The Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) is a huge, sprawling hospital in the centre of Leeds and you'd be well advised to research exactly where in the hospital your appointment is before you arrive. It can easily end up being a long walk across town to find the right ward if you get it wrong. In spite of its large and sprawling nature the hospital is efficient. Waiting times are short and staff are attentive. Obviously, no one ever really wants to g to a hospital but if you do have to go to one you'd rather go to a nice, efficient one and "nice and efficient" describes the LGI well. As hospitals go it's not an awful place to be either. The wards and general areas are decorated nicely and there's art here and there. There's a Costa Coffee within the hospital as well as a gift shop and a roof top garden. The first version of the hospital was opened in 1771 by graduates of the University of Edinburgh Medical School but the current version opened in 1869 and has gone through several refurbishments, upgrades and expansions since. Much of the layout plans of the hospital were based on recommendations by Florence Nightingale. So, I would absolutely avoid ever coming here but only because it's a hospital and I would absolutely avoid ever going to any of them. If you have to be in a hospital the LGI is just fine. Besides, I was born here, so it gets extra points for that. read more

Get your appointment location wrong and you may be lost forever! Honestly, there are times when I've been sorely tempted to catch a bus to another part of the hospital. As with many large hospitals in big cities LGI has been remodelled and added to over the years with the result that there are carbuncles on the structure that even their best surgeon couldn't remove and lots of unexpected and seemingly pointless changes of level in order to get to your destination. Travelling through LGI is a real exercise in 4 dimensional travel. There are always going to be stories of horror, joy and grief in any hospital but my personal experience has been of rather inept management and administration coupled with caring, dedicated staff (in most areas) who do the best they can with more and more limited funding. It remains a personal bugbear that hospitals such as LGI now resemble shopping malls in places (with the exception of affordable, accessible parking). Oh for the days when you could grab reasonable refreshment from a basic but clean cafeteria run by volunteers. read more

I have mixed feelings about this hospital. They were fantastic with 2 of my children who were born here, the youngest of whom was premature and the people they had were truly inspirational. The ward for prem babies is certainly a sobering place to spend time, but the nurses were patient, supportive and incredibly skilled. Unfortunately my father was in here too - a few years ago. His treatment was appalling. They left him in dirty, blood-stained sheets and failed to spot a potentially dangerous infection in the wound left after his operation. We ended up having to get him out and to a specialist to fix him up. If I was awarding stars for either experience it would be 1 for my father's experience but 5 for my kids. So a 3 is fair I reckon. read more

This hospital is absolutely huge spreading all the way from the end of Leeds University and into the centre of town. I can't give it more than 3 starts because its a hospital and going into hospital is never a good thing, right? But that's not to say its a bad hospital. It is so large, with so many wings that its hard to judge as a whole. Some parts are super contemporary with shiny automatic doors whilst others remind me of the crumbling old fashioned girls school I went to long ago. I have been there a few times for blood tests. The staff are friendly and I never have to wait too long. The place could to with a bit of brightening up but we wouldn't want to waste the NHS's money on that would we? read more

I recently had to take my toddler here because she had shoved a bead up her nose. We had origionally gone to St James's A&E but they left us waiting for hours (they forgot about us) and b the time we got seen it was hours past my little girls bedtime and she was too tired and cranky to still when they were hurting her. We were referred to LGI childrens ward and went straight there. The dr was lovely but my daughter still wouldn't let him try to get the bead out. He booked her in for a small op the next day. Anyhow we went back at 7am for the op, the new Dr wanted to try one last time without knocking her out. He was fantastic he was busy talking to her about Thomas the Tank engine, she didn't even realise he had put anything up her nose and out the bead popped. In future if we need treatment I will go straight to the LGI. read more

This hospital is very handy for the city centre but can be difficult to get to from out of town at busy periods. Parking can be tricky. My medical experiences have been good, but some of the facilities are now looking very dated, and the general surgery outpatients waiting area is uncomfortable. The staff are always very professional and caring. read more

This is a massive hospital which takes in a lot of patients it also has got some excellent nurses and doctors working here. No long waiting times have occured for me when coming here for any emergencies the nurses take you in about 35 minutes time when you come in here. If your illness is a major one doctors will come to you in short time.All my stays at this hospital have been fine had no problem with them at all. read more

I was taking my son to ENT department recently and we got totally lost and ended up down a really old and grubby looking part that really could have done with a lick of paint or total refurbishment. Finally found someone to ask who pointed us in the right direction. All the staff were lovely with my son but it seems to be a long time between each of his appointments so nothing seems to be getting done quickly. read more

I recently was on ward 53 at the LGI. The ward was filthy.with dried urine and blood stains on the floor,staff that did not have the time of day for you.The toilets looked like they had never seen a cleaner,they were dredfull. When I mentioned this to the staff nurse in charge she through a complaint leaflet in my face. The next day I complained to the ward sister,who showed no intrest in what I had to say.She just walked of as if my complaint was just another one she had heard. I pray to god I never end up in a filthy,down-trodden ward as 53. read more

when my nan was in intensive care here.. all the family came round. i mean we spent all day every day for weeks there and we took up both family rooms.. we had the xbox hooked up to the tellie. the coffee machine was broken and gave us free coffee.. the staff where very plesentIts not the best place to look at. can look very old and dirty in some of the hospital, but in the newer parts the building itself is beautiful.. The doctoring side. my nan survived 3 heart attacks, cancer 2 times and a double heart bypass over the years.. so they must be doing something right.. never had any problems with them. decent place.. Went in for a blood test recently. and they seem to be doing lots of renovation work.. ooh and another thing. its very very easy to get lost in.. found that out the hard way. read more

I came into A and E after being referred by my doctor as I was unable to swallow at all even my own salvia and had not eaten for 2 days or drank any liquids for a couple of hours. They fast tracked me through A and E and I was in a bed and on iv within an hour. All the staff were very friendly and put me at ease, joking with me even though I was very ill, making me laugh and feel calm when I had previously felt panicked and scared. I was worried I might be in hospital for a few days and really didn't want to stay overnight on my own-none of my family or friends were in Leeds at the time and I am only young. But 9 hours later after a mixture of strong drugs I was swallowing again and my breathing was a lot easier, big thanks to the doctors as I was actually able to eat a yoghurt when I got home and couldn't be happier also I was able to get over 2 hours sleep for the first time in over a week. staff are very friendly and welcoming which is nice. they are constantly on the ward so you never feel alone and can always ask for help/merely chat if you want to. a&e is very busy though - a massive downside as you can be stuck there for hours (hence my 4 star rating rather than 5). very clean environment and generally a good hospital! read more

Leeds General Infirmary also known as LGI is a great all rounder of a hospital which deals with general aches and pains, specialists, sexual health, ultrasound, and so much more I cannot list it. It also has a drop in centre for accidents not needing casualty (DIY disasters etc!) and a fully staffed casualty, this is where Richard Hammond was airlifted to after his accident a few years back. It is a great hospital, spotless, well run, and the staff are amazing. Anything specialised like oncology is dealt with out of Jimmys up the road but for a general hospital this is a great asset to the area, easy to access and easy to find. A great healthcare asset to Leeds. read more

I was referred to the neurology department and the consultant was so rude and two hours late. he was condescending. he had lost my notes and said i would get an appointment i never heard from him again and had to go through my gp to get re referred. this time he was all sweetness and light and then sent a letter to my gp of which i have had to fight to get a copy stating he thought i had anxiety problems not physical ones. this man has no qualifications in mental health. he would do well to remember he is a consultant not god and he bleeds the same colour as the rest ofus. read more
