I feel so ambivalent about LeDu. We went to the LeDu in Maxvorstadt a while back and were quite satisfied with our dumpling experience there. So seeing the second LeDu location in the Glockenbachviertel, we were excited to go there for a repeat. And were we so wrong...
This location, compared to the Maxvorstadt one, is much bigger and posher. Here one can meet up with friends, hang out, and enjoy dinner. That's probably the only pro of this location.
Having grown up eating dim sum, I was confused/irritated about LeDu's concept of dim sum. While they do offer the two mainstays of dim sum, Har Gow (shrimp dumpling-my favorite) and Shumai (mixed pork/shrimp dumpling), I was aghast at the prices (3 pieces of Har Gow or 4 pieces of Shumai for 6.90 €). As much as I know I will never find dim sum prices overseas like those in NY, I still find them really high for what they offer. With that said, I couldn't get myself to order them. To add more insult to my dining experience, they offer other "dim sum" dishes like sautéed broccoli, spare ribs, etc., which many of them aren't technically really dim sum but simply cooked dishes served in small portions.
We tried the Pak Choi and Broccoli "dim sum" (it's so wrong that I have to use quotation marks), and it was a major disappointment: few pieces of soggy broccoli and frozen shrimps and 4 pieces of pak choi for 7 €/dish. I felt like I hardly ate anything. We also ordered vegetarian dumplings, and while it was tasty, it wasn't enough to save our dinner.
Take-home points:
1. Go to the Maxvorstadt location -- better dumpling options and prices
2. Aside from Har Gow and Shumai, the other dishes offered are not authentic dim sum (i.e. Cantonese-based) dishes. read more
