My two girls (ages 11 and 9) have worked with Tamar over the past year. We began working with her to supplement the Hebrew education our girls were receiving in Hebrew School. My oldest daughter expressed interest in learning more Hebrew, so we looked for, and found, a wonderful Hebrew tutor. Tamar works with both of our daughters at the same time (during the same hour) but manages to successfully individualize their Hebrew instruction. Over the course of the year, Tamar has learned what motivates them and how to motivate them! She is very patient with both girls and is so supportive of their progress. They both look forward to working with her because she is just so genuinely encouraging. Tamar cares about their Hebrew instruction, and it shows. She has brought over games, songs, and supplements that continue to engage my girls. Both girls have improved their Hebrew tremendously. My oldest is a fluent reader and while preparing for her Bat Mitzvah, is also simultaneously learning Hebrew as a language. My youngest has learned all of her letters and is an emerging reader (with consistent, steady progress). Tamar is warm, gracious, patient, dedicated, caring and works engaging her students. I can not recommend her more highly. She is a gem in the world of educators and we are so fortunate to be working with her.

He was in the 4th grade and was struggling with his math (he had gotten a C on his report card. She did an initial assessment of his skills and knowledge (even in reading) to determine and establish a starting point. This included doing addition, subtraction, simple or single digit multiplication, and division. She then worked with him during the hour long session to answer questions, model how to solve the proble., etc. She then gave weekly assignments and went over the homework she gave each week to help determine where additional support was needed. In one grading period my son's reading grade went from a B to an A+ and his math from a C to a B+. I have seen definite improvement. Her rates are way more affordable than Sylvan and other higher priced places and because she has worked at those companies previously, she is able to tailor approaches to meet your kids needs. My attention was captivated as I earned trophies at competitions, performed in recitals, and participated in duets. I achieved many awards through small achievements frequently which kept me engaged. From memorizing pages, learning songs, and completing technique drills all my efforts were recognized. The two Steinway Grand pianos at her studio are truly gorgeous instruments and feel fantastic to play. I highly recommend Patti Nyien as a teacher and her Noteworthy Piano Studio to students of all ages.

I took piano lessons at Noteworthy Piano Studio for 14 years (stopping after I graduated high…read moreschool). Patti (who is the sole instructor at the studio) was always very encouraging of my hard work, gently vindictive of the times I fell short, and knowledgeable on the material I worked on. In my 14 years there, I went from chopsticks to Chopin and everything in between. Patti uses multiple teaching techniques to advance her students. While the regular instruction at the piano was certainly her main tool, she also had computer programs that would help with rhythm, understanding music theory, and even playing pieces. Once a year, I went out for AIM testing, where I would perform for a different teacher and they would provide me some instruction. They would test me on my sight reading ability and how well I performed a song (or several). There were some real advantages of doing this testing. It set a specific goal for where I would need to be, and I had to work towards that goal so I could pass the test and reach a new "level" of piano (AIM in particular was a pass/fail course and had specific criteria for numerous levels of the program - in the end I got to Level 11 iirc). One of the main things that sets her studio apart is how many opportunities she makes for students to perform their material. She hosts group piano classes about once a season where students can perform in front of a small group of other students. I really enjoyed these growing up, and they were a great motivator for working on my repertoire. Additionally, she hosted much larger recitals twice a year that allowed me to pick a piece or two and perform it in a piano hall in front of other piano students and their parents. The other students and I were also offered opportunities to perform at various functions throughout the year (such as her recent Glorious Grands concert last year), and were given options to compete in several competitions. My instruction at Noteworthy Piano Studio allowed me to be able to play piano on my own as an adult. I regularly go to pick up new sheet music for a song I want to learn, and I still play on a nearly daily basis on my own time. I no longer have a teacher that I report to each week, but I strongly feel that Patti's instruction is what enabled me to reach this point.

My daughter had a 45 minute assessment today to figure out strengths and weaknesses in math to determine the right fit for tutoring at Mathnasium in Evergreen Park. During her assessment, (which most would consider a test) a tutor on duty talked the entire time while seated near my child, held a parent consultation across from my child, stood up and small talked a few feet from my child's desk area LOUDLY, yelled across the room to the same parent exiting, I mean she would not shut up. I found it very distracting from where I was seated and very unprofessional. If a child is taking an assessment, would it be too much to ask for a lowered voice? Move to a quiet corner of the center? Talk softly? Consult the other parent there in another part of the room? Well apparently this was too much to ask. The tutor and the owner, once the other parent left, began to talk about holiday and weekend plans, their upcoming work shifts, how the owner's wife fell down the stairs...etc. all while the tutor is standing over and near my child taking an assessment. How rude! I got up twice. I began to coach myself to calm down. But, I know my child, she is nine years old and doesn't concentrate well when things are going on around her, especially adult small talk, YOU KNOW? LIKE MOST KIDS!!!!. I went over the first time to see how she was doing because this woman talking and talking was getting on my nerves and I was seated several feet away, I figured my kid couldn't possibly be knocking out this test. Wait I'm sorry, assessment. She was stuck on a problem. The second time I went over I was through with this place. The tutor was standing near my child asking about weekend plans. My child was still on the same problem she was on minutes before! Mr O (the owner) told me that he told her if she's stuck on a problem to circle it and keep going, I'm surprised she didn't circle the whole thing! When I asked to reschedule during a more private session with less distractions they both looked puzzled. The owner said "During assessments there is no quiet place this is the environment." Whoa that was my cue. My request was incredulous to them. Ha. Whelp we are out. No apology no effort, no concern. Nothing. No customer service? I personally will not spend over $200 a month here. Mr. O was very pleasant and detailed over the phone but once I got to the location, my impressions slowly faded. Also, I must say Mr O if you read this, the tutor once she found out you were coming, she told the little girl she was tutoring that they needed to move from the way they were seated. She wasn't facing the window and did not see me when I entered nor did she greet me. She was more concerned about why you were coming up there. SMH.
