There were only three servers who were incredibly overextended, but the service standards were terrible (For example, not giving us a test pour of the wine to see if the bottle was OK, and just leaving it on the table - and not providing anyway to chill the white wine while we were having dinner; we had to work really hard to get a bottle of water with our meal, and then the waitresses would disappear for long stretches and we never did get a refill of it). We had two beautiful dinners on our other two nights in France, but this was just ridiculously bad. We couldn't get out fast enough at the end of dinner (In part because it took so long just to get the damn check, but also because we were so anxious to leave). It's often busy but the staff are friendly and happy to help. We brought a birthday cake and they happily gave us plates (as they're a small cafe though I can imagine on a busier day they might not have enough spare if you're a large group like us - best to bring extra napkins if you want to do cake just in case). Either way, I ended up with a couple of pastries (there was a lot of 'that', accompanied by a pointed finger). They were extremely nice. Like, if I knew what I'd have ordered, I'd try and get some more. They were great. If you are in Calais, go here. But first, learn some French... Then tell me what the awesome sponge squares full of fruit and jam are called... Because googling 'What are those french sponge things with fruit and jam in them called' was not particularly helpful.

Once we had seen the menu we decided to have a little more than a croissant! I chose scrambled eggs with chives and cream; my partner had charred mackerel with pickled cherries. There was not a lot when it arrived but it was delicious and with a gorgeous creamy texture. It came with slices of soda bread toast, griddles with olive oil. The combination was delicious. My partner loved his fish, which looked not far off raw and loved the pickled cherries too. As this had been so good we decided to try the wonderfully named Dirty, filthy cheesecake! So named because they mix in another pungent cheese. Today it was stinking bishop! When it arrived as a small portion with currants and grapes and a red wine reduction it was delicious. Very firm and dense and with a definite taste of something pungent lurking in the background. Unusual. We decided to finish with a latte each and agreed afterwards that it was a top class cup of coffee. Service was very friendly, the cakes on the counter looked great, the cocktails sounded extra special and Dan is a bit of a cocktail whizz by all accounts. Also, the wine list was individual and had obviously been chosen thoughtfully. Sadly, as we still had our early morning hats on we didn't feel wine was appropriate ... We were very impressed and would have loved a return visit but due to the press of the weekend it didn't happen.

I ordered avocado toast with grilled chicken. My husband had grilled chicken with pesto. The portions were just right and very delicious. The sangria here is super amazing and reminds me of the best Sangria I ever had in Spain. I also loved seeing how the waiter interacted with elderly people. He was accommodating, gave hugs, bent down to talk to them and listened. It was very nice to see genuine care for customers. I plan to go back again this morning for breakfast and wifi:)
