This used to be family owned and they used to stock unique wines, ports, ciders, beers (you name it!) that you may have stumbled upon in your international travel and was pleasantly surprised to find at your local corner liquor shop. Since the change in ownership, I feel like the quality of alcohol has decreased. Don't get me wrong, they will stock 1 brand of really good liquor and have practically every item from that brand, but they're starting to run out of the unique and niche liquors that made me fall in love with this place. Still a good institution to visit, but I will prob look elsewhere for the unique and niche wines, ports, ciders, and other libation elsewhere. I do appreciate the renovation and how bright the store looks now, but very sad that the old owner retired and sold the place to someone else. read more

A Berkeley institution that Ed Ledger had turned into squirrel's horde of both popular and obscure whiskeys, mezcal, tequila, and many other libations. You really had to hunt and peck to find that gem but they were there, ready to be found if you knew what you wanted. Today, Ed retired having sold the business to another family entirely. The store has been completely revamped and organized with all the old prices intact. However, the knowledgeable recommendations and easy conversations are gone. But let's hope this place will continue to inspire. read more

Third visit to this store and always improving and giving great service. Today I was looking for Mezcal for cocktails and the section of Mezcal alone was HUGE. Staff was super attentive talking me through different options and telling me about the different profiles. Large clean space, kind knowledgeable staff, big selection of whatever I am looking for. I find the prices competitive to a large box store, but with more variety. They are planning on a grand opening this month, and I hope they get the following they deserve. read more

It's fine, but like other have said, it's not the same. Much more liquor store than bottle shop museum. Still has a bigger selection than your typical store, especially for liquor & wine, but the sheer breadth is no longer present. I was looking for a peaty single malt scotch whisky, and got a wonderful education on some famous vs lesser-known names, and imported vs domestic distilleries. Also got great advice on choices in my price range. Also, was looking for arak. Other stores said, "What's that?" At Ledger's they asked what I wanted in an arak. I was looking for a gift for Friend who said I need whiskey with a bear on the label. I think the name says something about Republic. Turns out he wanted lost Republic whiskey. Venmo did not have it even though their website said they did. Luckily ledgers liquors had three varieties even though it size is 1/20 of Venmo. the staff was helpful on the phone and very friendly and directed me to what I needed immediately. This place has one of the best selections of whiskey I have seen in the East Bay. The service there was amazing, and they were able to answer all my questions and make some great recommendations. As others have mentioned, the store does not look like a lot from the outside, but inside they have packed shelves with everything you could need. I walked down University to Ledger liquor store in what felt like 80 degree weather in the middle of the winter--5 stars for California! That aside, the store front is quite unassuming and I nearly walked straight by it. Once inside, I was greeted by this musky, slightly messy, absolutely glorious collection of alcohol. There was a large selection of bitters, a meh selection of wine, and an amazing selection of beers! One of the guys working there, I didn't get his name but he had brown curly hair, had the exact same taste in alcohol as me so that was pretty cool (into smoky scotches, mezcal, porters, etc.). He recommended a couple beers and as I browsed occasionally brought me a few more good ones. He was really helpful and wasn't pushing sales or anything since at one point he pointed out how expensive one of the icelandic smoked porters I was hoping was and how I should try A smoked porter before buying such a pricey one--so nice! Apparently Thursday afternoons, which is when I was there, are the perfect time to go buy some beers as they generally have everything in stock. The one downside is that if you're taking the bus back around 3-4pm get ready to be squished by a ton of middle school kids. Ugh, get off my beer bro! For me, Ledger's ranks right up there with Al Lasher's Electronics as one of the businesses that made living in Berkeley a treat. Today I went in because I needed to restock my boat with booze. I knew I needed a few things. I left with a few things I didn't know I needed but have grown to love, as per usual. Ledger's is a great place to discover things, in a way that BevMo can never be. The same guy is behind the counter, the guy who knows what I like, and knows when it'll be arriving, and totally has my back. I love this liquor store. I bet you will too. read more

This place is incredible. I would love to shop there more. But I am a cheap bastard. However, when I am in a pinch for a specialty and hard to find ingredient, I know Ledgers will have it. A buddy of mine was obsessed with Manhattans. And he was looking for brandied cherries. I told him to try Ledgers. He didn't. I went in the next week to find that they had two varieties, including the insanely-good imported french ones for $30 per 500ml (which by the way is a perfectly fair price). They have more bitters than you could ever dream of, which are essential for making those uber-hip classic cocktails (including the hard to find peach bitters). And if you ever want to start you own airline, this is where you would go to stock the bar with 50ml bottles. But crazy stuff. They have Volvic in glass bottles! Nobody has that. This guy is a genius. And he deserves more business from me than just my bitters business. Sigh. Although they do have a small clearance rack, which I have supported on occasion. read more
