    Aylett Grant Tax

These are the facts: I contacted Aylett Grant in October 2017 to do my taxes, as I'd moved from…read moreCanada to the United States and was feeling overwhelmed by the number of forms required for this. On December 14th, I had a consultation ($250) where not much more than the initial form that I filled out was discussed. I provided my final pay stub on Dec 29th, the earliest it was available. On March 9th (three months later, and far too late to go looking for another accountant) the quote arrived for over $3,000 including one Tax Free Savings Account and said that I was less than a week from the deadline for being able to register the TFSAs. Many emails were exchanged, where the person on the other end claimed they'd answered my questions, when I repeatedly assured them that they had not, clearly frazzled about the rush of tax season (if only I'd approached them 5 months earlier in October...). I ended up doing my taxes myself, albiet using the quote I'd received (for $250 consultation) as a roadmap of what was required. This is my opinion: 1) During the consultation, I inquired about ways to reduce my tax burden in the coming years, but they were not interested in this, they just wanted to fill out forms and collect their fee. Not much point in all that experience with the tax codes if you're not going to advise people on the in's and out's of them. The forms come with instructions that anyone can follow, people come to accountants to learn what's not spelled out in the instructions. 2) The timeline is extremely telling. One month before your taxes are due, a week before the first step is due, they'll give you the quote that they could have given you 3 months earlier. This turns you from a proactive customer into a desperate customer, and the latter is much easier to milk for all they're worth. 3) Taxes are not that difficult if you're only doing them for yourself. I get that being an accountant and knowing the in's and out's of the constantly changing law is difficult when you're doing it for someone else, but taxes come with instructions. For the US, start with Form 1040 and read the instructions carefully. For Canada, start with T1 General for whichever province you're filing in and read the instructions carefully. If someone hands you a $3,000 bill for relatively straight forward situation, feel free to tell them to shove it.

Save your money and stay away! Would receive outrageous bills for no actual work done such as $75…read morefor an email sent asking if I wanted to file personal taxes with them which I responded with a no. ended up spending tens of thousands of dollars and nothing was filed or finished. Peter would spend at least the first 30 mins of a meeting talking about himself them pull in other accountants so that he could charge for their time as well. Shameful
