Amazing food! The pork was tender and juicy and the "cuerito" was crunchy! Highly recommended!

Visit to the "Pork Highway " in Guavate, Puerto Rico. Food photo speaks for itself. Succulent pork, blood sausage and rice with gandules (beans). Quite a drive south of San Juan, but with the trip.

We came closer to the end of the day around 4-5 pm and there was almost no food left but the food we did get was delicious. Tons of spaces to sit and looks like a great spot for a group. The pork was so tender and juicy and the pork was served with super crunchy, crispy skin. Meal was around $15 with a drink. Food was pretty lukewarm and not super fresh given they were closing up for the day but nevertheless delicious. Definitely might be a super noteworthy meal if you come earlier in the day!

Bueno, bonito, y barato. Good, pretty, and cheap (in the most positive way). This is delicious local cuisine - roasted pig, rice, beans, empanadillas, guineitos, guanimes, etc. The have something for every family member. Staff is friendly and and patient (when you are ordering many of everything). Can't wait until the next visit.

Stopped here coming back from Ponce. This is a great place for truly authentic Puerto Rican food. Very friendly staff! This is a small, open air kitchen with a large bbq pit and whole pig roasting on a spit. The dishes are offered cafeteria style with over 15 options to choose from. There is indoor and outdoor covered seating. Flies and birds may be a slight nuisance, but it is part of the experience! I ordered the carne frita con arroz con gandules. The meat was crispy and tender. While the arroz was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. They have a large number of plátano y yucca sides to choose from as well as arrepas and alcapurrias. There is no printed menu, so it is a little difficult to order if you are unfamiliar with PR cuisine. Just let your eyes do the ordering! I truly enjoyed this experience!

I am a great fan of this place when I go to Puerto Rico. It is a very rustic place, right in the middle of the island in the Guavate area. You won't miss as it is the first of many Lechoneras in the area. To order, you need to make a line. If you have no clue what they have, I suggest to first take a look at the food display and get an idea. It is definitely fun to try many of their dishes. BTW - this is not a place if you are vegan or vegetarian. ;) I went for the star of the place: Roasted pig. It was moist, delicious, yummy. Also tried, their white rice which is cook with pork fat. The morcilla (blood sausage) is really good as well. I asked to try it because the previous time I was there it was so spicy, I could not eat it. The bar is rustic (of course) but have some good drinks. The Coconut mojito was super good - they actually shredded coconut right there while preparing it. Never had coconut mojito with shredded coconut and a splash of coconut milk (I think).. It is a must have. The only reason I am not giving them a 5 star is because staff needs to have a little bit of more patience with people like us that have no clue in what to order. We got there not at a busy time so I was hoping a bit more help.

Came here expecting to just get locally prepared bbq pork (lechón), walked out with an experience like no other. Everything looked so tasty visually that everything had to be ordered. We ordered roasted pig, ribs, pork loin, pork skins, different types of sausages (including the local morcilla which is equivalent to a Louisiana blood sausage), and an assortment of traditional Puerto Rican sides. One word - "Legendary"!!!!! I will definitely be returning before I leave back home.

Honestly very inconsistent. Hey it looks delicious behind the glass but once on your place you'll be disappointed. It is eatable, but you won't be happy. I'd pass the pork Highway and call it a day! The food channel got this seriously wrong!!

When I told my friend whom I was visiting in Puerto Rico that the #1 thing I had on my list of "must-dos" during my trip is go to one of the many lechoneras in Guavate, he knew exactly where to take me. El Mojito is his favorite lechonera, and after eating there I know why... and I haven't been able to get the food out of my head since! Slightly set back from Highway 184, El Mojito is a large wooden building with no windows providing plenty of open-air seating. It occupies a big space, but you have to look for it or know where it is because the name of the place blends in with all of their beer advertisements! Once we walked up, we were greeted by the front end of a pig on a spit-roast. The back end was being hacked off into pieces with a machete. I knew then and there that this experience was going to be magical. Now, I don't know if they do this for everyone or if it was only because my friend is a regular there? But he was able to get one of the employees to give us a behind-the-scenes tour including the huge meat refrigerators and ROWS of spit-roasters. I was a kid in a candy store. First, when he proudly uncovered one of the roasters revealing a gloriously crispy and golden beast, I almost squealed with delight. But then, when he uttered something in Spanish, and my friend translated that he said I could pull a piece off of meat from the pig, I couldn't hold my squeal in any longer! Best day of my LIFE! After I regained control, we headed back to the cafeteria-style restaurant were we ordered more lechon, arroz con gandules, escabeche de guineos, mofongo, mangu, stewed pig's ear, baked yuca, and my all-time favorite-- blood sausage. A seeming feast, but it was completely devoured along with a couple of cold brews and my newly discovered favorite drink-- whisky & agua de coco. Amazing. Hands down the best meal of my trip! I hate to sound cliche, but you can taste the love in this food, and it's exactly what keeps me coming back to Puerto Rico!

omg vegetarian food!!! it tasted awesome!!

This place came highly recommended by our host and I must say it was totally worth it. And I don't even eat meat. After a week in puerto rico with delicious local cuisine - mofongo, tostones, rice and gandules, guineitos.. I was craving something more flavorful and spicy. At El Mojito, I found a chickpea and tomato 'curry' style dish which gave me just that. I had it with some rice and mofongo on the side and it was divine. Oh and the pork.. my husband got some lechon and really liked it (of course). He said it was one of the best he had. The servers were really friendly (cafeteria style) and there was plenty of seating.

This is the first big lechonera off of exit 32 in Guavate and they had the most selection of items to eat. Got a pound of roast pork, some morcilla, a maduro, and plantains cooked with vegetables. The pork was good and the pork belly was great - although it was salty and fatty, it felt like I was eating a slice of succulence that would cause me to have a heart attack. The maduro was good as were the cooked plantains. The pork skin was crispy and salty but a good complement to the meat underneath that falls apart when you put it in your mouth. It was a good start on the pork highway!

    Pork, platains, gandules. Delish!

This place seems like its in the middle of nowhere in a mountain area. it open to the outdoors with a nice mountain breeze and very inexpensive. There is nothing fancy about this place but the pork is very flavorful. they ran out of white rice so i couldnt order the red beans to have with rice. I was left with the option of having gandules which is rice mixed with beans. I am glad we were able to try the gandules because they were really good!

This place is right on the main highway, it's huge and packed so plan accordingly: we arrived before noon on a Friday, so we probably got one of the last parking spots (there's a guy managing or charging in the parking lot? not sure) and the line was manageable. A large group and some buses showed up after us, so it got really crowded! Anyway, we had a short line, had no idea what we were doing to order (I should have researched better) but pointed and nodded, and with some help from the nice people in line, ended up with two huge platters of pork, rice and some other sides - way more food that we probably needed. The food: delicious! I would say our #2 favorite meal in Puerto Rico, after Marmalade (but that was more than 10x the price!) The pork was delicious, juicy, flavorful, and the crackling was to die for! I wish they would package those and sell them - probably only good fresh, though. Rice and sides were adequate: my son tried to be healthy and said the salad and potatoes were ok, but you're really there for the pork. Cost etc.: we paid less than $50 for 2 enormous plates of food and some sodas. It was enough for 3 lunch servings, plus enough leftovers for 2 people to have the rest for dinner - so I guess 5 servings? The wait was not bad early on a weekday, but they must get incredibly overrun on weekends. It is entertaining to see the pork cooking on a spit (please don't come if you are vegetarian and sensitive to such things) and watch them hacking away with machetes. My husband wondered if the machetes are the same once used for sugar cane!

During our trip to Puerto Rico, we made a stop at a lechónera- a restaurant that serves lechón (one…read moreof PR's unofficial national dishes), which is a whole, slow-roasted pig. This restaurant is just one of many open-air roadside spots that serve lechón along "La Ruta del Lechón", aka the "pork highway" in Guavate. We got a half pound of lechon along with Mamposteao, which was delicious and filling. The pork skin hit a level of shatteringly crispy texture that I have never had from non-fried pork skin. We came later in the day, which unfortunately meant that the pork was slightly dried out. However, the texture and flavor of the lechón was absoutely delicious. It's a "build your own box" style restaurant where you choose which sides you want on the dipslay. Besides the mamposteao there were also other delicious-looking sides such as plantains/mofongo, beans, fruit, etc. There's a small parking lot outside the restaurant- one where the rule is you can only back your car into your parking space. Interesting. Would definetely come to try lechón here again!
