Best Italian AND best value not only in Grenoble but in bigger cities such as Munich, Prague,…read moreVienna, and Geneva. No English menu but wait staff speak enough English and additional help from Google was sufficient. Portion size is quite generous even by American standard. Very flavorful tortellini and the best ravioli. Bar none. The waiter recommended a $26 red wine. It tasted a lot more expensive. Very nice and interesting decor. Great place!

This restaurant is not going to serve pizza with middle eastern toppings and flavors, like lots of others here in Grenoble. in fact, you are not going to get pizza at all. This is a REAL Italian restaurant! So strap in! My wife and I came to dinner here on Thursday, July 24, 2014. We arrived about 8:30pm and the place was packed! As we strolled up the sidewalk to try to find the entrance, there appeared to be a table of 2 enjoying a meal in the doorway. So we figured it was full and they put the last table there. Not the case! They have you enter the kitchen! How cool is that?! The aroma that hit us and the fast pace energy of the cooks in the kitchen was a great indication of what we were about to experience. The decor totally makes you feel like you are in Italy. There was the garlic tree hanging from the ceiling and the carnivale masks placed around the restaurant. There were doilys hanging from the light fixtures. There were the pictures and paintings of Rome, Venice, Florence, etc decorating the walls. There was even a beautiful oil painting hanging in the bathroom! The waiter was friendly, knowledgeable of the menu and seemed to speak French, English and Italian. The wine list was very expensive and as we are not wine connoisseurs, we chose the cheapest red wine at the bottom of the wine list. We wound up getting an entire carafe for 10€ and it was delicious! The menu is designed so that you pick your pasta and then pick your sauce. There are also chef specials, meats and seafood items to choose from. For the appetizer, we chose the carpaccio, which was very tender and served with thin slices of peccorino reggiano cheese on top. Spinkled with olive oil, capers, bitter greens and and lemon. Delicioso! For my entre, I chose the tagliatelle with arrabiata sauce. The pasta was obviously a homeade flour and egg pasta, very fresh and cooked al dente. The arrabiata sauce was a perfectly spicy tomato based sauce and the dish came sprinkled with basil over the top. My wife got the tortellini with bolognaise sauce. Also homeade and fresh, the bolognaise sauce was a tomato based sauce laced with a very flavorful Italian pork sausage and baked with mozzarella cheese, served with basil sprinkled over the top. Also molto delicioso. (Oh- you bet I tried it!) A bowl of parmigianna reggiano cheese, bread and a big bottle of water all came complimentary with the meal. This meal was so good, I just had to try a dessert, so I chose the Marquise au chocolate. This was a quarter inch thin chocolate dessert made with dark chocolate, butter, sugar, cocoa powder, eggs and cream served with a chocolate sauce over the top, whipped cream and a couple of mint leaves to garnish. OMG, it was so good. I also got a cup of Cafe. I probably would have paid 150€ for this meal and felt good about getting a great value. That's how good it was. All together, we got out there for 65€. Seriously, if you are looking for authentic Italian food, this is the place. Be sure to check out the pics i posted of the food, restaurant and kitchen.

After walking around the town for a while and comparing menus, we settled on Pizzeria La Pignatta. The inside of the restaurant is pretty charming with a ton of wood decorations on the inside. We came during prime lunch time on a day when all skiers were basically unable to hit the slopes, so the restaurant was busy and the service was incredibly slow. That being said, the food was excellent. We ordered olive oil with our bread, and were handed a bottle of olive oil that had been infused with some peppers and herbs. It was absolutely delicious. As a New Yorker - and thereby a pizza lover - I decided on a pizza that strayed from the normal tomato base. We ordered the Montagnarde, wich had cream, cheese, reblochon, ham, fresh mushrooms, and egg. I must say this was a delight. If you have the guts to put an egg in the middle of my pizza and it tastes good, you are good in my book. The pizza definitely hit the spot. No comparison to New York style pizza, but I would definitely suggest it. We also ordered the fondue served with a charcuterie board. The fondue was amazing and incredibly tasty. I was surprised by how something so simple - melted cheese - can be so delicious. The charcuterie board cost extra, but it was worth it. I always love trying out regional charcuterie. We walked back out into the blizzard with smiles on our faces.

We…read moreactually had plans to check out another restaurant - Le Pied de la Gargouille but that restaurant never opened and Meleze just happened to be next door. We were a bit cautious walking in since there were a couple of little kids running all over but I'm so glad we gave this place a shot. Restaurant is small and cozy....our server was pretty friendly and attentive even though he had a full house to take care. Folks talk about the smaller portions in Europe but I'm not sure where that is because portions were huge everywhere we went and Meleze was no exception. To start, I ordered the hot goat cheese salad (10 Euros) and my husband had the terrine w/ salad (7 Euros). Both were pretty good size portions...the goat cheese salad came with salami, prosciutto, ham, greens and cornichons. The terrine was the same except instead of goat cheese, there was a terrine...healthy sizes also...American-sized portions. ;) I was getting mighty full after the appetizer but silly us ordered entrees - Pork chop medallions of Haute-Alps cooked in ceps and bacon sauce, then toasted with cheese of mountains. Rich, creamy and decadent...loved it. My husband ordered a Tartiflette du Meleze which was maybe like a French mac n cheese, but w/ potatoes and a ton ton ton of cheese. All of the food was super delicious and was perfect for the cool night. I can enjoy fancy restaurants but my favorite spots are comfort food spots and I'm gonna call it..one of my favorite restaurants in France.
