Creamy scalloped potatoes and stewed carrots/celery.

Looking for some traditional Lyonnaise comfort food? Look no further. Lyonnaise cuisine doesn't get anymore homely or authentic than it does at Le Musée. I only had one evening to spend in Lyon and I did not want to waste my dining experience on anything that I could find in any other part of France. So, I did my research and stumbled upon Le Musée. All the pictures you see people post on Yelp are pretty much true-to-form. I ordered stewed veal, mushroom salad, and Praline tart. It was all so amazingly humble and comforting. Hit the spot. I wanted so badly to order another portion to bring back to my sister so she could try but this little hole-in-the-wall/ Mom & Pop restaurant seemed so authentic that I doubt they'd have any takeaway containers. I was a solo diner without reservations which is the only reason they were able to squeeze me in on a small little table with another solo diner. It was very much so a "Take it or leave it" offer. So, I took it. And boy, was it worth it. Definitely, make reservations. Especially, if you're a party of 2 or more. Menu items are seasonal and per availability. I will have to come back and try their bone marrow.

Fantastic bouchon! It's very casual and intimate. The proprietor comes out and takes your order after explaining the menu. He speaks limited English but is very very friendly. The lamb tongue starter (4/5) - tongue was surprisingly bland but had an interesting texture. The accompanying mustard mixture was very flavorful. Lyonnaise sausage in bread (5/5) - an elevated pigs in a blanket with side salad is a local classic well done here Pike fish with lobster sauce (4/5) - something I had to try once as it is the dish of Lyon. Very flavorful with the lobster sauce. The texture and consistency of the fish (made into a dumpling of sort or "fish soufflé") is interesting though I wouldn't necessarily get this very often Cheeks (5/5) - I think it was beef but whatever it was... It was amazing! They have very good but cheap tabke wine as well. I'd happily return here. Value and flavor was off the chart.

One of my all time favorite meals! We got the last 2 open seats at lunch (make a reservation!) and we were the only 2 Americans (good sign!) We were hosted like family and sat with us to make sure our order would be the best. I got a salad with warm mushrooms, so so good! And the fish Quenelle with lobster bisque sauce, one of the best savory meals I've ever had! My husband got the rabbit pate then the beef cheek and loved it. After a cafe they insisted we had a "on the house" grape' we left so full, and oh so happy!

Gigot (lamb shank) - delicious. Lamb here is a bit more gamey than in the US so...

The People of Lyon are FAR more friendly here than Paris! They are actually helpful when we appear (looks aren't deceiving) totally lost! We got seated (a bit tightly) close to this (slightly) older couple in the "Hole in the Wall" we chose for lunch yesterday. The seating is mostly "bench-style", but still with chairs with multiple tables placed together to maximize capacity if not entry and exit. We were literally seated dead center in the middle of the room/restaurant. When we were finished, we had to (we did Not mind) wait a bit for those around me to sufficiently clear in order to leave. Refer to to liquor below. Apparently this is a Local lunch crowd hangout. Everyone seemed to know each other...then there was us! I was (having just come from Paris, and being American - they don't seem to hate us in Lyon - Americans nor Asians) skeptical of the seating at first because I was clearly going to be blocked in tightly. BUT...this restaurant had a "daily menu" which the non-English-speaking Owner comes and explains to you. Even this system of how orders were taken had to be explained to us by our sincerely helpful and warmly friendly neighbors. They took us through the menu selections with the Owner, as it turned out, while they were having their order taken too. The food was great. The atmosphere was very neighborly. Obvious businessmen & women tightly packed in with probable retirees...and a couple of foreigners - us. At the end, the owner brought around, poured us a bit (and left it on our table) a big bottle of what turned out to be a grape-based, 47% alcohol (94 proof! Definitely not for the young!), liquor that tasted like scotch to my uneducated palate & surprised (stunned) nose. See photos. It was surprisingly smooth but Strong! Gratis in France??!! We were going to return there today, but the couple suggested another place close-by for variety. (They are friends of the Owner...hope he doesn't have this translated!), but apparently were justifiably proud of their city and wanted us to experience it. This was just one of many instances of helpful friendly people that we encountered in Lyon. Just so happens to be related to my review for Yelp. If you come to France (our first time), you owe it to yourself to include the REAL France with a casual gastronomic delight like Lyon!

Very great and authentic restaurant. They don't have any kind of menu, the cook just came to us and started to say what they were offering. As soon as he figured out that my French isn't the best, he asked me where we were from and he started to talk something in between German, French, Italian and English which was really fun to listen to. The food was great and also very fresh. If you're up to something very unusual I suggest you eat the brain of a pig, which they really serve there. It seems to be very popular among the guests going in and out at this resto. The only bummer for me was that if you go in twos or threes, you're likely to sit next to complete strangers since the tables are all next to each other. Therefore private conversations are not possible without other people listening as well. Overall it was a great experience and I'd go there anytime again.

However I knew it would not be my only bouchon dinner after trying the typical dishes of eggs in red wine sauce and fish dumplings. I had never had these food before but I know how to cook so I knew something was off. The red wine sauce was thin and watery and the fish dumplings dense and pale. It was a Monday evening so perhaps the best chef had the night off. The wine was very good and the atmosphere was perfectly lyonnaise.

The execution was on point. The dumplings totally had pike/fish flavor but so light and delicate. However the star is what lies beneath it. The lobster bisque was insanely good and brought added dimension to the dumpling. It was served with scalloped potatoes. I started with the cheese and salad. I never had cottage cheese so fresh and light. No comparison to the one you get in the market. It was whipped with herbs and olive oil with a wonderful mouth feel. The dessert was a let down. A praline tart. I should have gone with the cheese plate, but I wanted to end with something different.

This one stands out for its commitment to great service and outstanding sandwiches (tartines/toast) hot and cold. The decor here is beautiful with the stonework inside with quite a few tables as well as tables outside. Our server was outstanding, we ordered wine, cider, foie gras and egg salad tartines, and a couple of desserts. The toasts were excellent. The raspberry dessert was too mushy and the coconut dessert too dry. But we will be back for more tartines and to try their burgers.

Only one waitress spoke English, and she wasn't serving us - however she did explain about the different specials of the day. Our actual waiter was super nice and patient as we ordered and the food was amazing. We chose one tartine each (party of 3) and cut them into thirds so we could each sample everything. - Tomato burrata tartine with balsamic: very fresh, pretty much what you would expect from a tomato/mozz sandwich - The special that I ordered was pork with polenta and olives. It was amazing!!!!! - Croque Monsieur was also tasty - ham with tomato and cheese. We shared potatoes gratin and a bottle of wine. Really nice meal in a traditional Lyonnaise cafe. Cobblestone streets and adorable awnings - so picturesque!
