I went here with a groupon, which came with one group lesson and two private lessons. I scheduled…read morethe group lesson over the phone and was instructed not to wear tennis shoes or rubber soles. They also had a 24 hour cancellation notice. Note to people with groupons - ALL of your lessons must be used up before the groupon expires, not just the first lesson. The group lesson was 30-45 minutes long. There were about 6-8 couples and 2-3 single ladies. The instructor introduced us to a few basic steps and had us practice them, rotating partners. Instead of holding hands, everyone touched palms as if frozen while playing pat-a-cake. This weirded me out a bit because I realized I had not touched anyone's palms (boyfriend excluded) in years... hahaha. But I will admit that changing partners was helpful for practicing, especially since the instructor did the man's steps, so we ladies got to practice with the instructor several times. We did the box steps for waltz, rumba, and foxtrot. After the group lesson, you could schedule your two private lessons. Each person/couple also received a sheet where we could note the steps we had learned and which instructor we had; Arthur Murray then keeps this on file. We ended up scheduling our two private lessons back to back, as they were 20-30 minutes each. In the private lessons, we reviewed the steps from the group lesson and learned how to turn and how to place our hands/arms so that we looked more like we were actually dancing and not that pat-a-cake thing. We were then given information on signing up for the real classes and were also invited to join a practice ballroom session where people just show up and dance, with instructors roaming around and helping. I think this might have been included in the groupon. We weren't able to fit the practice ballroom session into our schedule, so we ended up skipping it. I wanted to sign up for classes, but they were kind of pricey. I would definitely need a lot more classes/practice because I have two left feet and also a terrible memory. I get better each time in class, but then I forget the steps so quickly. :( The dance studio is located on Main, north of 11 Mile, across the street from Hollywood Market (and slightly north of it). If you are coming from the north, the building is really hard to see because the Arthur Murray sign only faces south, so get ready to turn right when you see the used car dealership. It's just after the dealership, and it's a brown brick building with a brown roof. For the longest time, they did not have a website, but now they do... finally!

Oh my goodness... fell in love with this place tonight!…read more I have been fruitlessly searching for a quality Hip Hop class for a long time now ... each time I would sign up for one it ended up being cancelled bc not enough people registered. Finally... I FOUND A CLASS and it is a fantastic studio that I HIGHLY recommend. Dance Theatre Studio is right in the heart of U of M's campus. It is a second story location above Moe's sporting goods store. Great walkable area if you want to grab a bite or a drink after classes. It is a narrow spot and it was very very crowded in the waiting area, yet it is truly a wonderful space! They have an office in the sort of attic upstairs, and the man who I think owns the place is so so sweet- his name is John. He was helpful, and kind, and very endearing. There are 3 studio spaces A, B, and C. There are also small changing areas for men and women. Studios A and B are larger- C is a smaller space. They offer so many classes here .... Zumba, Cardio Barre, Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, Pilates, Body Sculpting,Tap ...for ALL different skill levels and ages. I personally am taking a Hip Hop class and I can't wait to continue classes here for years to come.It is a very well organized studio and it has a really helpful and easy website which I appreciate. My first class was SO fun !!! The instructor was not only a talented dancer and teacher - she was great at amping up the energy of the class and making everyone comfortable. Class starts out with a warm up - including crunches, plank, push ups. We learned great choreography to fun music and then cooled down and stretched. I'm so thrilled to have discovered this place... if you've ever thought about taking dance you should totally try it !!!!!

I'm a modern dancer without a lot of jazz experience, so I was a little worried about jumping into an intermediate class at a studio I wasn't familiar with, but everyone was super welcoming. The class was fast-paced and mostly regulars. I would be cautious of coming to this particular class if you don't have some experience, because I could see it being frustrating. Michelle didn't take a lot of time to offer corrections and taught the choreography quickly, but not too quickly for the class -- everyone was at least getting a sketch of it, but everyone also seemed challenged by it (I was!). She seemed to have a good sense of what parts were difficult for the class in the moment. She also picked some rad music. I would totally go back if I lived here!

Only good if you have money and have been there a long time…read more.. the place is firstly, expensive. Tuition for SELECT is 200+ a MONTH!!! For two days a week! All of the costumes- 100 each, makeup and hair- 100, shoes- 200!!! The Fusion dance camp costs are well into 1000 for one week, and are MANDATORY for those competing!! We haven't even gotten to fees! For those unfamiliar, it is a family studio, everyone has know everyone forever! As someone new, I felt embarrassed and out of place completely! The people talk behind your back and even had issues where people had to step in..... The place is LOUD and unless you went in person to the place, the schedules online are super confusing!!! The teachers placed top priority on the students THEY liked, aka, who's there longest and who dances the best. I barely improved and learned being there for a year, I learned more watching YouTube videos and had better flexibility stretching on my own. Classes are slow and teachers talk super quietly in class yet scream when they are outside! It is a beautiful studio and a wonderful place, but the people! AGHHHH! I was stuck in the back to walk and pose for my jazz, tap, lyrical and hip hop numbers. The only place I felt truly challenged was Mr.Kevins ballet and Mr.Pauls Acro classes. And don't think your getting all the best choreography. Maddie Ziegler at 8 years old could perform the teen girls (14/15) jazz, over pass the lyrical and tap, EASILY. Those top choreographers? Yeah, only the top get them. The 17 year olds who are the most advanced and have been there the longest or the families that pay the most! I would have gone anywhere else or started earlier or just take tech, ballet and Acro. Watch out!

My issue, however, is with the abhorrent waiting area & lobby. With as many families and children who enter and exit the building, there is zero excuse not to have built a larger more accommodating front lobby. Kids and teens kick off their shoes and leave them EVERYWHERE while the lack of seating forces some parents to wait in the car (keep in mind, there is only curbside parking unless you leave your vehicle across the road in a CVS lot). I wish they could knock out a wall, reduce the size of the main studio or figure something out. Again, not much thought was put in to this aspect of the facility. While I stress that the actual instruction is outstanding, there is very little organization when it comes to ushering students aged 3-6 in & out of their lesson. This age requires guidance and direction, but in between classes is a free-for-all. Instructors should retrieve, line up and lead their students into whichever area they're heading to. Given the aforementioned situation with the waiting area, it'd be a huge help in reducing some of that front lobby chaos. Ms. Pat is incredibly knowledgeable, kind hearted and direct with both her staff and the families who attend. It's a great studio, especially for first timer little ones and I recommend DDA to anyone seeking options for dance. Just be aware of the surrounding factors listed above and you won't be as surprised/frustrated as I've seen some parents be.

My girls have been dancing at the studio for the last 4 years and I cannot imagine taking them anywhere else. Every single instructor is wonderful. They create such a welcoming and caring bond with the kids. My girls can seriously not get enough. If they could be at the studio every day they would! Jazz. Hip Hop. Tap. Competitive. Non-competitive. Technique. They have it all. The studio also brings in guest instructors for Master Classes. Last year one of teachers was from the cast of Hamilton and taught the kids choreography from the show. How awesome is that. The owner Amy is just so great. She truly cares for every single one of her dancers. Not only does the studio put on fabulous recitals (they are super fast paced and not too long!!!) but they also put on a charity show every year (the charity is typically picked by the Company team kids - which I think is awesome).
