We recently holidayed down the road and were walking into Hythe having had nothing to eat yet and…read morethought this looked nice for coffee and pastries. The decor is minimal but not at all austere despite it being a large space, mostly because it's all wood and subtle colours. Real napkins on the tables! Along the whole length of one wall is an amazing wooden shelving unit / dresser with drawers. It was discovered out in the garage when the new people opened the restaurant and was made for the general stores which is what this building had been when it first opened. There are fantastic lamps on the walls - incandescent bulbs with gorgeous twisty filaments in metal cages. Lovely. Anyway, the menu was small but unusual. Once we had seen the menu we decided to have a little more than a croissant! I chose scrambled eggs with chives and cream; my partner had charred mackerel with pickled cherries. There was not a lot when it arrived but it was delicious and with a gorgeous creamy texture. It came with slices of soda bread toast, griddles with olive oil. The combination was delicious. My partner loved his fish, which looked not far off raw and loved the pickled cherries too. As this had been so good we decided to try the wonderfully named Dirty, filthy cheesecake! So named because they mix in another pungent cheese. Today it was stinking bishop! When it arrived as a small portion with currants and grapes and a red wine reduction it was delicious. Very firm and dense and with a definite taste of something pungent lurking in the background. Unusual. We decided to finish with a latte each and agreed afterwards that it was a top class cup of coffee. Service was very friendly, the cakes on the counter looked great, the cocktails sounded extra special and Dan is a bit of a cocktail whizz by all accounts. Also, the wine list was individual and had obviously been chosen thoughtfully. Sadly, as we still had our early morning hats on we didn't feel wine was appropriate ... We were very impressed and would have loved a return visit but due to the press of the weekend it didn't happen.

Came here for lunch yesterday. Lovely little spot. Pleasant inside with service to match. The food…read moreis more than decent, interesting choices and good portion size. The lamb we had was tender and tasty, with a lovely salsa verde. The fishcake was fresh if a little light on salmon. My only gripe was the gnocchi which was fried and terrible really. The rest excellent, a lovely chocolate dessert. Also the soda bread with brown butter was superb. Great price at £15 for two courses. I'd love to come back and get stuck into the wine list which looked great. Very nice.

Ok... This is where I shop my inept tourist-ey self. Before this trip to Calais, I'd never once…read moreleft England... Unless you count Wales... I literally went to Calais because I got my first passport at age 22 and thought 'I should probably use this'... Well, actually my girlfriend said 'you are using this'. But that's beside the point. Either way, I ended up in Calais. I then ended up here. Now you'd think that, when leaving the country, you'd at least attempt to learn the language of wherever you are going... NOPE! So I ended up in this very nice Patisserie, attempting to order some very nice pastries... Lets just say, it was am embarrassment for all involved. Most notably, me. Either way, I ended up with a couple of pastries (there was a lot of 'that', accompanied by a pointed finger). They were extremely nice. Like, if I knew what I'd have ordered, I'd try and get some more. They were great. If you are in Calais, go here. But first, learn some French... Then tell me what the awesome sponge squares full of fruit and jam are called... Because googling 'What are those french sponge things with fruit and jam in them called' was not particularly helpful.

This is a good old honest patisserie. The counter is at the front of the shop, on the street side,…read morebut just walk through or round the back to find the cafe. Good coffee and lovely croissant and pain au chocolat, and a good choice of breads and cakes. There's a huge car park round the back too. Every time we travel through Calais we come here instead of having the hotel breakfast. They open at 6.30 am, and they're right next to the beach, so the pups get a good walk too. The only downside is they're shut on Sundays.
