I really loved this little store! This Korean family owned store is small but has much to offer. I thought it was cute because for such a small store, it carried many goodies. They had a row of Asian noodles, to row of sauces, and dried goods (like vegetables). I loved how they had little bags in the fridge that had different types of soups. So handy and makes for a quick meal if you don't have much time to cook! Other quick Asian dish fixes - dumplings and ramen. They also have huge bags of different kinds of rice (up to 15lbs) like white and brown rice. Like many other stores, they also have some gadgets relating to food - rice cookers, utensils, Asian designed bowls, etc. The owners are super nice - they will greet you when you come in, and say bye when you leave. Was day-tripping around Grand Rapids and came across this market. It's a trek from the downtown area but worth it. Didn't realize they have been out here for over 30 years. "If I'd only known about them sooner." In Chicago I have Korean grocery within a mile of my home, so I'm uber familiar with their grocery selections which make meal prep simplified. Lee's has a wide assortment of grocery products for creating Korean cuisine in your home. Mainly kitchen staples and dry products. Fresh items are few but frozen items are many. They don't offer much in the category of "made-in-house" so don't expect everything that your local H-mart (K-Chain) would have. Most of those fresh type items ie, marinated dried radish (moo mal laeng ee moo chim) would be found in small freezers kept at the front of the store. A must have for my kitchen & belly. It's fun to me that a dispo is within a block. Go over there and grab a fun pre-roll. Blaze on the walk over to Lee's. Meander around the store deciding on what would fulfill desires of the "munchies." If you asked me; grab some marinated meats from their freezer. A ready-to-prepare pack of Thukkbokki. Ask the clerks for some ideas on additions to your thukk. ie spam, ramen noodles, cheese, green onion,. Last but not least a box of canned juices. Maybe shik hae (rice punch), sac sac grape or you can never go wrong with Milkis. (May feel inclined to grab a liter of Soju too. For mixing.) read more

On Saturday mornings Mrs. Lee has kimbap or other dishes available to buy, but usually these sell out fast! Best homemade kimchi ever at Lee's, not to mention all kinds of fresh odd asian produce: enoki mushrooms, maitake mushrooms, shiso herb, ginseng root, daikon radishes, Napa cabbage, bok choy, and Chinese broccoli. And endless rows of Asian boxed goods (not expired thankfully!), they have a brand of Japanese curry roux bouillon that my host mom in Japan used to make for me, I almost cried when i saw they had it. Also, they carry ALL the necessary asian candies (Pocky, Puchao, etc.) and beverages (Calpis, Ramune, so many variesties of green tea and other asian teas), electric rice makers, and they even carry those popular Korean dermal masks in every variety imaginable! Living in Korea for 5 years and coming back, one tends to miss the amazing food. Well, for those of you looking for your for reals Korean food fix, look no further. Be that ramen, snacks, (real homemade) kimchi, spicy rice cakes, dried anchovies for making broth; they've got it. Their prices are also quite reasonable. A lot of Asian food stores are a fusion of everything and there's not a lot of focus to it. While Lee's does have some Japanese and Chinese food stuffs, it is absolutely focused on the Korean side of things. My wife and I both loved our trip here and the couple that owns / runs the store are both amazingly friendly. My wife, was able to chat about their life here, and I got to brush up on my Korean a bit. We'll 100% be making another trip back in the near future. Can't wait! read more

I love this market! Every time we go in, there are other people from nearby communities that drive to GR just to buy ingredients here! The kimchee is great & the owner is very friendly!! She is always smiling and asks if we need a cart. She makes delicious cabbage kimchee (without MSG) as well as radish kimchee (with MSG). The shelves are packed with all kinds of Asian ingredients from tea & dried ingredients to presliced frozen meats & fish to bags of rice to an entire aisle devoted to ramen & noodles! The prices seem relatively comparable to other stores in the area (with the exception of the top ramen. They are 80 cents each here, but only 20-25 cents at the grocery store!) I will definitely be going back to this market to satisfy my kimchee and ramen cravings! read more

This shop is as fantastic as it is because Mrs. Lee is both a sweet woman and a great businessperson who knows how to keep her shelves stocked with the best stuff. The prices tend to run a little higher than other shops around town, but the selection is better - despite the small size of the shop, the shelves are densely packed. I'm talking two full shelf sections of soy sauce, plenty of brands of rice in bags ranging from moderate to monstrous, and a full wall of various noodles. There's also plenty of fresh goods available whereas most Asian markets simply stock packaged items. The last time I went to Lee's, Mrs. Lee helped me find all the raw materials I needed for miso soup and threw in a piece of ginger for free. And yeah, try the kimchi; it's great. read more

I was looking for a pick up some Korean groceries specifically and Lee's Oriental Market did not disappoint. It has a great selection of items and Mrs. Lee was very nice. At the end of my visit she enthusiastically reminded me, "Tomorrow I do gim-bap! Every Saturday I do gim-bap!" Looks like I've found a regular Saturday stop. My only criticism is it's a bit pricey. I've been shopping here regularly for a year and tell everyone I know about this place! Growing up in California I grew accustomed to having huge chain asian markets around me. When I got here I found the few asian stores around left a lot to be desired (in both products and cleanliness). They carry seasonal vegetables and other produce, frozen meats fishes and packaged food. Every sauce and broth, packaged ramen, mushrooms, etc. Bulk items such as rice. Household items like onggi, Even Korean and Japanese ice creams.. They pack a TON into the store! Mr. and & Mrs. Lee are super friendly and will help you out anyway they can. I have ONE korean soda that I dramatically can't live without. I asked Mr Lee if they carried it, and he ordered it for me! I don't know many mom and pop shops that would do that. Anytime I take on a korean recipe Mrs. Lee always offers great insight! Such as the right yeast for brewing Makgeolli.. If I could do all my shopping here I would! But make sure to stop by on a Saturday at least one time so you can snag a package of Mrs. Lee's Kimbap! They're great to take to the park (or devour in your car before you get out of the parking lot). read more

This is definitely a super korean oriental market. I got there around dinner time and as soon as I get in I smelled something yummy cooking. The owners are super friendly and extremely helpful. Boss lady asked me if I needed help twice within the 5 mins I was there. They are super friendly and so cute because she even directed her husband to help me after a couple more mins. I love the kimchi they make because they are not super sour or sweet. They also have frozen goods that are ready to be heat up. They also have raw marinated goods that has dates on the package. Went here for the first time today. Bought two containers of bulgogi that were 15.00 for each container. They are homemade by Lee and pre marinated already. This is a great deal and way easier than making by yourself. I also bought two bags of potstickers at $4.50 each. They have all kinds of authentic Korean foods for a great deal. If you live nearby, go here for your Asian groceries! There are so many goodies: Mochi ice cream, Botan rice candy, and many flavors of Pocky that I had never even seen before. Here you can find beautiful cookware and servingware and even Asian cosmetics like BB cream! I have been going to Asian stores my entire life since my mom is from the Philippines and this place is one of the best I have seen. It may feel a bit awkward to browse around because you will likely be the only customer and the owners aren't very comfortable speaking English. Lu O, I think your a filthy lier and you should be ashamed of yourself. You sure your not talking about Soul Market or Olympic Market ( the other 2 Korean Markets in GR). Because I have known Mrs. Lee for 20 years and never heard of such ridiculous babble. If she is cooking or making fresh kimchee she's the type of person that offers a taste to every customer. This is the reason why most major Hotel Executive Chefs go to Lee's Oriental Market to buy the best kichee by far in town and special asian ingredients. She was the one who encourage me to love and experiment with asian ingredients and go to culinary school in France. Now I'm lucky to say I work as a Chef at Four Seasons in Chicago. Every time I get a chance to go back to Grand Rapids I buy 3 gallons of kimchee and her weekend sushi veg rolls.
