Guavate is a "barrio" (neighborhood) in the central part if Puerto Rico, in a town known as Cayey. Around 45 minutes to an hour from San Juan, this is the ideal place to have the most authentic Puerto Rican food you will find for the best prices ever. Known as "La Ruta del Lechón" (the route of the pig), Guavate is a neighborhood filled with way too many restaurants that specialize on roasted pork and Puerto Rican food, in general. Vegetarian/Vegans also have options here, so do not hesitate to visit Guavate and experience all of the amazing food Puerto Rico has to offer. Just be aware that you will probably see porks being roasted everywhere. Finally, Guavate is well known for their street markets and restaurants with live music for guests to dance... and believe me, you will want to dance!! Also, most restaurants have a full bar and cocktails are inexpensive. How to get there? To get to Guavate from San Juan take PR-52 southbound. When getting near Cayey, take exit #32, which says Guavate. Turn left and head up the mountain on PR-184. When you reach km 27 you will start seeing lechoneras and shops selling souvenirs. Finally, if going during the weekend, try to make it there before 11:30am, since this is another frequented location by locals. read more
