Of all the restaurants/pubs that Gayle and I visited during our recent trip to Ireland, our Lunch at this Left Bank had the best burger and Craic (fun, good times, enjoyable conversation, and the social atmosphere of a lively gathering). It also brought back fond memories of one of our early dates at a Left Bank in Pleasant Hill CA, when Gayle put me to the test. :) p.s. - I'm still around after 20 years. Our tour had just arrived in Kilkenny and as we walked down through the Food Festival (it was also a Bank Holiday), we needed to find a bank to replenish our cash reserve for tips and such. As we were Downtown, that was easy to accomplish. After that, I asked Gayle if she wanted to eat at the food festival or sit down somewhere. She opted for the latter, and Left Bank was right there! The place was packed and with great happy Bank Holiday energy, but the nice guy greeting us suggested we walk around and see if we could find an empty table. After about 5 minutes of searching, we spied a couple just leaving at a table by the window and we grabbed it. We were served quickly by an observant wait person, and before we knew it, my Chicken BLT and Gayle's Burger were right there. My choice was very good, and Gayle's burger was amazing. My adult beverage of choice was a Smithwicks, while Gayle stuck to her go-to Chardonnay choice (but with a burger?). Then as we're enjoying our Lunch, we look out the window and there's our friends Don and Fern walking down the food festival street! Gayle quickly left to chase them down, and with enough room at the table, the more the merrier! If we weren't on the tour clock, I would have gone another round. But alas, all good things....and doing a mitzvah by leading another couple looking for table to ours as we left. read more

I'm from the states so the Guinness in Ireland is absolutely something you should have while out here in IE. Kilkenny castle is a walk away from this place. Nice live jazz music covers with proper sound leveling and solid claim chowder and fish and chips done right here. Great place whether you're in the older crew or a college student to bring here and have a pint. Friendly locals, and the corner is at a cross street lets you people watch when positioned at the window. It definitely not a dive bar but you don't need a collared shirt to enjoy it read more

We decided to try Left Bank as it was time for a break from standard pub grub. The restaurant is very stylish and quirky - the decor is funky yet sublime. My wife and I both ordered the rotisserie half chicken. It was actually very tasty and cooked to perfection. We both enjoyed the Caesar salad as it wasn't over-dressed. The atmosphere was special and the service was polite and professional and helpful. We ordered from the bar menu. I had very good fish and chips (they call it beer battered catch of the day). Most thrilling to me was Guinness 0.0 ON TAP. It was sooo much better than I can get at home in cans. My partner did even better with a hake and polenta dish that was served on top of and surrounded by incredible vegetables. It was gluten free. The desserts were a wonderful climax, especially the (gluten free) creme brulee. Even though Kilkenny is a tourist destination, we paid about the same as we would at home for a very nice dinner out. We checked their restaurant menu and it seemed that main courses start about €10 higher. We didn't eat there; perhaps it's that much more special. read more

I went here for lunch, and the server spilled soup all over me. I burnt my hand and the soup spilled all over my skirt, shirt, and jacket. The server brought me ice for my hand, and I never saw the server nor did anyone check on me. We had to ask for our check. We paid and left. I am shocked no one checked on me. 90 minutes later, my hand is red, and hurt when I tried to wash it. Thank god, I asked for ice. read more

We tried the calamari rings, the halloumi salad, and sticky wings for appetizers. The were all good, and the calamari was very tender. For mains, we tried the steak sandwich, which was very good, the pork ribs, the signature burger, and the fish and chips. All were pretty good, but pretty standard, except the steak sandwich was better than the rest. The service was excellent and very attentive, especially considering we had a large group. All the drinks from the bar were also very good. I also really liked the atmosphere and decor of the bar. I think you can't go wrong trying this restaurant if you're visiting the area. read more

We had spent the afternoon at the Castle up the street. The stop in the Left Bank for some food and drinks was great. It doesn't look that big from the outside but this place has a lot of space. There are many different books and crannies and bars within the bar. We had a couple of great rounds. We also had some delicious fish and chips . This place has a wide mix of visitors off all ages. I can only assume that it tends a little younger as the evening wears on. There seemed to be a fair amount of locals having a couple of pints and little snacks in the afternoons. I also assume a good bit of tourists including me obviously since it is so close to the Kilkenny Castle. read more

The Left Bank is definitely a bar rather than a pub, but it isn't too bar-ish for those of us that prefer pubs (one of the ways that you can tell it's a bar is that it's bathed in red light. Stylish!). Left Bank would be a very good spot to go if you were on a date with a lovely young lady (as I was). One thing that could put me off, though: a lot of the seating was tables and high stools, and I don't like to sit with my feet not touching the ground. It's just a thing, I mean you can't be properly relaxed if you can't put your feet on the ground or lean back, can you? Anyway, we were on one of the fairly numerous leather couches, so it wasn't really an issue. One drawback of Left Bank is the toilets. It's not that they are unsanitary or anything (I couldn't tell you; I've never been), just their accessibility. My companion for the evening excused herself, and didn't return for the better part of 20 minutes. I'm sure that a great many of you will be able to relate to this, but I'm always unsure of what to do while waiting for a girl to return from the bathroom and/or a cigarette. Take out your phone and mess around with it, observe the decor, etc. When the young lady in question returned, she was all apologies, explaining that you had to get a freakin' lift and go through some warren of rooms in order to spend a penny. We were leaving shortly after, and even though I could have used a tinkle, I wasn't going to risk becoming lost along the tortuous journey and leaving this poor unfortunate girl stranded in the wilds of Kilkenny, so I tied a mental knot and we proceeded on to the next stop along our itinerary. Never have I had such a horrific experience with bouncers on a night out, I was with my friends at the bar in the nightclub when two bouncers (a male and a female) cornered me and told me they wanted to speak to me. When I asked why they said it was over my behaviour the last night I was in there. Which I was not at fault for, a girl started an argument with myself and I defended myself in the situation. The bouncers told me repeatedly I wasn't welcome in left bank and that I'm always starting trouble, this is an absolute lie as I've been going there for years and the only incident was the last night I was in there, I also had a problem with the bouncers another night in which the manager actually called me to meet face to face and apologised on behalf of the bouncers behaviour as it was totally uncalled for. The bouncers also wouldn't let me get a word in and kept calling me aggressive which I wasn't. The male bouncer then proceeded to follow me out as I left and tried provoking me by telling me I should be ashamed of myself and that I should look in the mirror at myself. The bouncers are on a weird, pathetic power trip and I will absolutely be going further about this provoked harrassment. All those involved in the treatment of myself and those who watched it unfold should be totally ashamed of themselves, to treat a young girl like that is absolutely despicable, nothing but absolute bullies. read more
